Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For live streaming, the broadcaster needs stable upload bandwidth—not a particular download speed. Start with the bitrate and settings for your destination platform, then leave room for network variation and other devices. As a rule of thumb, Twitch advises having upload speed equal to the configured stream bitrate plus 30%; its example says a 6 Mbps stream needs at least 8 Mbps upload. That is guidance, not a guarantee: test your connection under realistic conditions before going live.
How much upload speed do you need?
There is no single upload-speed target for every live stream. The required capacity depends on the stream’s resolution, frame rate, codec, and configured bitrate, as well as how reliably your connection can sustain that bitrate. Platform bitrate recommendations describe the feed sent to the service; they are not, by themselves, a universal broadband-plan recommendation.
Use the destination platform’s encoder guidance as your starting point. Then allow headroom for connection fluctuations and any other upload traffic on your network. Twitch’s general practice is to add 30% to the configured stream bitrate. For example, Twitch says a 6 Mbps stream should have at least 8 Mbps upload speed.
YouTube bitrate examples: H.264
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists these recommended H.264 ingest bitrates. They are encoder targets; leave additional upload capacity rather than treating the listed number as your entire internet-speed requirement.

| Resolution and frame rate | YouTube H.264 recommended ingest bitrate | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | Starting encoder target; allow upload headroom. |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | The recommendation is higher than for 720p30. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | A common full-HD target; Twitch’s separate 30% rule of thumb would put the upload target at about 6.5 Mbps before rounding and other traffic. |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | Twitch’s separate example translates a 6 Mbps stream to at least 8 Mbps upload. |
| 2160p (4K) at 30 fps | 42 Mbps | Confirm the applicable codec and platform guidance before choosing settings. |
| 2160p (4K) at 60 fps | 50 Mbps | High-resolution streaming can require substantially more upload capacity. |
YouTube also publishes guidance for AV1 and H.265; the figures above are specifically from its H.264 recommended column. Do not apply YouTube’s bitrate numbers to Twitch or another destination as if they were universal. Check YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the settings you intend to use.
Is 10 Mbps upload enough for live streaming?
It can be enough for some settings, but the number alone cannot settle the question. For example, YouTube’s H.264 recommendations are 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 1080p60. Twitch’s 30% rule of thumb would call for about 6.5 Mbps of upload for a 5 Mbps stream, or at least 8 Mbps for a 6 Mbps stream, before accounting for other traffic and variation. A 10 Mbps connection may provide that headroom if it consistently delivers close to that upload speed; a fluctuating connection or busy household may not.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
For higher-bitrate settings—such as YouTube’s listed 8 Mbps for H.264 720p60 or 42 Mbps for H.264 4K30—10 Mbps upload does not leave the same margin. Choose a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if testing shows the connection cannot sustain the desired settings reliably.
Upload speed for broadcasters versus download speed for viewers
A broadcaster uploads the encoded feed to the streaming platform. A viewer downloads the video from that platform. Those are different sides of the connection, so viewer playback guidance should not be used as a broadcaster’s upload target.

For Twitch playback, the platform lists viewer download guidance of 7–12 Mbps or higher for 1080p60, 3–6 Mbps or higher for 720p60, and 1.1–3 Mbps or higher for 480p. These are viewer-side figures, not broadcaster upload requirements. See Twitch’s playback troubleshooting guidance for its viewer recommendations.
How to test whether your connection is ready
- Confirm your destination and stream settings. Choose the platform, resolution, frame rate, codec, and encoder bitrate you plan to use. Use that platform’s current guidance rather than a generic Mbps target.
- Measure upload speed. Run an upload speed test, and repeat it close to the time you expect to broadcast. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate before streaming.
- Run a representative test stream. Include audio and the amount of movement you expect in the real broadcast; a static scene may not represent the actual stream. YouTube recommends testing before starting and monitoring stream health during the event.
- Check what else is using the connection. Other devices or concurrent uploads can reduce the upload capacity available to your encoder. Twitch specifically warns that other devices using upload bandwidth affect the speed available to stream.
- Watch stream health during the event. If the connection becomes unstable, check the encoder bitrate and actual connection behavior rather than assuming the advertised plan speed is the cause.
YouTube’s steps and encoder recommendations are in its live encoder settings guidance. Twitch’s upload-margin advice is in its How Do I Stream FAQ.

What to check if the stream stutters or drops frames
Stuttering or dropped frames can reflect connection instability or a mismatch between the configured bitrate and the capacity available to the encoder. Start with the actual settings and connection performance; advertised plan speed alone does not show what the stream can sustain at that moment.
- Compare bitrate with measured upload. If the stream bitrate is too close to the upload capacity you can reliably sustain, lower the bitrate or choose less demanding settings and test again.
- Reduce competing traffic. Pause large uploads or other activities that use upload bandwidth, and check whether devices sharing the connection are affecting the stream.
- Investigate Wi-Fi only if it appears to be the weak link. If your computer and router support wired networking, testing over Ethernet can help determine whether local Wi-Fi instability is involved. A cable does not increase the upload capacity provided by your internet plan.
- Use platform-specific troubleshooting. OBS maintains a stream connection troubleshooting guide. Twitch’s broadcasting guidelines also discuss balancing bitrate, internet speed, and hardware.
