There is no single current Android-version ranking that can tell every development team which devices to test. Start with your app’s own Google Play data: use Reach and devices to see who installs the app and on what hardware, then use Android vitals to find the device cohorts where quality problems occur. Use public Android statistics as context—not as a substitute for your app’s audience.
What Android device statistics can—and cannot—tell you
Android’s public Distribution dashboard provides dated snapshots of Google Play devices and selected characteristics. Its device-characteristic snapshot is based on a seven-day period; the snapshot described on the dashboard ended November 24, 2025. It is not a continuously updated census of every Android device or a direct measure of your app’s users. Android Developers’ Distribution dashboard recommends Play Console’s Reach and devices for more robust, app-relevant decisions about what to build for, where to launch, and what to test.
No current official global Android OS-version share figure is established by the dashboard content cited here. Avoid treating undated charts, older version shares, or unrelated traffic estimates as current OS distribution. For app-specific coverage, consult your own Play Console data where available.
Do not mistake graphics support for OS-version share
The dashboard’s graphics-capability statistics answer a different question from Android-version distribution. For example, its handheld Vulkan table reports support of 62.09% for Vulkan 1.1, 26.01% for Vulkan 1.3, and 0.67% for Vulkan 1.4 among active devices running API level 23 or higher during the 28-day period ending November 24, 2025. Those figures describe that defined graphics-capability snapshot, not worldwide Android OS-version shares or the installed base of a particular app.

Find the device characteristics that matter to your app
In Play Console, open Reach and devices and examine your app’s distributions and trends. Google documents breakouts for installs, revenue, and issue rates by Android version, RAM, system-on-chip (SoC), Vulkan, OpenGL ES, screen metrics, and ABI. You can also inspect history and export CSV data. Use the dimensions relevant to your app rather than treating every available metric as equally important.
Pair reach with quality evidence. In Android vitals, look for crash, ANR, memory, battery, startup, and rendering problems, then check whether issue rates cluster by Android version, RAM, or processor type. Google’s recent app-quality assessment uses the last 28 days of data and flags emerging crash and ANR issues affecting devices for more than seven days. The signals can help you decide whether a broad cohort needs attention or a particular device family needs investigation. Android vitals overview

Use vitals as a sample, not a census
Android vitals data comes from users who opt in to share usage and diagnostics, across a subset of Android devices and OS versions. It excludes issues on uncertified device models and app versions not installed through Google Play. Play Console shows up to the prior 90 days; the Play Developer Reporting API retains three years. Those coverage limits mean vitals is valuable quality evidence, but it does not represent every Android user or every installation channel. Google Play Console Help: Android vitals data
Turn your app data into a practical test matrix
Choose coverage based on both user reach and the consequences of failure. There is no universal device count or fixed list of phone models that fits every app; the right matrix depends on its audience, features, and risk profile.

- Rank cohorts by app-specific reach. In Reach and devices, identify the Android versions and device characteristics associated with meaningful installs or revenue.
- Overlay issue rates. Use Android vitals to identify cohorts with elevated crashes, ANRs, or other quality problems. Give investigation priority to combinations of high reach and high issue rates.
- Map dependencies to hardware. If the app uses a camera, sensors, location, Bluetooth, or graphics features, include tests that exercise those capabilities. Check graphics API support and ABI where they affect the app.
- Cover display and memory differences. Include relevant screen sizes, densities, and RAM tiers, especially when layout, rendering, or memory pressure is implicated.
- Investigate outliers instead of guessing. When telemetry points to a processor or model cohort, reproduce the failing workflow on a representative device or through a remote device lab.
- Revisit the matrix as the evidence changes. Historical distributions and exported CSVs can help identify shifts, while current issue rates show where coverage is most urgent.
This approach avoids two common mistakes: testing only the newest flagship hardware, and trying to cover every device combination without evidence that it matters to your app.
Emulators, physical phones, and remote device access
Emulators are useful for fast iteration and repeatable virtual configurations. Add physical-device testing when behavior depends on hardware or when telemetry identifies device-specific failures. Google’s Firebase Test Lab guide notes that device testing can reveal issues that do not occur in Android Studio emulators. Test Lab results can include summaries, videos, screenshots, pass/fail or flaky outcomes, and raw logs or failure details. Firebase Test Lab: Get started testing for Android

Device labs and capacity
Test Lab’s catalog lists available device options and aggregate capacity labels. Google defines capacity by the number of online devices in its lab; low-capacity choices can take longer, particularly when running many tests. A capacity label is not a real-time queue estimate, and catalog availability can change, so check the live catalog when planning a run. Firebase Test Lab: Available testing devices
Remote physical devices
Android Device Streaming lets developers connect remotely to physical Android devices in Google data centers from Android Studio. In an August 2025 announcement, Google said Android Partner Device Labs were stable in Android Studio Narwhal Feature Drop and named partner devices from Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO, OnePlus, vivo, and others. The announcement described a monthly quota with possible charges beyond it and said the catalog was being updated; confirm the current catalog and billing terms before relying on those details. Firebase Test Lab service transition
Google’s Firebase migration FAQ says Firebase Test Lab executions are supported until September 30, 2027, with Google Cloud’s Developer Device Platform identified as the replacement. The FAQ states that the new platform matches Firebase Test Lab rates through April 30, 2027; after that, a new pay-per-use and per-device-slot subscription offer applies. It also says billing must be enabled for Developer Device Platform. These are dated service and pricing terms, so verify the FAQ before committing to a long-term workflow. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Capture screenshots for visual checks and bug reports
Device statistics help decide what hardware to test; screenshots can document layouts, reproduce visual regressions, and attach clear evidence to issues. For Android-native app testing, use emulator or physical-device capture as appropriate to the workflow. For web pages that your team needs to document as part of QA, a screenshot API can capture a URL without setting up a browser in each script. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers; its clean-shot handling removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed. Details and options are in the ScreenshotNeo overview.
Or skip the browser setup
One GET request can return a screenshot. Replace the target URL with the page you need; the API key is available through your ScreenshotNeo account. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents use screenshots through tools including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
FAQ
Which Android devices should I test my app on?
Use your app’s Reach and devices and Android vitals data to prioritize representative OS versions, hardware characteristics, and cohorts with quality issues. The evidence does not establish a universal model list.
Do I need to own physical Android phones?
No. A physical device can help validate hardware-dependent behavior, but remote device streaming and device labs can provide access without buying every handset. Check their current availability and terms before planning coverage.
Can public Android statistics tell me the current OS-version split?
The cited public dashboard content does not establish a current global OS-version share figure. Its dated snapshots and graphics capability table should not be presented as that statistic.
