For a dedicated YouTube loop PC, choose OBS’s Windows GPU preference based on how the picture enters OBS—not simply because the PC is used for streaming. In Windows 10 version 1809 or later and Windows 11, OBS recommends High Performance for Game Capture and Window Capture, and Power Saving for Display Capture. A local video played through an OBS media source is not automatically a game or display capture, so don’t change the GPU preference unless your capture path or observed performance gives you a reason.
The Windows preference determines which GPU runs OBS. It is separate from the encoder selected in OBS Output settings. Set and test those independently.
Choose the Windows GPU setting for your capture method
On a Windows PC with multiple GPUs, Windows can assign OBS to a particular GPU. OBS’s official GPU Selection Guide gives these recommendations for Windows 10 version 1809 and later, and Windows 11:

The recommendation is about capture compatibility, not a universal rule that OBS should always use the discrete GPU. If you play a local recording with a media source, keep the current setting if the stream is stable; the official table does not give a separate media-source recommendation. Set the preference in Windows
- Identify whether OBS is using Game Capture, Window Capture, Display Capture, or a local media source.
- Close OBS before changing the Windows preference.
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Add the OBS executable if it is not listed:
C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe. - Choose the preference matching the capture method above, save it, then reopen OBS and test the actual loop.
These Windows instructions and the capture-method recommendations are from OBS’s guide; the choice for a media source is an application of the guide’s scope, not a separately published OBS recommendation.
Choose an encoder separately in OBS
The Windows graphics preference controls which GPU runs OBS. The encoder is chosen in OBS’s Output settings and determines how the video is encoded for delivery. OBS says hardware encoders can move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component in a GPU, but the available options depend on the installed hardware, OBS version, and destination requirements. Don’t assume a particular option, such as NVENC, is available on every system.

For an encoder comparison, first check what OBS actually offers in Output settings. Use a supported hardware encoder if appropriate for your configuration, then test for rendering or encoding overload. OBS’s guidance explains the general role of hardware encoding: OBS Hardware Encoding. Its advanced NVENC controls are specific to NVIDIA and OBS 31.0-era features, not a generic setup guide for all GPUs: Advanced NVENC Options (31.0).
Match the OBS output to YouTube’s ingest requirements
GPU selection cannot compensate for an unsuitable output configuration or inadequate upload capacity. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 live encoding. It recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; the figures below are YouTube’s recommendations, not guarantees that a particular connection can sustain them.

These are YouTube’s published recommended bitrates in its encoder settings guidance, accessed 2026-10-03. Consult the current YouTube table for other output combinations and configure the encoder and stream settings accordingly: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Test the loop before relying on it
- Start the intended loop in OBS using the actual capture source, encoder, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate you plan to use.
- Check OBS’s statistics for rendering or encoding overload and watch for instability during the test.
- Check YouTube’s stream health rather than treating a successful OBS start as proof the delivered stream is healthy.
- If performance is overloaded, inspect resource use and reduce competing GPU work before considering new hardware.
OBS lists running the application as administrator on Windows as one troubleshooting option for GPU overload, not a guaranteed fix. See OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting. YouTube also recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health.

Troubleshoot by symptom before changing hardware
- Display Capture has problems after assigning High Performance: close OBS and try the Power Saving preference OBS recommends for Display Capture.
- Game Capture or Window Capture is unstable after assigning Power Saving: try High Performance, then retest the same scene.
- A local media-source loop is stable: there is no media-source-specific GPU preference in the cited OBS guide; avoid changing a working setup based only on the fact that it is a loop.
- OBS reports rendering or encoding overload: inspect resource use and competing GPU work, then test again. Running OBS as administrator is an option on Windows, not a guaranteed solution.
- YouTube reports stream health problems: verify the codec, CBR setting, keyframe interval, bitrate, resolution, and frame rate against YouTube’s current guidance and the connection’s capacity.
- An encoder option is missing: check whether the installed GPU and OBS version support it; hardware encoder availability is not universal.
Do you need a different GPU for a loop PC?
A dedicated loop stream does not, by itself, establish a need for a second or more powerful GPU. The relevant factors are the capture path, the hardware and encoder actually available, the target output, and measured performance during a real test. Check OBS statistics and YouTube stream health before treating a GPU purchase as the answer; the documented guidance does not prescribe a GPU model for this setup.
