How to Upload Cypress Screenshots to GitHub Actions Artifacts

Use GitHub Actions’ upload-artifact after Cypress to store failure screenshots, handle empty folders, set retention, and troubleshoot missing files.

Run Cypress, then upload its default failure-screenshot folder, cypress/screenshots, with GitHub’s actions/upload-artifact action. Add the upload step after the Cypress run; use if-no-files-found: ignore so a successful run with no screenshots does not produce a warning.

Upload Cypress screenshots in a GitHub Actions workflow

This workflow uses Cypress’s GitHub Action and uploads screenshots when files exist. The Cypress action documentation demonstrates this artifact pattern: Cypress GitHub Action documentation.

steps:
  - name: Cypress run
    uses: cypress-io/github-action@v7

  - name: Upload Cypress screenshots
    uses: actions/upload-artifact@v7
    with:
      name: cypress-screenshots
      path: cypress/screenshots
      if-no-files-found: ignore

Place the upload step after the Cypress step. By default, Cypress captures screenshots when tests fail during cypress run, so a passing run may leave no screenshots to upload. The ignore setting makes that expected empty-folder case quiet. GitHub’s upload action also supports warn and error; its default is warn. See the upload-artifact documentation for its inputs and current compatibility guidance.

Choose whether to upload on every run or only after failure

Upload whenever screenshots exist

The example above attempts the upload after every Cypress run and ignores a missing screenshot folder. This keeps the workflow simple and makes screenshots available whenever Cypress produced them.

Run the upload step only after a failure

To restrict the upload step to failed jobs, add if: failure():

  - name: Upload Cypress screenshots
    if: failure()
    uses: actions/upload-artifact@v7
    with:
      name: cypress-screenshots
      path: cypress/screenshots
      if-no-files-found: ignore

Use this as a step after the Cypress run in the same job. GitHub Actions normally skips later steps after a failure unless their conditions allow them to run; if: failure() is the condition for a step intended to run when an earlier step has failed. For workflows with additional conditions or job-level settings, check that the upload step is still eligible to run after the Cypress failure.

Make the artifact path match Cypress configuration

Cypress writes screenshots to cypress/screenshots by default. If the project sets screenshotsFolder to another location, change the artifact action’s path to that configured directory. Cypress’s configuration reference documents screenshotsFolder and the default screenshotOnRunFailure: true for cypress run: Cypress configuration reference.

Failure screenshots are captured by default during cypress run. If the project sets screenshotOnRunFailure: false, Cypress will not create those automatic failure captures. Cypress also clears the contents of its screenshots folder before a run by default. Set trashAssetsBeforeRuns: false only if preserving existing contents is intentional; otherwise, old files are not a substitute for screenshots from the current run. See Cypress screenshots and videos.

Set artifact retention and know its limits

Use retention-days to request how long the uploaded artifact is retained. GitHub documents a default retention period of 90 days for artifacts and logs, but repository, organization, or enterprise policy may change the effective period. GitHub’s current documentation describes configurable limits of 1–90 days for public repositories and 1–400 days for private repositories, subject to higher-level policy. Confirm the effective setting before relying on a particular expiry date: GitHub artifact retention documentation.

  - name: Upload Cypress screenshots
    uses: actions/upload-artifact@v7
    with:
      name: cypress-screenshots
      path: cypress/screenshots
      if-no-files-found: ignore
      retention-days: 14

Here, 14 is an example requested lifetime, not a guarantee that every repository will retain the artifact for exactly that period. Repository and organization settings can impose different limits. Deleting a workflow run also deletes its associated artifacts, according to GitHub’s artifact deletion documentation.

Upload Cypress videos separately if you use them

Cypress video recording is disabled by default. If you have enabled recording and want to keep videos, upload them as a separate artifact with their own name and path. The Cypress GitHub Action documentation demonstrates a separate cypress-videos artifact; confirm the video output path for your configuration before adding it.

Troubleshoot missing or unavailable screenshots

  • No artifact appears after a failed test: Check that the upload step follows Cypress and that its condition allows it to run after failure. Verify the workflow’s path against the configured screenshotsFolder.
  • The folder exists but contains no failure screenshots: Confirm the job runs cypress run and that screenshotOnRunFailure has not been set to false. A passing run normally has no failure screenshots.
  • Files from before the current run are gone: Cypress clears the screenshots folder before a run by default. Set trashAssetsBeforeRuns: false if retaining existing files is an intentional requirement.
  • The upload step warns about no files: Add if-no-files-found: ignore if an empty folder is expected on successful runs. Choose warn or error instead when that absence should be visible or fail the workflow.
  • The artifact is no longer available: Check artifact retention settings and whether the workflow run was deleted; deleting the run deletes its artifacts.
  • The action version is unsupported on GitHub Enterprise Server: GitHub’s current upload-artifact documentation says v4 and later are not currently supported on GHES and names compatible v3.2.2 variants. Consult that documentation for the version guidance that applies to your GHES environment before choosing an action version.
