“Encoder disconnected” is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Check the error and timestamp in YouTube Live Control Room, then compare them with your encoder logs. Verify the stream URL and RTMPS settings before changing firewall rules; next check the VPS, network path, and media settings. The exact YouTube message helps narrow down which part of the path failed.
1. Record the error before restarting
Before restarting the encoder or VPS, preserve the evidence that can distinguish an ingestion problem from a network interruption.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, note the exact stream-health error and its timestamp. YouTube displays errors beside the health indicator and timestamps them.
- Check whether the preview received any data and, if so, when it stopped.
- Compare YouTube’s timestamp with the encoder log’s disconnect time. Note whether the encoder process is still running.
- Record the encoder and operating-system versions. Keep the stream key private; redact it from screenshots, logs, and support requests.
YouTube classifies some errors as critical, which can prevent an event from starting or cause viewer problems, and others as moderate, which may reduce quality. Use the displayed error rather than guessing what “disconnected” means. The available evidence cannot identify the cause on a particular VPS without its logs and configuration.
2. Verify the YouTube destination and RTMPS settings
Check the destination before editing firewall rules. A stale URL, incorrect port, or encoder that cannot use RTMPS can prevent a connection even when the VPS itself is reachable.

- Open YouTube Live Control Room and copy the current stream URL and stream key into the encoder. Avoid relying on an old saved URL.
- Confirm that the URL uses
rtmpsand that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted extension to RTMP. - If the encoder reports an SSL error, check both the RTMPS protocol and server address. If the URL appears correct but the SSL error persists, YouTube recommends trying port
443in the URL or the encoder’s port setting. - If the encoder reports a connection timeout, recheck the URL and confirm RTMPS support in the encoder.
- Save the configuration and reconnect. Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether the error changes.
Treat the stream key as a credential: enter it only in the encoder’s stream-key field and do not share it. YouTube’s encoder setup uses both the stream URL and stream key.
3. Check the Contabo VPS and the route to YouTube
Confirm the VPS is available
- Check the VPS running status in the Contabo Customer Panel and check Contabo’s status page for a provider incident.
- If ordinary access to the VPS fails, try VNC access. Contabo says that when VNC works but other connection methods do not, firewall configuration, incorrect ports, or network misconfiguration are possible causes.
- If possible, compare access from another device or network. This can help establish whether the problem is limited to your usual access path.
Check the right firewall in the right direction
The encoder on the VPS sends traffic outward to YouTube. Inspect the VPS operating-system firewall’s outbound policy and confirm that the destination connection selected in the encoder is allowed.

Contabo’s network firewall and the operating-system firewall are separate controls. When assigned, Contabo’s network-level firewall blocks inbound traffic by default but does not restrict outbound traffic; an operating-system firewall can control inbound and outbound traffic. Therefore, opening inbound RTMP port 1935 is not, by itself, a fix for an encoder making an outbound connection. Confirm the actual protocol and destination port in the YouTube and encoder settings before changing rules.
Measure before blaming bandwidth
Contabo’s published VPS/VDS port-speed range is 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps. That range does not establish the sustained throughput of an individual VPS or the quality of its route to YouTube. If the VPS is online and the destination is correct but the stream still drops, collect measured egress performance, packet loss, and connection timing before attributing the failure to provider capacity.

4. Match the encoder’s media settings to YouTube’s guidance
Once the connection path is reachable, check the video and audio format, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval. YouTube’s guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds.

YouTube’s bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use the recommendation for the actual output profile rather than copying a value for a different resolution or frame rate. Test before the event with similar audio and motion, and monitor stream health while live.

5. Troubleshoot by symptom

| SSL error | Verify that the URL uses RTMPS and the correct server address. If those are correct and the error remains, try port 443 in the URL or encoder port setting. |
| Connection timeout | Verify the current YouTube URL and confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS. |
| “Incorrect stream format” | Use the exact YouTube error as a guide. For this error, YouTube says the configuration is not using H.264 video and AAC audio; also check for incorrect video settings. |
| VPS access fails, but VNC works | Check firewall configuration, port settings, and network configuration. Confirm whether the VPS’s ordinary access method is using the expected port. |

6. Escalate with useful evidence
If the checks do not isolate the fault, send the relevant evidence to the party best placed to investigate it.
- For Contabo: include VPS status and provider-incident checks, VNC/access results, relevant network measurements, and the times the stream dropped. Ask for provider-side investigation when those checks point to VPS or network availability.
- For the encoder vendor: include encoder and operating-system versions, the redacted destination protocol and port, the encoder logs around the disconnect, and the exact YouTube error and timestamp. Ask about RTMPS support or encoder-specific settings if those point to the software.
- For either: redact the stream key and any other credentials. Include relevant firewall rules without exposing secrets.
