Does YouTube Re-encode Prerecorded Video During a Live Stream?

YouTube transcodes live streams into different delivery formats, including streams made from prerecorded video. Here’s what your encoder settings do—and don’t—control.

Yes. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into different output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. A prerecorded video sent as a live stream should therefore be expected to undergo YouTube-side transcoding. Your source file or encoder creates the incoming stream; YouTube then processes it for delivery.

What “re-encode” means in this case

There are two distinct stages. First, a creator or streaming tool encodes the prerecorded video into a live feed that YouTube can ingest. Second, YouTube transcodes the incoming live stream into multiple delivery formats. YouTube’s published guidance describes automatic transcoding for live streams generally, but does not specify whether prerecorded and camera-originated inputs follow different internal processing paths.

That distinction matters: settings such as codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate describe the feed sent to YouTube. They do not prove that viewers receive that same encoding unchanged. YouTube says it creates different output formats, but its cited guidance does not establish a universal viewer-side codec or resolution ladder.

Which settings control the feed you send

YouTube’s encoder recommendations apply to the incoming stream, not to a guaranteed viewer-side output encoding. Its settings page says encoder settings are detected automatically by default and lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video, with frame rates up to 60 fps.

Input setting YouTube guidance What it means
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265; 14 Mbps for H.264 Recommended encoder input bitrates, not a promise that viewers receive the same bitrate or encoding.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds Set this in the encoder or streaming software that sends the live feed.
Video codec H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS Supported input options listed on YouTube’s settings page.
Frame rate Up to 60 fps Maximum listed input frame rate; it does not guarantee a specific delivered format.

These recommendations can change, so consult YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions when configuring a stream. Sending a higher-quality input can improve what YouTube has to work with, but it does not switch off the platform’s transcoding.

Does archiving preserve the original encoding?

No such guarantee is stated in the cited YouTube guidance. YouTube says encoder-created live streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive availability rule, not a promise that the resulting archive is a bit-for-bit copy of the uploaded source file or its original encoding. See YouTube’s encoder live-stream workflow for the archiving detail.

What to do before sending a prerecorded stream

  1. Choose an encoder or streaming tool that can send your prerecorded video as a live feed to YouTube.
  2. Set its codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval using YouTube’s current input recommendations as a starting point.
  3. Test the stream before the event, check its preview in Live Control Room and monitor stream health. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; for higher-production-value events, it also recommends professional-grade hardware encoders. These steps help with the incoming feed, but do not avoid YouTube’s transcoding. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your prerecorded video needs to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud rather than relying on a computer at home. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
