Best Linux Streaming Software: OBS Setup and Alternatives

OBS Studio is free, open source, and the clearest Linux choice for live streaming. Learn how to install it, check compatibility, prepare a scene, and assess alternatives.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OBS Studio is the best-supported starting point for live streaming on Linux. It is free, open source, and designed for recording and live broadcasts, with scenes that can combine sources such as a screen, game, webcam, images, text, and browser windows. A webcam is optional: you can stream a screen or game without one.

Why OBS Studio is the strongest Linux choice

OBS combines live-streaming and recording tools with flexible scene and audio controls. That makes it a practical fit whether you need a simple screen capture or a broadcast assembled from multiple sources. The OBS Project describes the software as free and open source and provides Linux installation guidance: OBS Studio.

OBS lists Linux support, but your experience depends on your distribution, graphics support, encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee that a particular computer can stream smoothly.

Check Linux compatibility before installing

  • Graphics: OBS lists a GPU compatible with OpenGL 3.3 as a Linux/Unix requirement.
  • Display system: OBS lists support for the X window system or Wayland.
  • Workload: CPU and overall performance needs vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and complexity of your scenes.

Consult the current OBS Linux installation guidance and system requirements before choosing a package or planning a demanding broadcast. Software releases and installation directions can change; check the official pages for current information.

Install OBS Studio on Linux

For Ubuntu

  1. Open the OBS Project’s Linux installation page and follow its Ubuntu instructions for the OBS PPA.
  2. Install OBS using the commands and package steps shown on that official page. Check the page for current commands rather than relying on an older copied command.
  3. Launch OBS and use the Auto-Configuration Wizard to estimate settings for your computer and intended broadcast.

For other distributions

  1. Use the OBS Project’s Linux installation page to find its recommended Flathub route for non-Ubuntu distributions.
  2. Follow your distribution’s Flatpak setup instructions if Flatpak is not already available.
  3. Install OBS from Flathub, then open it and run the Auto-Configuration Wizard.

The OBS wiki identifies Flatpak and Ubuntu as supported Linux builds; packages provided by other distributions are community-provided. If you choose a distribution package, check that distribution’s own documentation for installation and maintenance details: OBS supported builds and install instructions.

Set up a scene and test the full broadcast

OBS scenes are arrangements of sources. Create the scene you intend to use before broadcasting, then check each visual and audio element in the preview and mixer.

Logitech Creators Blue Yeti USB Microphone for PC, Mac, Gaming, Recording, Streaming, Podcasting, Studio and Computer Condenser Mic with Blue VO!CE effects, 4 Pickup Patterns, Plug and Play - Blackout
  • Custom three-capsule array: This professional USB mic produces clear, powerful, broadcast-quality sound for YouTube videos, Twitch game streaming, podcasting, Zoom meetings, music recording and more
  • Blue VO!CE software: Elevate your streamings and recordings with clear broadcast vocal sound and entertain your audience with enhanced effects, advanced modulation and HD audio samples
  • Four pickup patterns: Flexible cardioid, omni, bidirectional, and stereo pickup patterns allow you to record in ways that would normally require multiple mics, for vocals, instruments and podcasts
  • Onboard audio controls: Headphone volume, pattern selection, instant mute, and mic gain put you in charge of every level of the audio recording and streaming process
  • Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring
  1. Add the sources you need. Depending on your broadcast, that could mean a display, game, window, webcam, capture card, image, text, or browser window. Add a webcam only if the broadcast needs a camera view.
  2. Arrange the scene. Confirm that the important content is visible, overlays are placed correctly, and no source obscures something viewers need to see.
  3. Check audio per source. Speak or play the audio you intend to use and watch the OBS audio mixer. OBS includes per-source audio filters; choose and adjust them only as needed for your audio chain.
  4. Run a local recording or private test before going live. Verify the picture, sound, scene changes, and overall performance using the same sources and workload you plan to broadcast. A basic system requirement is not a guarantee of adequate performance under your particular load.

For performance estimates, use the Auto-Configuration Wizard and adjust the workload if the computer struggles: reduce scene complexity or choose less demanding resolution and frame-rate settings. The available evidence does not establish one bitrate, encoder, or resolution as right for every Linux machine and streaming destination, so use the destination’s current guidance alongside your own test.

Linux alternatives: what the evidence supports

Software Linux availability established Best fit Important limit
OBS Studio Yes. The OBS Project documents Flatpak and Ubuntu routes; it describes other distribution packages as community-provided. Live streaming and recording with configurable scenes and sources. Performance depends on the computer and broadcast workload.
Streamlabs Desktop The surfaced official quick-start guide lists Windows 11 and macOS 12 or later, not Linux. Not established here as a native Linux streaming option. This does not establish that every workaround or compatibility layer is impossible. See the Streamlabs Desktop quick-start guide.
Kdenlive Yes. Its official download page offers Linux AppImage and Flatpak downloads. Video editing and post-production. The download page does not establish Kdenlive as a live-streaming application. See Kdenlive downloads.

Among these options, OBS is the only one established here as both Linux-capable and intended for live streaming. Kdenlive is a relevant Linux video tool, but it serves a different role; Streamlabs Desktop’s cited guide does not list Linux as a supported operating system. A broader, verified roster of actively maintained native Linux alternatives is not established by these product sources, so it would be misleading to present a longer ranked list.

Optional camera hardware

If your broadcast needs a camera view, OBS supports webcams as inputs, so a USB webcam for streaming is a reasonable accessory to consider. It is not required for screen or game streaming. Check the specific device’s Linux support and your connection requirements before buying; no particular webcam model or universal compatibility claim is established here.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded video rather than broadcast a live camera or interactive OBS scene, StreamNeo is a different approach: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It is YouTube-only and does not stream a camera feed.
