When a Streamlabs alert will not upload, appear, animate correctly, or play sound, isolate the problem by symptom: check the asset and file limits for upload failures; verify the selected platform, event, theme, and source order for display problems; and inspect mute, mixer, and audio routing settings for silence. Save your changes and test the alert before going live.
Start with the setup and a test
Streamlabs alerts can be configured in the Streamlabs dashboard, Streamlabs Desktop, the Streamlabs plugin for OBS, or as an Alert Box browser source in OBS and other supported streaming software. The precise labels can vary by software version. In the dashboard, choose the intended platform and event, review the global styling and event-specific settings, and use Live Preview or the test function to check the result.
For each change, select the asset and settings you actually intend to use, then save before leaving that page. Streamlabs’ setup guide specifically warns users to press Save Settings in the bottom right before navigating to another left-side menu item. See Streamlabs’ alert setup guide and its quick guide.

Check the supported format and size
Streamlabs’ Common Errors in Alert Customization article, last updated June 14, 2024, lists GIF, JPEG, PNG, WebM, and MP4 for image or video assets, and MP3, Ogg, and WAV for sound. It gives a file-size range of 200 KB to 45 MB. If an upload is rejected, check both the actual file type and its size against those stated limits. These are the limits in that Streamlabs article; check the current interface if its requirements have changed. Streamlabs: Common Errors in Alert Customization.

If the gallery or upload control is missing
Try opening the dashboard in a current version of Chrome or Firefox, which Streamlabs recommends when the gallery does not display correctly. If the file is too large for direct upload, Streamlabs’ customization guidance describes using an external file URL. That only works if the address points directly to the media file and is accessible to the alert; a general sharing-page link may not work.

Confirm the event and theme
- Choose the platform and event you mean to test, and confirm that the event is enabled.
- Confirm the intended widget theme is active and the alert variation has its required settings. If the wrong variation appears or content is missing, temporarily disable variations to see whether they are the cause.
- Use Live Preview or the test control to verify the event before relying on it during a broadcast.
Streamlabs’ Alerts/Widget Troubleshooting and setup instructions cover testing and alert configuration.

Check source order and alert timing
- In the streaming software’s source list, move the Alert Box source above sources that might cover it.
- Check that both show and hide animations have a selection, and that the alert duration is long enough to see.
- Check whether alerts are paused. Also inspect moderation delay: Streamlabs says an unlimited moderation delay requires an authorized moderator to accept alerts; an unaccepted alert will not play.
Isolate custom code or rendering issues
If custom HTML or CSS is enabled and you do not maintain it, temporarily disable it to test whether it is interfering. Restore only code you intend to use. Streamlabs also suggests toggling browser hardware acceleration as a troubleshooting step and restarting the streaming software; this is a diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix. Make one change at a time and test again so you can identify what mattered.
Streamlabs alert sound not working
Check the sound asset and save state
Verify that the intended sound is selected, its volume is audible, and the change was saved. Streamlabs documents three ways to set an alert sound: use an audio URL, upload audio, or select a Sounds Library item. Test the sound in the dashboard or streaming software after changing it. See Streamlabs’ instructions for changing Alert Box sounds.

Check mute, mixer, and routing
- Check the mute control in Recent Events.
- Open Advanced Audio Settings and verify the monitoring choice and that alert audio is enabled on the track used by the stream or recording.
- In Streamlabs Desktop, inspect the Alert Box source properties for “Route Audio to OBS,” where applicable. The available option and label can differ by software version.
If the alert is audible in preview but not in the stream recording, prioritize track and routing checks rather than replacing the sound file.
Alert Box browser source is stale or plays repeatedly
Refresh the source before clearing cache
If the displayed alert is stale, refresh the browser source. If that does not help, remove and re-add the widget source. For an echo, check for extra pop-out windows and, in OBS, check “Shutdown when not active” on the browser source in every relevant scene. Streamlabs recommends recreating the source if the echo persists. Follow its alert echo troubleshooting guide.

Try account and cache steps later in the process
If basic settings and source refresh do not resolve the issue, log out of Streamlabs services and back in, or relink the connected account if the problem appears account-related. Streamlabs also recommends clearing the broadcasting software’s browser cache. Its documented browser-cache directory is for Windows; close the broadcasting application before clearing it, and do not assume that path applies to macOS. The general troubleshooting article includes these later steps: Streamlabs Alerts/Widget Troubleshooting.

After editing an image, video, sound, message template, position, font, animation, or duration, save the settings before switching to another menu. Then run a test in the same platform and event context that will use the alert. If the saved result still differs from the preview, check that you edited the active theme and variation, and that your streaming software is displaying the intended Alert Box source rather than an older or duplicate source.
