How Visual AI Can Reduce UI Test Maintenance

Visual AI can flag screenshot differences and suggest replacements for broken locators, but it cannot decide whether a change is correct or replace behavior tests.

Visual AI can reduce some UI test maintenance by detecting changes between screenshots and helping recover broken element locators. It does not decide whether a visual difference is a bug, repair outdated business expectations, or eliminate review. Use it to narrow the work testers must investigate—not to remove human judgment or behavioral tests.

What visual AI does in UI testing

Two related approaches are often grouped under visual AI, but they address different maintenance problems:

  • Visual regression testing captures a screen and compares it with an approved reference image, commonly called a baseline, reference, or golden image. A mismatch flags a change to investigate; it does not prove that the change is defective.
  • AI-assisted locator healing helps when a test’s original selector no longer identifies an element. Depending on the workflow, it can use page structure, accessibility data, screenshots, and other context to suggest a replacement locator.

Visual testing looks at rendered appearance; locator healing helps tests find elements after interface changes. Neither establishes that an application’s underlying behavior is correct.

Where maintenance effort can fall

Finding presentation changes

Comparing a new rendering with an approved baseline can reveal differences in colors, spacing, element size, fonts, and layout across screens or UI states. A screenshot check can cover several visual attributes at once, including differences that may appear only at a particular screen size. The reviewer still has to determine whether the cause is a product change, a defect, or a change in the rendering environment.

Investigating broken locators

When a locator fails, a healing workflow may draw on more evidence than the failed selector alone. Katalon documents a process that tries existing locator recovery and can then use an LLM alongside page source, accessibility-tree data, full-page screenshots, and element screenshots to identify a target and suggest a replacement. Its Self-healing Insights view lets a tester inspect and approve or discard the suggestion. Katalon’s self-healing documentation describes this as a reviewable recovery workflow, not a reason to accept every proposed locator automatically.

Handling baseline changes

Visual checkpoint systems can surface mismatches, missing checkpoints, and newly observed checkpoints for resolution. Android’s guidance explains that the appropriate response to a screenshot difference may be either fixing code or approving the new screenshot as the replacement reference. Android Developers’ screenshot-testing guide puts the distinction plainly: “Screenshot tests have a different workflow than regular tests because a failed test doesn’t always mean that there is an error.”

  • The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.

What visual AI cannot safely maintain for you

  • Changed business logic: A locator can be healed while the behavior the test expects is no longer appropriate. Update the test’s intent and assertions when requirements change.
  • Functional defects: A visually similar screen can still behave incorrectly. Keep assertions for user flows, data, and application logic.
  • Every visual difference: A changed screenshot may reflect an approved redesign, a real regression, or differences in browser, device, fonts, or rendering conditions. Review before changing the baseline.
  • Every failed test: A proposed locator can point to the wrong element. Rerun the test logic and confirm that the replacement represents the intended target.

Keysight’s 2026 overview similarly frames self-healing as useful for interface modifications such as layout, DOM, redesign, or styling changes—not changed business logic or functional bugs. It recommends validating a proposed heal by rerunning the test logic and keeping an audit trail. This is vendor guidance about the product category, rather than independent comparative evidence. Read Keysight’s overview.

What the evidence says about maintenance

There is no directly comparable independent statistic establishing how much maintenance current visual AI products save. Avoid treating a claimed percentage as a general result unless it is tied to a specific product, test suite, period, and measurement method.

Studies show different failure modes

A 2019 assessment of one hybrid mobile application found that 20% of layout-based test methods and 30% of visual test methods required modification at least once. In that application, visual tests were more exposed to graphic and widget-arrangement changes; layout-based tests were more exposed to text changes and widget substitutions. Those figures describe one application, not a universal comparison or the effect of modern AI-assisted healing. The 2019 study is useful for understanding that methods can fail differently, not for predicting maintenance rates in another project.

An extended industrial case study of visual GUI testing, published in 2020, reported that 59.1% and 47.8% of test cases failed in the next version for the two tools it studied. That result shows visual GUI tests can still need maintenance; it is not a current, general estimate for AI-assisted tools. The case study should be read in its specific tool and study context.

Maintenance depends on more than the tool

A 2016 industrial study involving Siemens and Saab identified 13 factors affecting maintenance, including tester experience and test-case complexity. It also reported that frequent maintenance was less costly than infrequent, large-scale maintenance. The paper cites verification and validation work as accounting for 20 to 50 percent of total software development costs in practice; that is background from prior literature, not a measurement of visual AI savings. Alégroth, Feldt, and Kolström’s 2016 paper provides context for why test design and maintenance cadence matter alongside automation.

How to introduce visual AI without trading maintenance for risk

  1. Choose a stable, meaningful checkpoint. Capture a screen after the application reaches the intended state. Keep viewport, browser, device scale, fonts, and other relevant rendering conditions consistent so environmental noise is not mistaken for a UI change.
  2. Approve a baseline deliberately. Treat the initial reference as a reviewed expectation, not merely the first image the test happened to produce. Record which screen and state it represents.
  3. Separate visual and behavioral assertions. Use image comparison for appearance and ordinary test assertions for actions, navigation, values, and business outcomes. A matching screenshot cannot prove a flow works.
  4. Review diffs before updating references. Investigate whether a mismatch is a defect, intended design change, or capture-environment difference. Replace a baseline only after confirming the new appearance is expected.
  5. Review healed locators as code changes. Check that a suggested selector identifies the intended element, then rerun the test’s original behavior assertions. Keep the failure and repair trace where the tool supports it.
  6. Track maintenance by cause. Record whether failures came from presentation changes, DOM or locator changes, test expectation changes, or unstable capture conditions. This helps determine whether visual checks, locator strategies, or test design need adjustment.

Question Why it matters
What does it observe? Rendered pixels, DOM or accessibility structure, and business behavior expose different kinds of change; decide which signal answers the test’s question.
Which changes cause failures? Compare the tool’s resilience to the layout, styling, text, widget, and structural changes your application commonly undergoes.
How much review is needed? False positives and ambiguous diffs consume time. Check whether reviewers can see what changed and whether a repair is explainable.
Can you audit repairs? Look for a review and approval path, reruns of the original test logic, and a record of failed and healed selectors or accepted baselines.
What environments are covered? Verify support for the browsers, devices, screen sizes, and rendering conditions your users and test suite require.
What does it cost to operate? Include execution, review, baseline updates, and the time needed to diagnose failures—not only the license or service price.

For documented examples, Katalon’s visual testing documentation describes baseline collections and comparison of later execution checkpoints, with mismatches, missing checkpoints, and new checkpoints presented for resolution. Applitools describes Visual AI testing integrations. These descriptions explain product approaches; they do not establish a universal maintenance advantage or a comparable savings figure.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need screenshots as inputs to a visual review or test workflow, ScreenshotNeo can return a website screenshot or PDF from one GET request. It is a capture API and MCP server, not a replacement for your visual test assertions, approved baselines, or review of AI-suggested repairs. Its clean-shot options accept cookie or consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of a page:
