Grid routes remote sessions to machines with the requested browsers; begin with a small, representative matrix, wait for application-specific readiness, and expand parallel capacity only when the suite is reliable.
What you need to run Selenium tests across browsers and operating systems
Selenium WebDriver automates browsers through browser-specific drivers. Its tests are portable, but browser implementations are not identical: use the appropriate browser Options class and request only capabilities that your Grid can supply. Selenium Grid lets a client route a session to remote browser instances, including machines with different operating systems and browser versions. Selenium’s overview describes WebDriver and Grid’s role.
- A Selenium language binding for your project and a test runner.
- The browsers you intend to test, available locally or on Grid nodes.
- For remote execution, a running Selenium Server/Grid and browser capacity matching your requested options.
- A test matrix based on your users and compatibility risks; Selenium does not prescribe one universal matrix.
The Selenium downloads page lists Selenium 4.49.0 as the stable client and server release dated September 9, 2026. The Python API documentation title identifies 4.50.0, so official pages have a version-label discrepancy. Check the release listing when choosing a version rather than assuming the labels match.
Install Selenium and verify a local browser session
For Python, Selenium’s documentation recommends a virtual environment and installs the binding with pip install -U selenium. Selenium Manager is integrated into bindings by default on most supported platforms and browsers to manage drivers; manual driver installation and PATH setup remain options when required. Use the corresponding official binding if your project uses Java, JavaScript, .NET, or Ruby. See the Python getting-started guide.

python -m venv .venv
# Activate the environment for your shell, then:
pip install -U selenium
A small local smoke test checks the basic lifecycle. The assertion is illustrative; replace it with a condition that matters to your application.
from selenium import webdriver
def test_homepage_title():
driver = webdriver.Chrome()
try:
driver.get("https://example.com")
assert "Example" in driver.title
finally:
driver.quit()
Run this through your chosen test runner—for example, pytest—after installing it in the same environment. Always call quit() in cleanup so the browser session is closed even when an assertion fails. Selenium’s Python API documentation shows the WebDriver lifecycle and supported browser material.
Wait for the application state your test actually needs
A URL navigation’s normal wait completes at the document load event; that does not guarantee a single-page application has finished rendering or updating. Before an assertion, wait for a meaningful condition such as a target element becoming visible, a state transition completing, or a page message appearing. A fixed sleep is not evidence that the application is ready and can make tests both slow and flaky.

Selenium’s browser Options documentation notes that changing page-load strategy requires a sufficient waiting strategy. Prefer an explicit condition tied to the behavior under test over shortening navigation waits and hoping the application catches up. See browser Options and page-load strategy guidance.

Start a local Selenium Grid
For a quick remote-driver setup on one machine, Selenium Grid standalone mode places Grid components in one process. The official quick start requires Java 11 or higher, browser software, browser drivers (or Selenium Manager configuration), and the Selenium Server JAR. The default Grid endpoint and UI are http://localhost:4444.
- Download the Selenium Server JAR from the Selenium downloads page.
- Start standalone mode, replacing the version placeholder with the downloaded file’s name:
java -jar selenium-server-<version>.jar standalone - Point a RemoteWebDriver client to
http://localhost:4444and pass the browser’s Options object.
Standalone is limited to one machine and is intended for local remote-driver debugging, quick suites, and simple CI setups. For capacity across machines, configure a Grid Hub and Nodes with the operating systems and browser versions you need. Selenium provides deployment links for Docker and Kubernetes on its downloads page. See Grid setup and deployment guidance.

Choose a browser for a remote test session
In Selenium 4, create the browser-specific Options object and pass it to RemoteWebDriver. The browser name comes from that Options instance. Version and platform capabilities are requests: Grid must have matching node capacity, and nodes must advertise or provide the requested environment. Browser version is optional.
import java.net.URL;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebDriver;
import org.openqa.selenium.chrome.ChromeOptions;
import org.openqa.selenium.remote.RemoteWebDriver;
ChromeOptions options = new ChromeOptions();
options.setCapability("browserVersion", "stable");
options.setCapability("platformName", "Linux");
WebDriver driver = new RemoteWebDriver(
new URL("http://localhost:4444"), options);
try {
driver.get("https://example.com");
// Assert the behavior under test.
} finally {
driver.quit();
}
This Java pattern follows Selenium’s Grid examples. The value stable is a request, not a promise that Grid will find a matching browser. If it cannot, check available node capacity and adjust the requested version or platform to an environment that exists.

Build a useful browser and platform matrix
Start with combinations that reflect your users and the parts of the product most likely to break. Add browser versions or operating systems when compatibility risk justifies the runtime and maintenance cost. Grid can connect machines with different operating systems and browser versions, but the right matrix depends on your product; no single list fits every team.
| Stage | What to run | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Smoke coverage | A small set of core flows on the primary browser/platform combinations your users rely on. | Finds broad regressions quickly without making every change wait on a large matrix. |
| Expanded coverage | Add browser versions or platforms tied to user share, release changes, or known compatibility risk. | Tests additional environments where there is a concrete reason to do so. |
| Grid capacity | Add nodes advertising the browser/platform combinations requested by the test clients. | Allows remote routing to the environments the matrix actually needs. |
Add parallel execution without making the suite flaky
Grid is designed to run tests in parallel across multiple machines. First make each test’s browser session and test data independent so concurrent runs do not interfere. Then increase concurrency gradually and measure the suite in your own environment: more workers can increase resource pressure rather than shorten total runtime.
Grid sizing depends on concurrent sessions, node count, and available resources. Selenium’s suggested resource values are references, not guarantees for a particular machine. See Grid scaling and resource notes.
Best Value
Protect the Grid endpoint
Selenium’s warning is direct: “Selenium Grid must be protected from external access using appropriate firewall permissions.” An exposed Grid can let untrusted parties use its infrastructure, access internal applications and files, or run custom binaries. Keep the endpoint reachable only from trusted test clients; do not expose an unauthenticated Grid to the public internet. See Selenium’s Grid security guidance.
Troubleshoot common cross-browser failures
- The browser or session cannot be created: confirm the browser is installed locally or on a Grid node, and that Selenium can manage or find its driver. Selenium Manager handles driver management on most supported platforms by default; use manual driver and PATH configuration if your environment requires it.
- Grid cannot match the requested browser or platform: remove or revise the optional
browserVersionorplatformNamerequest, or add a node that provides the requested combination. Capabilities select available capacity; they do not install browsers. - An assertion runs before the page is ready: replace a generic navigation assumption or fixed delay with a wait for the element, transition, or message the test depends on.
- Tests pass alone but fail in parallel: isolate sessions and test data, then reduce concurrency to establish whether node resources or shared state are the cause before scaling again.
- The Grid is reachable by unintended clients: restrict network access with firewall permissions and keep it off public unauthenticated routes.
Or skip the browser setup
If your immediate job is to capture a page rather than interactively test browser behavior, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It is not a replacement for Selenium interaction or assertions. A single GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Example using cURL (see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation):
Quick Recap
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers identifying the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for the free plan.
