1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo shrink a website thumbnail without blurring its lettering, first move titles and labels into HTML whenever you can. If text must stay inside the image, size the image for its actual display slot, compare formats and compression levels, and judge the smallest text at the size readers will see. There is no quality setting that works for every image.
Should text be part of a thumbnail image?
Usually, no. Render titles, labels, and captions as HTML text, styled with CSS and web fonts, and keep the thumbnail focused on photography or illustration. Web text remains selectable and searchable, follows page typography as it resizes, and is easier to make accessible. Google’s web.dev format guide advises reconsidering text encoded in an image asset: Choose the right image format.
If wording is essential to the artwork, or the image is a screenshot that must preserve its original content, keep the text in the bitmap—but review it more carefully than you would a photo. Compression can soften letter strokes or introduce artifacts around sharp edges.
How do you reduce file size without blurring small text?
1. Start with the display dimensions
Find the thumbnail’s rendered width and height in the page layout, then create candidates suited to that slot and the display density you need. Avoid delivering a very large original and relying on the browser to shrink it: sending appropriately sized responsive candidates can reduce bytes on smaller displays. Check which candidate the browser actually loads.

- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Do not create every imaginable size. Each extra size and format adds markup and cache entries, so make variants for real layout or display needs.
2. Compare formats and compression modes
For a photo-heavy thumbnail, compare JPEG, lossy WebP, and lossy AVIF where your supported browsers permit it. For lettering, flat-color graphics, or line art that cannot be separated from the image, include a lossless version in the comparison. Lossy compression may be less effective on sharp edges, line art, and text; high-contrast colored text on a flat background can also show artifacts from chroma subsampling. See web.dev’s image performance guidance.

WebP is widely supported across modern browsers, while AVIF support is less broad according to that guide. Choose fallbacks according to your audience and compatibility requirements rather than assuming every browser can use the newest format.
3. Inspect at actual size, then check a crop
Place candidate files in the page or preview them at the thumbnail’s actual display size. Small text that looks crisp when enlarged may be unreadable at its real size. Also zoom into the smallest lettering and sharpest edges to look for softened strokes, halos, color bleeding, ringing, or blockiness. These are practical visual checks; there is no single formal test or universal pass threshold.

4. Keep the smallest candidate that passes
Try multiple quality levels for the same image and compare the resulting file sizes and appearance. Google’s web.dev guide says there is no universal compression setting suitable for every case. Record the dimensions, format, file size, and quality setting you select if you need to repeat the process consistently; do not treat a setting that worked for one thumbnail as automatically safe for another.
Which image format keeps text sharp?
| Candidate | When to try it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| JPEG, lossy | Photo-heavy thumbnails and compatibility needs | Inspect small lettering and sharp edges; lossy artifacts can affect them. |
| WebP, lossy | Photo-heavy images when modern-browser support fits your audience | Compare its actual file size and appearance with other candidates. |
| AVIF, lossy | When supported browsers and delivery setup allow it | Provide a fallback if your required browser coverage needs one. |
| Lossless format candidate | Text-heavy or sharp-edged artwork where preserving pixel detail matters | Confirm the resulting file size is acceptable; lossless output may be larger. |
No format guarantees legible lettering if the source is too small, the display slot is too small, or the chosen compression damages the strokes. Judge the actual asset in context.

How should you deliver fallbacks and responsive variants?
A <picture> element can offer AVIF and WebP sources followed by a JPEG or PNG fallback, as appropriate for the site’s browser requirements. For example:
<picture>
<source type="image/avif" srcset="/images/story-640.avif 640w, /images/story-960.avif 960w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 640px">
<source type="image/webp" srcset="/images/story-640.webp 640w, /images/story-960.webp 960w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 640px">
<img src="/images/story-640.jpg" srcset="/images/story-640.jpg 640w, /images/story-960.jpg 960w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 640px" alt="Description of the thumbnail image">
</picture>
Replace the example paths, dimensions, and sizes value with candidates and layout measurements that match your page. If a server varies the delivered image according to the request’s Accept header, web.dev says to send an appropriate Vary response header so caches distinguish the representations.

Keep the candidate set proportionate: more variants can save bytes for particular displays, but also mean more generated files, cache entries, and HTML complexity. An image CDN or optimizer may simplify that work, but weigh its cost and operational value for your setup. web.dev names Squoosh and ImageOptim as possible compression routes as well as image optimization services; it notes that some automated services may not be financially viable for every user.
How do you preserve accessibility when a thumbnail contains information?
Use HTML for wording that belongs to the page, and give meaningful images an appropriate text alternative. A photograph may need a concise description; a graph or diagram that conveys detailed information needs a complete text equivalent of the information, not merely a compression choice or a short label. The W3C WAI Images Tutorial explains this requirement for complex images.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot thumbnail rather than a hand-optimized image, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot in PNG, JPEG, or WebP from one GET request. Its cleanup accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. ScreenshotNeo also has an MCP server with screenshot tools for AI agents.
For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture of a page; replace the URL with the page you want and provide your API key:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free.
