How to Screenshot a Login-Protected Website Using Chrome DevTools Protocol

Sign in within the Chrome session you control, confirm the protected page is ready, then send Page.captureScreenshot through Protocol Monitor or a CDP client.

To screenshot a login-protected website with Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP), sign in through the site’s normal flow in the Chrome session you control, open the protected page in that same session, verify the page is ready, then send Page.captureScreenshot to its page target. CDP does not bypass authentication: you need authorized access, and the site may require MFA or other checks.

Choose a CDP workflow

CDP is the protocol Chrome DevTools uses to instrument, inspect, debug, and profile Chrome. Chrome documents two practical ways to send commands:

  • Protocol Monitor: best for a one-off capture or for inspecting commands interactively in DevTools.
  • A CDP client: better when you need a repeatable script or want to incorporate captures into an authorized automation workflow.

Chrome’s Protocol Monitor documentation describes it as a way to view CDP requests and responses made by DevTools and send commands directly. Chrome’s Headless Chrome documentation illustrates programmatic control, including enabling the Page and Runtime domains, navigating, waiting for a load event, and evaluating JavaScript. Its sample uses an older client-library style, so treat it as an illustration of the protocol sequence, not a current library recommendation.

Capture manually with Protocol Monitor

  1. Open Chrome DevTools and go to Settings (the gear icon).
  2. Under Experiments, enable Protocol Monitor. If the panel is not immediately available, close and reopen DevTools.
  3. Open the Protocol Monitor panel from DevTools’ panel menu.
  4. In the same Chrome profile and browser session, sign in to the site using its normal login flow. Complete any required MFA or device checks.
  5. Navigate to the protected page and wait for the relevant content—not just the browser’s load event—to appear.
  6. In Protocol Monitor, select the page target, enter Page.captureScreenshot, and send the command. Chrome’s documentation shows that the command can be sent without parameters; it also demonstrates a parameterized request using JPEG format, such as {"format":"jpeg"}.
  7. Inspect the command response for the screenshot data and save or decode it using the workflow available in your DevTools version.

The exact Protocol Monitor controls can vary with Chrome versions. Use the protocol definitions corresponding to the Chrome version you are running if you need additional capture parameters.

Automate capture through a CDP client

The protocol-level sequence is: launch or connect to a Chrome instance you are authorized to control, authenticate in that browser session, target the page, wait for the page and the content you need, then call Page.captureScreenshot. A load event is a useful milestone, but it does not establish that asynchronous content, images, or animations have finished.

Authentication belongs to the browser session

Use the site’s supported login flow in the same Chrome session that the CDP client controls. A protected site may redirect during login, require MFA, show a consent page, or keep application-specific state. CDP itself does not define one universal cookie-import or login recipe; do not assume that copying a cookie will reproduce a valid session.

Wait for the target state

Chrome’s documented example waits for Page.loadEventFired before continuing. For a real application, also check a site-specific signal that confirms the desired content is present—for example, a known element or text in the page—before capture. Choose a readiness check that does not expose account data in logs.

Client and transport choices

Use a CDP client library when you need a scriptable connection and command handling; follow that library’s current documentation for installation, connection discovery, and response decoding. Chrome’s extensions reference also documents chrome.debugger as an alternate transport for the remote debugging protocol. These approaches provide browser-control access, so use the one appropriate to your environment and permissions.

Protect the session and screenshot

  • Restrict access to remote debugging endpoints and debugging sessions. Treat them as sensitive because CDP can instrument and control the browser.
  • Use a dedicated browser profile for automation when practical, and do not expose authenticated profiles, protocol logs, or screenshots to people or systems that should not see the account.
  • Store captured images and any session material securely; a screenshot can contain personal, financial, or business information even when it contains no visible password.
  • Chrome’s Network documentation says default sanitized HAR exports omit sensitive Cookie, Set-Cookie, and Authorization headers. That statement applies to those HAR exports only; it is not a guarantee that screenshots, CDP logs, or other exported data are sanitized.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The page redirects to sign-in The controlled Chrome session is not authenticated, or the session expired. Complete the site’s normal login flow in that same session, including MFA or device checks if required, then revisit the protected URL.
The screenshot shows a spinner or incomplete content The load event fired before asynchronous content or animation finished. Wait for a site-specific readiness condition and confirm the intended content is visible before sending the capture command.
The command fails or returns an unexpected response The command may have been sent to the wrong target, or its parameters may not match the Chrome protocol version. Confirm that Protocol Monitor is targeting the protected page, inspect the command response, and consult the protocol definitions for the Chrome version in use.
Login cannot be automated reliably The site may rely on MFA, device checks, redirects, consent, or application-specific session state. Use the site’s authorized interactive login flow in the controlled browser. The general Chrome examples do not guarantee automation will work for a particular site.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its one-request API can return a screenshot or PDF; its request options include custom cookies, headers, and Authorization, which can be useful where you are authorized to provide that access. It is not a way around a site’s login or access controls. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details.

For a straightforward page capture, for example:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes supported cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses include page-verdict and billing headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
