Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Make a screenshot accessible by giving it an alternative that matches its purpose in the page: describe useful information it uniquely conveys, use alt="" when it is decorative or redundant, and describe the action or destination when it functions as a link or control. For a complex interface, use short alt text to identify it and provide the important details in nearby text or a table.
Start with what the screenshot is for
Before writing alt text, ask what someone who cannot see the image needs to know to understand or use the page. The goal is not to narrate every visible pixel. It is to convey the information or function the image adds in this context. The same screenshot may need different alternatives in different places, or none at all if it repeats information already provided.
W3C’s Images Tutorial puts the decision in context: “The text alternative needs to be determined by the author, depending on the usage, context, and content of an image.” W3C WAI Images Tutorial
Choose the right alternative for the screenshot
| Screenshot’s role | What to provide | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Decorative or redundant | Use an empty alternative, alt="", if omitting the image would leave the same information and function available in the surrounding content. |
<img src="page-shot.png" alt=""> |
| Informative | Briefly state the essential message, state, or task-relevant detail that is not already available in adjacent text. | <img src="settings-shot.png" alt="The settings page shows dark mode enabled."> |
| Functional: a link or control | Describe what activating the image does or where it leads, rather than merely describing its appearance. | <a href="/setup"><img src="setup-shot.png" alt="Open setup instructions"></a> |
| Contains meaningful text | Include the meaningful words shown in the image. If the text is substantial, put it in visible page text instead of making alt text carry the whole passage. | <img src="warning.png" alt="Warning: Save changes before leaving."> |
| Complex dashboard, chart, or workflow | Use concise alt text to identify the image, then provide its important values, relationships, or steps in nearby prose, a list, or a structured table. | <img src="traffic-dashboard.png" alt="Website traffic dashboard for April; data summarized below."> |
These examples illustrate the decisions; adapt them to what is actually visible and to the surrounding page. WAI recommends a short alternative plus a detailed description elsewhere for complex images. W3C WAI Easy Checks

Write alt text that adds information, not noise
- Lead with the key message or relevant state, not “Screenshot of” unless identifying the image as a screenshot helps distinguish it.
- Do not list every button, color, or decorative detail. Include only details that help someone understand the content or complete the task.
- Check the surrounding paragraph, caption, and link text. Do not repeat information that is already clear there; describe what the image uniquely adds.
- If the screenshot contains important instructions or other text, preserve the meaningful wording. For substantial text, make an equivalent available as page text.
- For an image link or control, write the alternative for its action or destination. A visual description alone may not explain what activating it does.
ADA.gov advises that useful text should be “short and descriptive.” ADA.gov: Guidance on Web Accessibility and the ADA
Provide a text equivalent for complex screenshots
A long alt string is a poor substitute for a readable explanation of a dense dashboard, chart, or multi-step interface. Keep the image’s alt concise, then present the information people need in a nearby format that suits it:

- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- Use a table for values, categories, or comparisons.
- Use prose to explain a trend or relationship.
- Use an ordered list for a sequence of steps.
- Use a short caption or paragraph to explain what state the interface demonstrates.
Make the equivalent easy to find in the page flow and refer to it from the image alternative when that helps orient the reader. Do not rely on color or visual position alone to communicate an important relationship.
Check the image in its page context
- Read the nearby text and identify the information or function the screenshot contributes.
- Decide whether it is decorative or redundant, informative, functional, text-containing, or complex.
- Write the alternative—or provide a visible equivalent for complex content—using the appropriate approach above.
- Review the result in context: does the text communicate the image’s purpose without repeating nearby content or adding irrelevant visual detail?
- Verify that informative images have an
altattribute. Usealt=""for decorative images rather than omitting the attribute.
Automated checks can identify missing alt attributes, but they cannot decide whether the text is appropriate. WAI says: “Automated tests can tell you if alt is missing. To determine if the alternative text is appropriate, you need to see the image and judge it in context.” W3C WAI Easy Checks ADA.gov likewise cautions that an automated checker is a tool to use carefully, not proof that a page is accessible. Understand what alt text does—and does not—establish
W3C’s image guidance connects to WCAG success criterion 1.1.1 Non-text Content (Level A), 1.4.5 Images of Text (Level AA), and 1.4.9 Images of Text (No Exception) (Level AAA). Guidance about choosing useful alternatives is not itself a separate criterion, and adding one alt string does not establish conformance. The reviewed WCAG 2.1 Recommendation describes criteria as testable and technology-independent and discusses combining automated testing with human evaluation; it is version 2.1 guidance, not a basis for calling that version the current WCAG standard. Check the current standard and the policy or jurisdiction that applies before making a compliance claim. W3C WCAG 2.1 Recommendation
