What’s actually slowing this PC down?

No. You can go live on YouTube without separate streaming software if you use a webcam, a supported mobile device, or a compatible console. An encoder app or hardware becomes useful when you want to stream a computer screen or gameplay, connect external equipment, or build a more involved production.
Choose a YouTube Live route that fits what you want to show
YouTube Help describes four ways to stream: mobile, webcam, encoder, or console. The right choice depends on your video source and how much production control you need—not on a requirement to install an encoder for every broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming overview.
Webcam: a straightforward computer broadcast
Use YouTube’s webcam route when you want to speak to viewers from a computer with a webcam and do not need a complex setup. A webcam is needed for this route, but a new or expensive camera is not a general requirement for YouTube Live. Check YouTube’s webcam streaming instructions.
Mobile: stream from a phone or tablet
Mobile is suited to a quick update, vlog, or event where filming from your device makes sense. It has additional account and device eligibility requirements, so confirm those before planning a first mobile broadcast.

Encoder software or hardware: screen capture and production control
An encoder is the right route for computer screen sharing, gameplay capture, external audio or video devices, multiple cameras, or other advanced production needs. YouTube supports both encoder apps and standalone encoder hardware. The encoder receives the stream URL and key configured for your broadcast in YouTube Studio.
Console: broadcast directly from a compatible system
Modern PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo consoles can stream directly. Follow the instructions from your console maker; a separate computer encoder is not inherently required for this route.

Do you need OBS specifically?
No. OBS is one possible encoder, not a prerequisite for YouTube Live. If you are using a webcam, mobile device, or console route, you can use that route’s built-in YouTube workflow instead. If you need an encoder for gameplay, screen capture, or external equipment, choose software or hardware that fits your production; YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains how the connection works. YouTube’s verified-encoder listings include third-party products and note that those products are not made by YouTube.
Check eligibility before scheduling your first stream
YouTube’s general live-streaming requirements include a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days, and a minimum age of 16. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Mobile streaming has extra conditions: at least 50 subscribers, live streaming enabled, a supported device, channel verification, and no restrictions in the previous 90 days. Requirements can change, so check YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance and mobile eligibility details for your account and device.

Set up an encoder stream in YouTube Studio
Use this workflow when your chosen production requires encoder software or hardware. YouTube’s labels and scheduling flow can change, so follow the current prompts in Live Control Room.
- Create the stream: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Configure the event and audience access settings there.
- Connect the encoder: Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event into the matching fields in your encoder. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Prepare and test: Set up your screen, cameras, audio sources, and encoder output. YouTube advises testing the setup ahead of time and checking audio and video quality.
- Start sending the feed: Start streaming from the encoder, then check the incoming preview and status in Live Control Room.
- Go live when ready: Confirm the event is accessible to the intended viewers and follow the scheduled-stream workflow to start the public broadcast.
Plan for network capacity and production reliability
Your internet connection needs enough upload capacity for the encoder’s selected stream configuration, with headroom for normal network variation and any backup stream. YouTube recommends a reliable connection; there is no single upload-speed figure that guarantees a good result for every resolution, bitrate, or connection. Measure your own upload connection and test the actual configuration before relying on it for an event. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

- 【1080P HD High Quality】Capture resolution up to 1080p for video source and it is ideal for all HDMI devices such as PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U, DVDs, DSLR, Camera, Security Camera and set top box. Note: Video input supports 4K30/60Hz and 1080p120/144Hz. Does not support 4K120Hz/144Hz. Output supports up to 2K30Hz.
- 【Plug and Play】No driver or external power supply required, true PnP. Once plugged in, the device is identified automatically as a webcam. Detect input and adjust output automatically. Won't occupy CPU, optional audio capture. No freeze with correct setting.
- 【Compatible with Multiple Systems】suitable for Windows and Mac OS. High speed USB 3.0 technology and superior low latency technology makes it easier for you to transmit live streaming to Twitch, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, OBS, Potplayer and VLC.
- 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
For equipment, start with what your route requires. A computer webcam is needed for webcam streaming. An external microphone can improve or suit a particular encoder setup, but it is optional; YouTube lists microphones among common external equipment rather than requiring one for every creator. A phone or console streamer does not need to buy a webcam just to go live.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand content and access risks before going live
Choose content you have the rights to stream and review YouTube’s copyright policies before broadcasting music, video, or other material made by someone else. Set the event’s visibility and access deliberately, then verify that the intended viewers can open it before the event. A technically successful encoder connection does not itself establish that you have the rights to the content or that the stream is available to the right audience.

When a cloud looping service is a different kind of option
If your aim is not a camera-led broadcast but keeping uploaded videos playing continuously on a YouTube channel, that is a different workflow from choosing a live camera or encoder route. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It is not a camera broadcast tool, and it streams to YouTube only.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, nothing has to stay running at home. Each slot streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. To try it, start a StreamNeo free day.
