First find out which kind of problem you have: OBS connection-related dropped frames point to the network path between your computer and the streaming server, while choppy output or an “encoding overloaded” warning can indicate that your computer is short on GPU or encoding capacity. The fixes differ, so check OBS’s statistics before changing settings.
Identify what is falling behind
In OBS, open View → Stats while streaming or reproducing the problem. Check whether the reported issue is dropped frames associated with the streaming connection, or rendering/encoding lag. The labels and layout can vary by OBS version, but the distinction matters: a game that looks smooth locally does not prove OBS is keeping up.
- Connection-related dropped frames or disconnections: OBS says these mean the connection between your computer and the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. OBS Project calls this a network issue in its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guidance, dated September 30, 2024.
- Choppy stream or recording, or “encoding overloaded”: investigate local rendering, encoding, and scene load. OBS uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes; a game can appear to run acceptably even while OBS falls behind. See OBS Project’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting, dated June 12, 2021.
If both indicators rise, work through both sets of checks rather than assuming one cause explains everything.
Fix connection-related dropped frames
1. Test the ingest server and destination
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream and try another ingest server if your streaming service offers a server choice. Test under similar conditions so the comparison is useful.
- If drops seem specific to one destination, test a different streaming service as a diagnostic comparison. A change in results can help isolate a destination or route issue; it does not by itself identify the precise fault.
2. Lower bitrate to match stable upload capacity
- Open Settings → Output and reduce the video bitrate.
- Use your stable upload capacity—not a brief peak—as the constraint, and stay within the streaming service’s bitrate limits. OBS Project’s 2024 article suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee. If your upload fluctuates, you may need more headroom.
- Stream again and check whether connection drops improve. Lower bitrate can reduce video quality, so make changes in modest steps and judge the result in the actual stream.
There is no bitrate that is universally right for every ISP, route, ingest server, or platform. OBS’s percentage is a starting point, not a substitute for a stable connection or the destination service’s requirements.

3. Check Windows network options cautiously
On Windows, OBS says some users report improvement from Settings → Advanced → Network → Enable network optimizations and Enable TCP pacing. These options are Windows-only; they are not guaranteed fixes. Keep Bind to IP set to Default.
You can also test IPv4 only as a reversible diagnostic step. If it makes no difference, restore IPv4 and IPv6 rather than leaving a change in place without benefit.

Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
4. Isolate software and network interference
- Test whether a VPN, firewall or antivirus, bundled network-optimization software, or an outdated network driver is contributing to the problem. Change one likely cause at a time so you can tell what affected the result.
- If a security program appears to be responsible, re-enable it after the isolation test and add an OBS exception if appropriate. Do not leave security protection disabled as a permanent workaround.
- If you are on Wi-Fi, test a wired connection. This is useful when Wi-Fi is unstable, but a cable is not a universal cure for every network issue.
- When appropriate, restart the modem or router and inspect network cables and other hardware. If the problem persists after these checks, contact your ISP; the issue may be on the connection or route beyond your computer.
5. Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
Dynamic bitrate can lower the bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, reducing dropped frames at the cost of video quality. OBS cautions that it does not repair the underlying connection problem. Treat it as a way to manage symptoms while you investigate stability, not as proof the network is fixed.
Fix rendering or encoding overload
1. Give OBS more GPU headroom
- On Windows, close OBS and reopen it using Run as administrator. OBS presents this as a quick step that can help with GPU overload.
- Close or reduce other GPU-heavy programs you opened, when safe to do so.
- Cap the game’s frame rate near your monitor’s refresh rate or use V-Sync. If OBS still falls behind, lower the game’s graphics settings to leave more GPU capacity for OBS.
2. Reduce OBS output workload if needed
- In OBS, open Settings → Video.
- If 60 fps is not working reliably, try 30 fps. OBS’s 2021 guidance gives this as an example of reducing rendering and encoding work; it also makes motion less smooth.
- If necessary, reduce output resolution as well. Lower resolution and frame rate can ease workload, but change the output’s detail and smoothness. Test the revised settings in the stream or recording.
3. Simplify resource-heavy scenes
- Reduce costly filters and browser sources where you can.
- Use only the source resolution you need, and keep scene collections focused instead of carrying unnecessary sources into active scenes.
- After each change, check OBS Stats again. If local lag improves but connection drops remain, continue with the network checks separately.
Choose the next test by the symptom
| What you observe | First comparison | What a useful result suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Connection drops or intermittent disconnections | Try a different ingest server; compare configured bitrate with stable upload capacity and service limits. | If a server or bitrate change alters the drops, focus on the connection path or available upload headroom. |
| Drops mainly on Wi-Fi | Test a wired connection. | If wired streaming is steadier, investigate Wi-Fi reliability; if not, continue checking the route, hardware, and ISP. |
| Choppy output or “encoding overloaded” | Check rendering/encoding lag, GPU-heavy programs, game frame rate, and scene complexity. | If reducing local load helps, the issue was at least partly local rather than solely a network problem. |
| More than one symptom | Change one factor at a time and recheck OBS Stats. | Separate improvements can reveal that network and local performance both contribute. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to leaving OBS and a computer running at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not stream a live camera feed.
