How to Make DocRaptor Wait for JavaScript Before Rendering a PDF

Enable a DocRaptor JavaScript engine, then use docraptorJavaScriptFinished() to signal when asynchronous content is ready for PDF rendering.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enable JavaScript in the DocRaptor request, then—when your page does asynchronous or delayed work—define docraptorJavaScriptFinished() in the page. Return false while the PDF’s required content is pending and true once it is ready. A check for the actual content is usually more dependable than an arbitrary sleep.

Enable one JavaScript engine in the DocRaptor request

DocRaptor disables JavaScript by default. Turn on either its standard JavaScript engine with javascript: true or Prince’s separate engine with prince_options[javascript]: true. DocRaptor recommends its standard engine for most users; do not enable both, because that runs the code twice. See DocRaptor’s API documentation and its JavaScript documentation for the request options and engine details.

For example, the relevant settings in a JSON request are:

{
  "javascript": true
}

If your integration sends form-encoded fields rather than JSON, use the corresponding option name and value in that request format. Keep the engine choice consistent with the JavaScript features your page needs.

Tell DocRaptor when asynchronous content is ready

Enabling an engine allows JavaScript to run, but it does not necessarily tell DocRaptor when your application’s delayed work has completed. Define docraptorJavaScriptFinished() in the HTML being converted. DocRaptor calls it in the page context; return the boolean false while required output is pending, then true when that output is ready. A value other than true or false is an error.

For example, if your application inserts an element after loading a chart, use the presence of that element as the readiness signal:

<script>
docraptorJavaScriptFinished = function() {
  return document.getElementById("content-needed-in-pdf") != null;
};
</script>

Replace content-needed-in-pdf with an ID your page adds only after the PDF’s required content is available. If the condition is already true before the asynchronous work finishes, it will not serve as a useful readiness check; choose a signal that reflects completion, not merely that a placeholder or container exists. DocRaptor’s JavaScript delay guidance demonstrates this pattern with an asynchronously loaded chart element.

Prefer a content-based check to a fixed wait

A readiness condition can track the state that matters to the document. A fixed delay can be appropriate when the application has a known, bounded delay, but its duration must suit that application and its runtime conditions. DocRaptor’s example that waits ten seconds illustrates the technique; it is not a universal setting or a guarantee that every page will be ready after ten seconds.

Use a timeout only as a deliberate fallback

The documented timeout pattern uses a didWait flag and setTimeout before reporting completion. Adapt that approach only when you have a reason to rely on elapsed time. If you can observe a specific DOM change or application state that means the needed content has arrived, use that instead.

Choose the engine that fits the page

The standard engine is designed for popular JavaScript tools and libraries, including React, Adobe Typekit and Highcharts. Prince’s JavaScript engine is a separate option with PDF-oriented capabilities such as JavaScript from CSS, multi-pass rendering and access to PDF boxes. DocRaptor notes that Prince is not a web browser and can behave differently from modern browsers. The engines are not interchangeable guarantees of browser compatibility: choose based on the code and PDF-specific functions your document needs.

Diagnose content that is still missing

Check whether the readiness condition can ever become true

  • Confirm the page defines docraptorJavaScriptFinished() and that it returns only a boolean.
  • Check that the function waits on the element or state your application actually changes when asynchronous work completes.
  • If the expected content is produced by an asynchronous request, verify that the request succeeds and updates the page before the function returns true.

Account for animations and chart rendering

DocRaptor’s troubleshooting guidance notes that asynchronous requests commonly do not finish before rendering by default. For chart output, disable animations where appropriate so the PDF is not captured mid-animation. If chart-library characters render incorrectly, check that the document uses UTF-8. See DocRaptor’s troubleshooting guide.

Separate resource timeouts from JavaScript readiness

The API reference documents an HTTP resource timeout that defaults to 10 seconds and can be configured from 1 to 60 seconds. That setting controls external-resource fetching; it is distinct from the page’s docraptorJavaScriptFinished() completion signal. Increasing a resource timeout is not a substitute for defining when application-generated content is ready.

Check console behavior if generation stops

DocRaptor documents different defaults by pipeline: in Pipelines 1–6, console messages halt generation by default; in Pipelines 7 and later, they are ignored and logged by default. If console output appears related to a failed conversion, check which pipeline behavior applies to your account and address the underlying page error.

Understand request limits and longer jobs

DocRaptor documents a 60-second hard limit for synchronous requests and a 600-second limit for asynchronous requests. An asynchronous request changes how a longer-running document is created and retrieved; it does not replace the page readiness hook. Configure the completion function for the page’s actual work even when using asynchronous document generation. See DocRaptor’s asynchronous document guide and the API reference for the relevant limits and request options.

Test without exposing a live API key

DocRaptor’s tutorial shows a test-mode API request and notes that test PDFs are watermarked. Use test mode to check the output, then account for the watermark when evaluating the result. Do not put a live API key in browser-side code on a publicly accessible page: DocRaptor warns that its browser-side JavaScript library exposes the key in the page source. Use a server-side agent or an API setup restricted by referrer as appropriate. Details are in the DocRaptor tutorial.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does DocRaptor run JavaScript by default?

No. Enable either the standard engine or Prince’s JavaScript engine in the request.

Can I use a ten-second delay for every page?

No. It is an example, not a universal timing guarantee. Prefer a condition tied to the content your PDF needs.

Does an asynchronous DocRaptor request wait for JavaScript automatically?

The asynchronous request mode handles longer-running document creation and retrieval; it does not replace the page’s readiness function.
