Automated visual testing catches unintended changes in how a page or component renders. A practical first setup is Playwright Test’s built-in screenshot comparison: capture a small number of stable UI states, review the first reference screenshots, and compare later runs against those approved baselines. Keep the browser and operating-system environment consistent, and treat every baseline update as a code-review decision—not an automatic fix.
What automated visual testing checks
A visual test drives an interface to a chosen state, captures a screenshot, and compares it with an accepted reference image. A difference flags a change in appearance for review. This complements functional tests, which check behavior such as whether a button works or a form submits; a functional assertion can pass while spacing, colors, or layout have regressed.
Not every difference is a defect. A redesign or intentional UI change should result in a new approved baseline; an unexpected difference should be investigated before the old expectation is replaced. Applitools’ overview of visual UI testing describes this checkpoint-and-review model.
Start with Playwright’s screenshot matcher
Playwright Test includes toHaveScreenshot(). On its first run, it creates reference screenshots; later runs compare the rendered result with those references. The following minimal example assumes a Playwright Test project and a page available at /:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('/');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home.png');
});
Run the test with your project’s usual Playwright Test command. The first run produces the baseline image; inspect that image and confirm it represents the intended page before relying on subsequent comparisons. Playwright documents the matcher and reference-image behavior in its visual comparisons guide.
Choose a useful checkpoint
Begin with one important page or component and a small set of meaningful states. For example, capture the initial view and one interaction state that users depend on. Tests are easier to interpret when each checkpoint has a clear purpose and the UI has settled into a known state.
Keep the rendering environment stable
Screenshot output can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, and headless mode. Create and compare baselines in a controlled environment; in particular, keep the operating system and browser versions the same. Playwright explicitly advises this for visual regression runs in its visual comparisons documentation and best practices.

Review differences and update baselines deliberately
When a comparison fails, inspect the diff and the page state that produced it. Determine whether the change is an intended design update, a real regression, or rendering noise. Fix an unintended change in the application or stabilize the test; update the reference only after confirming the new appearance is correct.
- Read the diff: identify which area changed and whether the change matches the pull request’s intent.
- Check the test state: verify the page loaded the expected content and interactions completed before capture.
- Check environment drift: confirm the test used the same browser and operating-system versions as the approved baseline.
- Approve intentionally: if the UI change is correct, regenerate or update the baseline using the workflow supported by your Playwright setup, then review the changed image alongside the code.
Do not accept a baseline merely because it makes a failed test pass. A baseline is an expected result that future runs will trust, so it should be reviewed like other test changes.
Control dynamic and unstable page regions
Personalized content, timestamps, rotating promotions, animation, and network-dependent data can make otherwise correct pages render differently from run to run. First prefer stable test data and a predictable page state. Capture after the relevant content is ready rather than while it is changing.

If an area genuinely cannot be made stable, use a narrowly scoped exclusion or matching control supported by the tool you selected. For example, Applitools’ Playwright integration documents ignored regions in eyes.check() configuration. Exclude only the volatile region: broad masks can hide real layout or styling regressions.
Choose local or hosted visual review
Playwright’s built-in matcher is a direct starting point when the team is comfortable managing reference images in its test workflow. Hosted integrations can add review or checkpoint features, but they also introduce vendor setup and terms to evaluate. Current pricing, contractual data handling, and plan limits are not established by the product documentation cited here; check the vendor’s current terms before choosing.
| Approach | What the documentation establishes | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Playwright Test built-in comparison | toHaveScreenshot() compares against reference screenshots and generates references on the first run. Playwright documentation |
Your team manages snapshots and controls rendering-environment variation. |
| Applitools Eyes with Playwright | The integration documents eyes.check(), full-page capture, match levels, and ignored regions. Applitools integration documentation |

| Percy with Playwright | The Percy Playwright project documents a client package and a Percy CLI flow for uploading snapshots to a project. | Confirm current project configuration and vendor terms before adopting the hosted workflow. |
Compare candidate workflows by where images are stored, how reviewers approve changes, how dynamic regions are handled, which browser or device coverage is needed, CI integration, and current cost and data-handling terms. Do not choose on price without checking current vendor information.

Put visual checks into the team’s test workflow
Run visual checks where the team already reviews code and test results, and make ownership explicit: someone should investigate unexpected diffs, while intentional baseline changes should receive review. Start with a few high-value checkpoints, then add coverage when those tests are useful and maintainable. This avoids turning a large collection of noisy screenshots into routine failures that reviewers learn to ignore.
Visual tests are not accessibility tests
A screenshot comparison can show that an interface looks different, but it does not establish that the interface is accessible. Playwright’s accessibility guidance notes that automated scans can catch common issues such as contrast and labeling problems, while also recommending manual assessment and inclusive user testing. Use visual checks alongside accessibility automation and human evaluation, not as a substitute for either. See Playwright’s accessibility testing guidance.
