These are separate failure points in Playwright, so changing the wrong setting may leave the error untouched. The examples below use Playwright as a concrete case; if your script uses another framework, check its corresponding timeout controls.
First, identify which operation timed out
Record the exact exception, stack trace, URL, and failing call for each failed item. A timeout in page.goto() is different from a timeout in page.screenshot(), and both can be cut short by an enclosing Playwright Test deadline.
- Navigation: the page did not meet the requested navigation condition within the navigation timeout.
- Screenshot: navigation may have completed, but screenshot generation did not finish within its own timeout.
- Test or job: an outer deadline ended the work, even if the individual operation had a longer allowance.
Keep the failed URL and operation in your logs. A larger timeout gives an operation more time; it does not explain why a specific URL is slow, unreachable, or otherwise failing.
Fix a navigation timeout in Playwright
page.goto() accepts a navigation-specific timeout and a waitUntil condition. Playwright documents load as the default. Use the earliest condition that still gives your screenshot the page state it needs, then verify that the important visual content has appeared. Playwright’s navigation API reference describes the available conditions.

Playwright’s API documentation says: “’networkidle’ – DISCOURAGED consider using this method for testing, rely on web assertions to assess readiness instead.” A page-specific readiness signal is usually more useful than waiting for every network request to stop.

Check screenshot and outer test timeouts separately
Screenshot generation
If navigation succeeds and the error occurs at page.screenshot(), inspect that operation’s timeout rather than changing navigation alone. The screenshot API reference documents its own timeout option.
Playwright Test deadline
Playwright Test documents a default test timeout of 30 seconds. That allowance is shared by the test function, fixture setup, and beforeEach hooks. Action and navigation timeouts are separate settings; increasing a navigation timeout does not automatically extend the enclosing test’s deadline. Make bulk runs resilient to individual failures
Handle URLs as individual jobs so one slow or unreachable page does not erase the results for the rest of the batch. Store a result for every URL, including success or failure, the operation that failed, elapsed time, and error text. This makes it possible to distinguish recurring navigation problems from screenshot or outer-deadline failures.
- Keep failed URLs and their error details instead of logging only a batch-level failure.
- Decide whether a failure is transient before retrying; repeat work only when it is safe for the target site and its access rules.
- Do not assume a universal concurrency level, retry count, or timeout. The right values depend on the script, runtime, target sites, and URL set.
