To stop your microphone from sending low-level sound during pauses in XSplit Broadcaster, enable Noise Gate and tune its threshold against the live VU meter. XSplit calls this feature Noise Gate—not silence detection. It blocks audio below the threshold you set and passes audio above it.
Set up Noise Gate in XSplit Broadcaster

Choose the microphone you want to control. Open Tools > Settings > Audio and check the selected capture device. See XSplit’s Audio settings guide.

Open Tools > Audio Effects. You can also open Audio Effects from the gear icon beside the microphone dropdown in Audio settings. XSplit documents both routes in its Audio Mixer and Effects guide.

Enable Noise Gate. Speak at your usual level, pause, and adjust the threshold while watching the VU meter. Set it so quiet background signal falls below the threshold but ordinary speech remains above it. XSplit does not publish a universal recommended threshold, so there is no single number that fits every microphone, room, or speaking distance.

Open Tools > Audio Mixer to monitor the microphone separately and check its level. XSplit advises keeping levels below the red range to avoid clipping or crackling.

Test several normal phrases and pauses in your actual setup. If the gate cuts off speech, lower the threshold. If quiet background sound still passes, raise it gradually and test again.

Choose the right audio control

Noise Suppression is not another name for Noise Gate: one automatically treats noise, while the other opens and blocks audio according to a threshold. Push to Talk is a separate, hotkey-controlled mute option.
Troubleshoot common problems
The gate cuts off quiet words
The threshold may be set too high for your voice level. Lower it, then test speech at your normal distance and volume. A setting that passes loud speech can still block quieter words.

Background sound still comes through
Raise the threshold carefully and retest speech after each adjustment. The goal is to put unwanted low-level sound below the threshold without putting your voice there too.
The microphone is not responding to the effect
Return to Tools > Settings > Audio and confirm that the intended microphone is selected. Then check its activity in Tools > Audio Mixer and verify that Noise Gate is enabled for the microphone’s audio effects.

The audio crackles or clips
Check the microphone level in the Audio Mixer and keep it below the red range, as XSplit recommends. Noise Gate threshold adjustment does not correct a microphone level that is already clipping.

XSplit’s May 2026 release notes identify Broadcaster 4.6.2605.2109 and note that Presentation Sources mode became the default Audio Mode setting; they do not say Noise Gate changed. See XSplit Broadcaster 4.6 release notes.
