Call page.authenticate() with the username and password before navigating to the protected page, then capture it with page.screenshot(). The example below reads credentials from environment variables so they do not need to be written into your source code.
Take an authenticated screenshot
Install Puppeteer in your project, set the two credential variables in your environment, and run this JavaScript with Node.js:

BASIC_AUTH_USERNAMEandBASIC_AUTH_PASSWORDin the shell or secret manager that launches the script. Replace the example URL with the protected page. - Run the script from a project configured for ES modules. The screenshot is written to
screenshot.pngin the current working directory.
Puppeteer’s Page.authenticate() API accepts a credentials object with string username and password properties, or null to disable authentication. The call must precede navigation so the credentials are available for the authentication exchange. For version-specific details, check the version installed in your project; the official API documentation reviewed here identifies version 25.12.0.
Choose when the page is ready
The sample waits for networkidle2 before capture, then saves the page image with page.screenshot(). That wait condition may not match every application: pages that keep network requests open or load important content later may need a different readiness signal.

- For application-specific content, wait for a selector that indicates the relevant content has appeared before taking the screenshot.
- Use
page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' })to save an image to a file. The screenshot API can also return image data, including a base64 string orUint8Array, when you need to process or store it in code instead. - For a single component rather than the whole page, use Puppeteer’s element screenshot capability instead of capturing the page.

Authentication versus manually setting headers
For a standard HTTP authentication challenge, page.authenticate() is Puppeteer’s documented direct method. page.setExtraHTTPHeaders() is a separate API for sending additional headers with every request the page initiates. Header names are lowercased and outgoing header order is not guaranteed, according to the setExtraHTTPHeaders() API. The documentation does not establish universal behavior across every server, redirect, or authentication setup, so use the method that matches the server’s actual authentication flow rather than assuming the two approaches are interchangeable.

Performance and credential safety
Puppeteer notes that page.authenticate() enables request interception behind the scenes and that this might affect performance. The documentation provides no numeric estimate, so measure in your own workload if capture latency matters.
- Keep real credentials out of source control, screenshots, and routine logs; load them from environment variables or a secrets manager.
- Do not log the credentials object while diagnosing failures.
- Use
page.authenticate(null)when authentication should be disabled for subsequent page requests.
Troubleshooting
The page shows an authentication prompt or an access-denied response
Check that both environment variables are present and contain the credentials expected by the site. Confirm that page.authenticate() runs before page.goto(), and verify that the URL is the protected route you intend to capture.

The screenshot is blank or missing application content
Authentication and navigation completing do not guarantee that a client-rendered page has finished showing the content you need. Add a wait for a page-specific selector or readiness condition before calling page.screenshot(); a generic network-idle condition may not fit the application.
Capture is slower after adding authentication
Request interception is used behind the scenes by page.authenticate() and may affect performance. Puppeteer does not quantify the impact; compare runs in the target environment and avoid treating any slowdown as a fixed percentage.

A custom header does not behave as expected
page.setExtraHTTPHeaders() sends headers with every request initiated by the page, and the API documents lowercased names and unspecified outgoing header order. For an ordinary HTTP authentication challenge, try page.authenticate() instead; behavior for unusual server or redirect configurations is not universally specified by the documentation.
