A common open-source route is cypress-axe, which adds axe-core checks to Cypress tests; Cypress also offers a paid Cypress Accessibility option in Cypress Cloud.
Choose how to run accessibility checks
There are two documented ways to add automated scanning to a Cypress workflow:
| Approach | Where checks run | Useful when | What to account for |
|---|---|---|---|
cypress-axe |
In the Cypress test, against the current rendered page or component state. | You want open-source, test-level scans integrated with existing tests. | Use its documented setup and confirm compatibility with the versions in your project; a current compatibility matrix and exact package versions are not established here. |
| Cypress Accessibility | In Cypress Cloud, using captured test-run data. | Your team wants accessibility results in the Cypress Cloud workflow and accepts a paid cloud offering. | Check current plan terms and verify the axe-core version and configuration used for a particular run. |
Either way, treat the scan as one layer of testing. Ordinary Cypress assertions are still needed for interface behavior and expectations that a generic rule set cannot infer.
Add an in-test scan with cypress-axe
Cypress documents the community cypress-axe plugin as a way to inject axe-core and call checkA11y() on the page or component currently under test. Follow the plugin’s current installation and support instructions rather than assuming a package version: the documented material does not establish an up-to-date Cypress and plugin compatibility matrix.

- Install and configure
cypress-axeaccording to its current documentation for your Cypress setup. - In each test, visit the route or mount the component, then perform the interactions needed to reach the state users should be able to use.
- Call the plugin’s documented axe injection command, then call
checkA11y()to scan that rendered state. - Run the test and inspect any reported violations. Fix the underlying interface issue, then rerun the test.
The exact command names and setup beyond checkA11y() depend on the plugin’s current instructions; do not copy a setup snippet from an unrelated version.
Scan meaningful states, not just initial page loads
An accessibility scan evaluates the rendered state it reaches. A test that checks only the initial page will not evaluate a menu after it opens, validation feedback after an invalid submission, or content revealed by an interaction. Build scans into the routes and states that matter to users.
- Include key routes and components rather than relying on one representative page.
- Exercise important controls before scanning, such as opening navigation, submitting a form, or revealing a dialog.
- For Cypress Accessibility, remember that results use captured Cypress Cloud/Test Replay run data; plugin scans run inside the test itself.
Know what the default rules do—and do not—cover
Cypress Accessibility’s default ruleset includes axe-core WCAG 2.0 and 2.1 Level A/AA rules and Deque Best Practices. Deque Best Practices are recommendations, not WCAG success criteria. The default excludes three WCAG-tagged rules: color-contrast, no-autoplay-audio, and meta-refresh. WCAG 2.2, AAA, experimental, and deprecated groups are off unless enabled.
For cypress-axe, scope rules and WCAG criteria deliberately using the plugin’s current configuration guidance. A passing scan under one selected ruleset does not mean other criteria were tested. For Cypress Accessibility, its axe-core version may differ from the version installed locally: Cypress says it ordinarily adopts new axe-core versions at least 30 days after release, with earlier updates possible for critical security patches. Verify the version and configuration for the specific run before relying on version-specific findings.

Add assertions that understand your product
A scanner cannot know what accessible name a particular button is supposed to have, whether a custom interaction accomplishes the intended task, or which outcome your product requires. Use ordinary Cypress assertions to check requirements such as:
- Important controls have the expected accessible name and state.
- Keyboard users can reach and operate a component through the intended sequence.
- Submitting a form or activating a control produces the expected result and feedback.
Base these assertions on the interface’s requirements and the needs of its users; they complement, rather than replace, automated rules.

Pair scans with manual evaluation
Automated checks catch rule-based problems, but they cannot resolve every question that requires context or human judgment. Cypress states that automation can catch up to 57% of issues that would appear in a manual audit; this is Cypress’s stated upper bound, not a guarantee for a particular project or a measure of conformance. Cypress also cautions that automated scans cannot prove an interface is accessible. Combine scans with manual evaluation, including keyboard and assistive-technology checks appropriate to the interface and audience.
Common problems and how to respond
- The scan reports nothing, but an interaction is inaccessible: the test may scan only the initial state, or the relevant rule may not be enabled. Exercise the interaction before scanning and review the selected ruleset.
- A rule you expected is absent from Cypress Accessibility results: check whether it is excluded by default, such as
color-contrast, or belongs to a group that is off by default, such as WCAG 2.2 or AAA. - Cloud and local results differ: compare the axe-core version and configuration used in each path; Cypress Accessibility may not use the same version as your local project.
- A clean automated run is being treated as proof of accessibility: keep manual checks and application-specific Cypress assertions in the test plan.
- Plugin setup or commands fail: consult the current
cypress-axeinstallation and usage documentation and verify that its supported versions match your Cypress configuration; an exact current compatibility matrix is not established here.
