If you want to replace Argos CI with an open-source workflow, start with Playwright Test’s screenshot assertions if your browser tests already use Playwright. Choose BackstopJS for a dedicated scenario runner with a visual review report, while weighing its repository’s notice that it needs a new maintainer or owner. Choose reg-suit if screenshot capture is already solved and you need a separate comparison, reporting, storage, and notification layer.
For a different kind of alternative, ScreenshotNeo can capture screenshots through an API, but it is not an open-source visual-diff or baseline-review system. It may suit teams that need dependable screenshot capture as one part of a workflow, rather than a replacement for Argos’s visual comparison and review role.
How to choose an Argos CI alternative
Visual regression testing is a pipeline, not just a screenshot. Before choosing a replacement, decide which parts you want the tool to handle and which your team is prepared to own.
- Capture: Does the tool open pages and make screenshots, or do you provide images from another test setup?
- Framework fit: Does it fit your existing Playwright, Puppeteer, Storybook, or other workflow? The official documentation available for this comparison is strongest for Playwright, BackstopJS, and reg-suit.
- Baselines: Will expected images live in version control, be approved through a separate process, or be stored outside the repository?
- Review: Do you need a visual report and approval workflow, or can your team build and maintain those pieces?
- Rendering consistency: Can CI reproduce the browser and operating-system environment used to create the baselines?
- Ownership and operations: Who will maintain the runner, storage, integrations, and review process?
The options below are not interchangeable: some combine capture and comparison, while others handle only part of the pipeline.

Open-source alternatives
1. ScreenshotNeo: screenshot capture by API, not a visual-diff replacement
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It is worth considering when you need to produce screenshots programmatically, but it does not replace a visual regression tool’s baseline comparison and review workflow. You would still need to compare captures with baselines and decide how changes are reviewed.
Its API accepts one GET request with a URL and returns an image or PDF. The product’s stated differentiator is that it attempts to accept consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; individual steps can be turned off. It also reports page verdict and billing status in response headers. ScreenshotNeo says bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed.
For an open-source testing stack, treat it as a capture component rather than the test framework or diff engine. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
2. Playwright Test screenshot assertions
If your project already uses Playwright Test, its built-in screenshot assertions are the most direct starting point. An assertion such as await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() creates a reference image on an initial run and compares later screenshots against it. The official guide also describes updating snapshots with the snapshot-update flag and recommends committing and reviewing screenshot files. Playwright supports snapshots of text and arbitrary binary data as well as screenshots. See the Playwright visual comparisons guide.

- Comes with secure packaging
- It can be a gift option
This is a good fit when you want visual assertions alongside existing browser tests and are comfortable managing image baselines in version control. The trade-off is that your team owns baseline review and must keep rendering conditions stable.
Playwright warns that output can vary with the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. It recommends running tests in the same environment that generated the baselines. If local and CI screenshots disagree, check environment parity before treating the change as a product regression.
3. BackstopJS
BackstopJS is a dedicated, scenario-driven screenshot testing runner. Its documented workflow lets a team define URLs, screen sizes, selectors, and interactions, compare test screenshots with references, inspect differences in an in-browser report, and approve expected updates. Its repository lists Docker rendering, CI and source-control integration, and Playwright or Puppeteer interaction scripts.
Rank #3
It may fit a team that wants a purpose-built runner and visual approval report rather than adding assertions to an existing Playwright Test suite. The project repository currently says it needs a new maintainer or owner. That is the project’s own notice; it does not by itself establish release frequency or support quality. Investigate the notice and decide whether your team can maintain the workflow before depending on it for a critical process.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems4. reg-suit
reg-suit is a command-line image comparison and publishing layer. Your workflow supplies the screenshots; reg-suit compares them and produces an HTML difference report. Its plugin system can publish snapshots to external storage such as Amazon S3 or Google Cloud Storage, generate snapshot keys, and send notifications such as GitHub or GitLab updates.
Choose it when screenshot capture already works and you want to assemble comparison, storage, reporting, and notification steps modularly. Unlike an all-in-one capture-and-review service, this approach means your team selects and operates the capture layer, storage, and relevant plugins.

Hosted visual-testing services
Percy, Chromatic, and Applitools are hosted visual testing services mentioned in Argos’s comparison. That is a vendor-authored comparison, useful for understanding the category but not independent product testing. Before choosing a hosted service, verify its current framework support, capture and review workflow, service terms, data handling, access controls, and prices directly with the vendor. Those details are not established here.
Hosted services may appeal if your priority is a managed review experience rather than owning every part of the pipeline. Compare the specific workflow you need against the self-managed options above; no single choice is best for every team.

Keep the baseline environment reproducible
Use the same browser and operating-system environment for baseline creation and CI comparisons wherever possible. Pin or otherwise control browser and runner versions, and avoid comparing images produced under materially different rendering conditions. When a diff appears unexpectedly, first check whether the execution environment changed.

Assign ownership for approvals and storage
Decide who reviews image changes and how approved baselines are updated. With Playwright, screenshot files are part of the repository workflow; with reg-suit, you also need to decide where snapshots are published and which plugins handle notifications. BackstopJS includes a visual report and approval step, but its maintainer notice should be part of your adoption decision.
Diagnose mismatches by pipeline layer
- Screenshot differs locally from CI: compare operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, and headless mode; rendering conditions can change output.
- No screenshot reaches the comparison step: check whether your capture framework actually produced the expected image files. This matters especially with reg-suit, which consumes images rather than capturing pages itself.
- Differences are difficult to review: confirm that the chosen workflow includes a report and approval process, or budget time to build and maintain one.
- Snapshot updates create unexpected churn: update references only after reviewing the visual change and confirming the generation environment is the intended one.

Replace the example target URL with the page you want to capture and supply your API key. The API documentation describes available parameters. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots.
