Use await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshots/example.png' }) to save a Puppeteer screenshot. Puppeteer resolves a relative path from the Node.js process’s current working directory, so create the destination folder first or supply an absolute path.
Save a Puppeteer screenshot to a path
Install Puppeteer with npm install puppeteer, create a screenshots directory in the directory from which you will run the script, then save this as an ES module, such as screenshot.js. The example follows Puppeteer’s documented launch, navigation and awaited screenshot pattern. Puppeteer screenshot guide

Choose and verify the output path
Relative paths
A path such as screenshots/example.png is resolved against the process current working directory, not automatically against the folder containing screenshot.js. Check that directory by running pwd on macOS or Linux, or cd in Windows Command Prompt. Create the destination folder before the script runs; Puppeteer does not create missing parent directories for you. The screenshot options reference documents the relative-path behavior.

Absolute paths
Use an absolute path when the output location must not depend on the directory from which the script is launched. For example, on a Unix-like system:

Saving without a path
The path option is optional. If you omit it, Puppeteer returns screenshot data rather than writing a file. Page.screenshot() returns a Uint8Array by default; the base64 encoding overload returns a string. See the Page screenshot API reference.
Control what the screenshot captures
Full page or viewport
fullPage: true requests a capture of the whole page; the default is false, which captures the current viewport. This changes the capture area, not the output directory.

Choose image format and quality
Puppeteer infers the image type from the file extension when you provide a path. You can also set the type explicitly. Keep the extension consistent with that type so the filename does not misrepresent the file.

Capture one element
For a specific element rather than the page, wait for a selector and call the element handle’s screenshot() method:

Troubleshoot common save problems
- The script cannot find or save in the expected folder: A relative path is based on the process working directory. Run the script from the intended directory, create the target folder there, or use an absolute path.
- The screenshot call fails because a directory is missing: Create the parent directory before calling
page.screenshot(). - The page capture ends too soon or does not reflect expected content: Navigation completion is separate from choosing a save path. The example waits for
networkidle2; pages with delayed content may need an explicit wait for a relevant selector before capturing. - The output is not the format you expected: Check the filename extension and any explicit
type. JPEG quality settings do not apply to PNG. - An element screenshot fails: Check that the selector matched and that the target remains attached to the DOM when the screenshot is taken.
- No file appears: If you omitted
path, Puppeteer returned image bytes instead of writing them to disk.
