It is a fit for developer-led workflows that need browser rendering and adjustable page settings, but the available documentation does not establish how faithfully it handles every site. Test representative pages before relying on it for high-fidelity output.
What CloudConvert does for web pages
CloudConvert’s Capture Website operation accepts a website URL and an output format. It can create a PDF or capture a PNG or JPG screenshot. CloudConvert says its HTML-to-PDF service is powered by headless Chrome, so this is a browser-based capture workflow rather than a simple text-to-document conversion.
The feature is exposed through an API and job workflow. In CloudConvert’s documented PDF example, a website-capture task produces the file, then an export/url task makes it retrievable. This makes the feature most relevant when you want to integrate page capture into an application or repeatable process, rather than simply print one page from a desktop browser.
How to convert a URL to PDF with CloudConvert
- Create an API job. In CloudConvert, add a
capture-websitetask with the target URL and PDF as the output format. The operation documentation lists its input options, including engine selection, engine version, output filename, and timeout. - Export the result. Chain an
export/urltask to the capture task, as in CloudConvert’s documented example, then retrieve the generated file from the resulting export URL. - Choose how to receive completion. CloudConvert describes jobs as asynchronous by default, with webhook notifications available. Its product page also says a synchronous API is available. Select the mode that fits your application’s request lifecycle.
- Validate the PDF. Open the output and check text, images, fonts, page breaks, and any headers or footers your workflow needs. A successful job does not by itself demonstrate that a particular site rendered as intended.
CloudConvert’s Quickstart Guide covers getting started with API jobs. The capture operation documents a default task timeout of five hours; this is the maximum timeout setting described in the docs, not a prediction of how long a conversion will take.

Layout and capture controls
The HTML to PDF API page describes URL or HTML-file input, authorization headers for protected resources, waiting for a CSS selector before capture, page size, margins, zoom, and custom headers and footers. The capture operation additionally documents engine and engine-version choices, a filename, and timeout.
Headers and footers
CloudConvert documents templates for headers and footers, with placeholders for page number, total pages, date, title, and URL. These options can help make generated PDFs easier to identify or navigate in a recurring workflow.

Protected pages and dynamic content
The product page says authorization headers can be supplied when fetching protected resources. The documentation reviewed does not establish which authentication schemes work or that every page behind a login can be captured. Likewise, a selector wait can help with a page element that appears after initial loading, but it does not establish reliable handling of every dynamic page, cookie wall, infinite scroll, or complex print stylesheet.
Integrations, jobs, and retrieval
CloudConvert describes SDKs, a Job Builder, storage integrations, and chaining jobs. These are useful when capture is one stage in a larger process—for example, generating a document and then passing it to another storage or conversion step. Its broader file-conversion API covers more than 200 formats, but that broad figure is not a measure of website-capture performance.

CloudConvert says export URLs are valid for 24 hours in its Quickstart Guide. That retrieval window is distinct from the caching behavior described for signed URLs below.
Pricing: read the displayed figure in context
CloudConvert’s HTML-to-PDF page displays “Starting at $0.008 per file” in a 10,000-file conversion context and offers monthly and one-time pricing choices alongside a pricing calculator. Treat that as a volume-contextual starting figure displayed by CloudConvert, not as a quote for one PDF or a universal per-file rate. Check the current product and pricing page for the terms that apply to your expected volume.

Privacy and link handling
CloudConvert’s Signed URLs documentation says the signed URL payload is publicly visible and can be extracted from the URL. It advises against including sensitive information, such as storage credentials, in a job payload. The same documentation says a cache_key caches output files for 24 hours and can avoid repeating a job during that window. That cache detail and the 24-hour export-URL validity are separate behaviors; neither alone describes the complete privacy or file-retention policy.
Strengths and limits
Where it makes sense
- Automated capture from a website URL without requiring a user to print pages manually.
- Documented controls for page size, margins, zoom, selector waits, and headers or footers.
- Job chaining, SDKs, storage integrations, and webhook notifications for application workflows.
What the available documentation does not prove
- How consistently it renders every dynamic site, cookie wall, infinite scroll, or complex print layout.
- Whether its PDFs are better than a browser’s built-in print-to-PDF for your pages.
- That any specific protected page or authentication setup will work.
CloudConvert’s product and API pages are vendor documentation; no independent rendering comparison is established here. If fidelity matters, run your own representative URLs through CloudConvert and your browser’s print-to-PDF, then compare text completeness, page breaks, image and font rendering, headers and footers, dynamic content, setup effort, privacy controls, and cost at your expected volume.

If you need a screenshot rather than a PDF, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first: cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture, and only clean shots are billed. A one-call capture looks like this:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
