First check whether the request is synchronous: DocRaptor documents a 60-second generation limit for synchronous requests and a 600-second limit for asynchronous requests. For a document that cannot finish in the synchronous window, submit it asynchronously and track its job status. If it still fails or runs slowly, inspect its error details, external assets, JavaScript, and request concurrency; async changes the workflow and time limit, but does not by itself make rendering faster.
Work out which timeout you are seeing
Record the request mode, elapsed time, HTTP response or asynchronous status, and any error text before changing settings. DocRaptor’s API reference specifies 60 seconds for synchronous generation and 600 seconds for asynchronous generation; its limits guide describes these as one minute and ten minutes. These are DocRaptor generation limits, not a universal timeout value for the client or network connection. A caller can stop waiting before DocRaptor reaches its own limit. DocRaptor API Reference Documentation · API Limits Documentation
| Mode | Documented generation limit | What your code receives | Integration consequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Synchronous | 60 seconds | The PDF response, if generation completes within the limit | Your request waits for the document response. |
| Asynchronous | 600 seconds | A job acknowledgement with a status_id, rather than the finished PDF |
Poll the status endpoint or use a callback, then retrieve the completed document. |
The asynchronous limit is a longer processing window, not a promise that the same document will finish sooner or succeed. The specific cause of a timeout depends on the request and its returned error or job status.
Move a long-running document to asynchronous generation
Set async to true when the document cannot reliably finish within the synchronous window. The immediate response acknowledges a job; it is not the PDF. Save the returned status_id, then follow DocRaptor’s documented status and retrieval flow. Asynchronous Document Creation Documentation

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Submit the document request with
asyncset totrue. - Read and retain the returned
status_id. - Check the job status endpoint, or configure
callback_urlto receive a callback. - When the status is
completed, retrieve the generated document using the documented flow. - If the status is
failed, inspectvalidation_errorsrather than treating the longer limit as a fix for the underlying problem.
DocRaptor documents the statuses queued, working, completed, and failed. Make your client handle each status instead of assuming that an accepted asynchronous request means a PDF is ready.
Reduce work caused by assets and scripts
External stylesheets, images, fonts, and scripts have to be fetched or processed as part of the document. DocRaptor notes that documents with many external resources or scripts can take several minutes to generate, and its performance guidance recommends reducing unnecessary asset work. - 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Remove external assets that do not appear in the final PDF.
- Reduce the size of oversized images and other files.
- Where practical, inline CSS or JavaScript, or embed images as data URIs; weigh this against the size and maintainability of the HTML request.
- Disable JavaScript if the document does not need it.
- If the document remains too slow for synchronous generation after reducing avoidable work, use asynchronous generation.
Distinguish an asset-fetch wait from the overall render limit
The prince_options[http_timeout] setting controls how long DocRaptor waits for an external resource. Its documented default is 10 seconds, and the accepted range is 1–60 seconds. This is a per-resource wait setting; changing it does not increase the overall 60-second synchronous or 600-second asynchronous generation limit. DocRaptor API Reference Documentation
Raise the value only when a required external asset is slow and needs more time to arrive. Lowering it can let processing move past an unavailable resource sooner, but may cause a slow required asset to be missed. First establish that an asset fetch is the bottleneck; changing this setting will not solve a slow layout or another cause of long rendering.

Check JavaScript completion and errors
DocRaptor disables JavaScript by default. If the document needs scripts to prepare its content, enable JavaScript deliberately, check for script errors and console messages, and provide a clear completion condition for asynchronous page work. HTML to PDF JavaScript Execution Documentation
For asynchronous page scripts, DocRaptor’s docraptorJavaScriptFinished() hook should return false while work remains and true when it is finished. The API documentation says other return values are errors. Avoid a completion condition that can remain pending indefinitely. JavaScript behavior can also depend on pipeline settings, so check the settings used by the failing request.

Check concurrency if the problem appears under load
DocRaptor’s limits guide lists 30 simultaneous requests as the default and says the limit is often increased for larger customers. If timeouts cluster when several jobs start together, confirm the concurrency limit that applies to your account. Concurrency is separate from the per-document generation limits: reducing simultaneous requests may address load-related issues, but does not extend the time allowed for an individual render. If you need a website screenshot rather than a PDF generated through DocRaptor, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. For example, request a screenshot of the rendered page with one call:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
