Ultrafast Cross-Browser Testing: How It Works

Parallel cross-browser testing speeds a suite by distributing independent tests across browser projects or remote environments. Applitools Ultrafast is a specific captured-DOM visual-rendering workflow, not a universal grid method.

Ultrafast cross-browser testing reduces elapsed test time by running independent work in parallel across selected browsers, devices, or remote environments. The phrase also names Applitools’ specific visual-testing workflow: it captures DOM and CSS data, renders that data across a grid, then analyzes the results. Those are related but distinct approaches—not a universal testing method.

How parallel cross-browser testing works

  1. Choose targets. Select browser engines, versions, operating systems, viewport sizes, and devices based on the users and compatibility risks you need to cover. Playwright, for example, lets you define browser projects, with Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit among its default examples: Playwright browser projects.
  2. Write or reuse tests. A functional test can load a page, enter data, or submit a form, then check expected behavior. A compatible test may be reused across several browser environments. SmartBear describes recording a web test locally, removing local-browser-specific operations, and using XPath or CSS selectors to find elements in remote browsers: SmartBear parallel testing documentation.
  3. Distribute independent work. Run tests or browser projects concurrently on local workers, a self-managed Selenium Grid, or a hosted browser service. SmartBear documents assigning supported tests to remote environments; BrowserStack describes parallel runs on its hosted grid.
  4. Collect and inspect results. Functional assertions show whether interactions and expected outcomes passed. Visual testing can also compare rendered screens against baselines. Results may be aggregated into a single report or log, depending on the tool.
  5. Triage and adjust capacity. Investigate browser-specific failures, visual differences, logs, and infrastructure errors. Increase workers or sessions only when the tests, licenses, service limits, and machine resources allow it.

What “Ultrafast” means

Applitools uses “Ultrafast” in the name of a visual-testing workflow. Its 2020 report describes tests running locally, DOM and CSS data being sent to the Ultrafast Grid for parallel rendering, and Applitools Eyes performing visual analysis afterward: Applitools’ 2020 report. A 2022 Applitools e-book further says Eyes uses data captured by the first test to re-render screens, rather than independently connecting to and loading the application in each cloud environment: Applitools’ 2022 e-book.

That is Applitools’ described mechanism, not the definition of every browser-testing grid. In the common alternative, automation runs in each selected browser environment: browser projects specify targets, while hosted services provision remote sessions and devices. That approach exercises the application in those environments and may be more appropriate when the goal is functional or compatibility testing.

Choose the execution model for the question you need answered

Approach What runs in parallel Useful when Trade-offs to check
Local browser projects Automation tests across configured browser targets, on local workers. You want a framework-based setup and control over the local test environment. Available engines, machine capacity, and test compatibility; Playwright documents Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit project examples.
Self-managed Selenium Grid Automation sessions distributed among browser nodes you manage. You need control over infrastructure or access to an internal application. Setup, maintenance, node capacity, and diagnostic visibility.
Hosted browser/device grid Automation sessions run in a provider’s remote environments. You need remote browser versions, operating systems, or devices without managing all the machines yourself. Session limits, supported combinations, service setup, and secure access to internal apps. BrowserStack says Automate offers 3,000+ desktop and mobile browser combinations and can run hundreds of tests in parallel; these are vendor claims, so confirm current inventory and account limits for your project: BrowserStack Automate.
Captured-page visual rendering Captured DOM/CSS data is rendered across a visual grid and analyzed against visual baselines. You want visual comparison across environments without treating every rendering as a separate application load. Understand the specific vendor’s capture and rendering method and whether it answers your functional-testing needs; Applitools describes this model for its Ultrafast workflow.

How to plan useful parallel coverage

Start from users and risk

List the browsers, versions, operating systems, and device classes that matter to your audience, then prioritize environments implicated by recent defects or critical user journeys. A larger matrix is not automatically better: it adds sessions and results to maintain, and many combinations may offer little extra coverage.

Separate functional and visual checks

Use functional assertions to verify behavior such as navigation, form submission, or expected content. Add visual baselines where appearance differences matter. A visual match does not by itself establish that a form or interaction works, and an interaction passing does not establish pixel-level consistency.

Parallelize independent work, not shared state

Tests that share accounts, mutable data, or a single environment can interfere when run simultaneously. Give workers isolated test data where possible, avoid order-dependent assumptions, and separate tests that cannot safely run concurrently. A suite only gains useful speed when work can be distributed without creating false failures.

Scale workers against the bottleneck

More workers can reduce queue time, but they also require machine resources or remote sessions. SmartBear notes workstation resource constraints and unsupported test categories in its parallel mode; its documentation lists restrictions including image-based tests and certain desktop and local-browser test types. Check product-specific support rather than assuming every test can run concurrently: SmartBear parallel testing constraints.

What vendor performance figures do—and do not—show

Applitools’ 2020 report says its study involved 203 Selenium, Cypress, and Webdriver.IO engineers and 3,112 combined hours spent writing, running, analyzing, reporting, and maintaining 21 cross-environment tests. The same vendor-published report claims an 18× faster full test cycle, 81× more code efficiency, and a 77% increase in engineer satisfaction: Applitools’ 2020 report. These are attributed claims from that report, not independent comparative measurements or a promise of the same gains for another team or tool.

Or skip the browser setup

For a screenshot rather than a full cross-browser automation suite, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its capture can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before taking the shot; each step can be disabled.

Example cURL request (replace the URL with the page to capture):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo free.

Common problems and fixes

  • The run is not faster after adding workers: Tests may be serialized by shared state, limited by remote session capacity, or bottlenecked by the machine or application. Check worker utilization, queues, and test isolation before increasing concurrency again.
  • Some tests fail only in parallel: Look for shared accounts or records, assumptions about test order, and unsupported test types. Isolate data or run incompatible tests separately.
  • A browser-specific failure is hard to reproduce: Preserve the browser, version, operating system, viewport, logs, and test artifacts with the failure. Re-run the same target before changing the test; a remote infrastructure error and a product defect require different fixes.
  • Visual comparisons show unexpected differences: Confirm that the baseline and new capture use the intended browser, viewport, and rendering mode. Determine whether the difference is an expected environment variation or a genuine regression before updating a baseline.
  • A hosted grid cannot reach a development site: Check the service’s supported access method for private environments, plus authentication and network restrictions. Do not assume a remote browser can reach a local-only URL without configuration.
  • The intended test cannot run in parallel: Verify the tool’s supported test categories and constraints. SmartBear documents restrictions for its parallel mode, including image-based tests and certain desktop and local-browser types.
