The comparison is a practical review method—not a Shopify-mandated test protocol—and it cannot replace functional testing.
Choose a safe theme to preview
Keep the candidate separate from the live storefront while you work. Shopify offers two useful routes:
- Local development: Run
shopify theme dev. Shopify CLI previews the local theme through a development theme and can hot reload CSS and section changes, or refresh the page when files change. Shopify describes development themes as temporary; they are deleted after seven days of inactivity. If the preview needs to remain available after you log out, push the development theme to an unpublished theme. See Shopify’s Shopify CLI theme development documentation. - Theme library: Use an unpublished theme in the store’s theme library. Shopify says merchants can add themes to test changes to a copy of a published theme, preview them, and share preview links. Only one theme can be published at a time. See Adding, previewing, and buying themes.
Do not treat a development preview as a checkout-customization preview: Shopify cautions that checkout customizations cannot be previewed in the local development preview.
Select pages and states that can reveal the change
Choose pages based on what the code touches, rather than capturing only the homepage. For example, a change to a product-card snippet may affect both collection and search results; a cart drawer change calls for a cart state. This is practical test design, not a page list prescribed by Shopify.

- Include each affected template or component context, such as home, collection, product, or cart.
- Capture meaningful interaction states where relevant: open navigation, selected product variant, expanded accordion, or cart with an item.
- Choose desktop and mobile viewport sizes if the change affects responsive layout. Keep the exact dimensions the same in the baseline and candidate.
Keep the baseline and candidate comparable
A screenshot comparison is useful only when the capture conditions are stable enough that differences are interpretable. Capture the baseline and candidate close together in time so unrelated changes to products, promotions, or other store content are less likely to appear as theme regressions.
- Record the page URL, theme being previewed, viewport dimensions, browser conditions, and interaction state.
- Capture the baseline from the existing design and the candidate from the development or unpublished theme, using the same page and state.
- Keep content and other relevant conditions consistent where possible. If a product, banner, or other content changed between captures, note it so it is not mistaken for a styling defect.
- Repeat for every selected page and viewport. Compare like with like, not a desktop baseline against a mobile candidate.
Review the screenshots for unintended changes
Place the images side by side or use a difference overlay. Inspect meaningful changes rather than assuming every changed pixel is a bug: intended design edits and dynamic content can both produce visible differences.

- Look for elements that shifted, disappeared, or appeared unexpectedly.
- Check text wrapping, spacing, typography, image crops, and alignment.
- Look for horizontal overflow, clipped content, overlapping controls, or elements pushed below the expected area.
- Check responsive behavior at each selected viewport, especially navigation, product information, and calls to action.
- For every difference, decide whether it is intended, an unrelated content change, or a defect that needs correction.
Pair visual review with code checks
Screenshot review answers whether the rendered page looks as intended. It does not establish that the theme’s Liquid or JSON is sound, and a linter does not establish that the rendered design looks right.
Run Shopify Theme Check on the candidate. Shopify describes it as a Liquid and JSON linter that can identify issues including syntax errors, missing templates, unused variables and snippets, unknown or deprecated tags, and performance issues. It can be run on demand through Shopify CLI or in CI. Shopify’s article How to test themes before submitting to the Shopify Theme Store also discusses Theme Check and Lighthouse tests using a development-store preview link.

Share and retain the reviewed candidate
When another person needs to review the change, share an unpublished theme’s preview link where appropriate. Keep the candidate unpublished until its intended visual and functional changes have been reviewed. Shopify documents preview links for unpublished themes in its theme management guidance. If the candidate is a temporary development theme, account for its seven-day inactivity lifecycle or push it to an unpublished theme when a longer-lived preview is needed.
