A Wowza support response dated July 10, 2025 said native scheduled, multi-file playlist broadcasting was not then available in Wowza Video. Check Wowza’s current status before relying on that limitation. For a single-file workaround, combine your clips into one MP4, use Wowza Video’s Stream from File source, then add YouTube as an external RTMP destination.
What Wowza Video can—and cannot—do for a playlist
Wowza Streaming Cloud is now called Wowza Video; Wowza says existing customers retain product functionality in the user interface and API. Wowza Support explains the name change.
Wowza documents streaming a hosted file as a live-stream source, and it supports looping that source file. That is not the same as selecting several separate files and scheduling them as a playlist. In a Wowza Community response dated July 10, 2025, technical support representative Jason Hilton wrote that the requested multi-file scheduled functionality “doesn’t currently exist in the Wowza Video service” and had been submitted as a feature request. This is a dated answer, not confirmation of the product’s status today; ask Wowza or check its current documentation before building a workflow around it. Read the dated support discussion.
For the workflow Wowza documents, you can use one combined MP4, or stream and repeat one file. If you need a schedule that advances through multiple separate files, Wowza support points to Wowza Streaming Engine with its StreamPublisher module as an alternative. That is a separate product and setup, not a playlist mode within the single-file Wowza Video workflow.

Choose the workflow that matches your videos
| Option | Playlist behavior | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wowza Video, Stream from File | Streams one hosted file; an advanced property can repeat it | A single video or a long combined MP4 | Wowza downloads the file after the stream starts, so playback may not begin immediately. A loop keeps the transcoder running and accruing charges until you stop it. |
| Combine clips into one MP4, then use Wowza Video | Creates a playlist-like sequence inside one file, not a native multi-file playlist | A manageable sequence that can be prepared as one file | In its July 10, 2025 support response, Wowza warned that the combined file’s size and length could make this workaround unusable. Confirm current feature status and practical limits. |
| Wowza Streaming Engine with StreamPublisher | Identified by Wowza support as an option for playlist scheduling | A true multi-file schedule | It is a different Wowza product and workflow; the cited support response does not provide current setup steps. |
Prepare a single-file broadcast
1. Decide whether to combine or loop
If you need several clips to play in sequence using Wowza Video, first assemble them into one MP4 using an editing or encoding workflow appropriate to your files. Check that the combined file’s duration and size are practical for your account and hosting location; the July 2025 support answer specifically cautions that a very large or long combined file may not be usable. If you need only one video to repeat, keep it as one file and use Wowza’s loop setting instead.
2. Host the MP4 where Wowza can fetch it
Wowza’s Stream a file in Wowza Video guide lists HTTP, HTTPS, GS, and S3 source protocols. Use a source URL that Wowza can access, and verify that the file is available there before starting the stream. Wowza downloads the file after the live stream starts, so allow for startup delay rather than expecting playback to begin instantly.

Create the Wowza Video stream and set the source
- Create or open a live stream in Wowza Video. In the stream setup workflow, choose Stream from File as the source and provide the hosted file’s URL. The exact interface can change; Wowza’s legacy setup guide describes the setup page at Live Stream Setup page in Wowza Video.
- Configure a loop only if one file should repeat. In the advanced transcoder properties, enable Play source file on a loop. Wowza documents that looping overrides the idle timeout. The transcoder continues to incur charges until you manually stop the stream, so do not treat the timeout as an automatic shutdown for a loop.
- Start the stream and allow the source download to complete. Check the Wowza preview or stream status before proceeding. A delay while the file is fetched is expected; an inaccessible URL or unsupported source location can prevent the source from starting.
Add YouTube as the RTMP destination
In the Wowza live-stream details workflow, add an external-service target and select the RTMP destination option. Wowza’s live stream details documentation explains that an external target can send a stream to a service such as YouTube and directs users to the destination’s own documentation for its ingest details.
- In YouTube’s current live-stream setup, obtain the ingest URL and stream key for the broadcast and account you intend to use. Follow YouTube’s current instructions for account eligibility, scheduling, and key handling; those requirements can change and are not specified by Wowza’s target setup documentation.
- Enter the destination details in Wowza’s external RTMP target fields, matching the URL and key to the values YouTube currently displays. Treat the stream key as a password: do not publish it, share it, or include it in a recording.
- Start the Wowza source and confirm that the destination accepts the feed before the planned broadcast. Check both that the file is playing in Wowza and that YouTube reports the incoming stream as received. The exact YouTube status labels and account requirements should be checked in YouTube’s current help pages.
Check the broadcast before relying on it
- Source check: Confirm that the URL is accessible to Wowza and points to the intended MP4.
- Playback check: Wait for the file download and verify the Wowza preview before assuming the live feed has begun.
- Destination check: Confirm the external RTMP target is using the current YouTube ingest URL and corresponding stream key, and that YouTube receives the feed.
- Rights check: Make sure you have the necessary rights to every clip, soundtrack, and other element in the file. A technical ability to stream a file does not establish that it is cleared for YouTube live use. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules before broadcasting.
- Loop shutdown: If the source repeats, plan how and when an operator will stop the Wowza stream; the loop overrides idle timeout and charges continue until it is stopped.
Troubleshoot common failures
The source does not start
Check that the file URL is reachable and uses a supported source protocol—HTTP, HTTPS, GS, or S3—and that the file is still present and accessible. Allow time for Wowza to download it after stream start. If you combined many clips, reconsider whether the resulting file’s size or duration is practical; Wowza support warned in July 2025 that an oversized or lengthy combined file could make the workaround unusable.

Wowza is active but YouTube does not receive the feed
Verify the external RTMP target and copy the current ingest URL and matching stream key from YouTube’s live setup. Recheck account-specific live-stream eligibility and setup in YouTube’s current documentation. Wowza’s documentation establishes the external-target workflow, but not YouTube’s current account rules or ingest values.
The stream ends or the file does not repeat
If you expect a single file to loop, verify that Play source file on a loop is enabled in the advanced transcoder properties. If you want the stream to stop automatically, do not rely on idle timeout while looping: Wowza says the loop overrides it. Stop the transcoder manually when the broadcast should end.

You need separate files to play on a schedule
Do not assume that creating a file-based live stream makes it a multi-file playlist. Check with Wowza for current Wowza Video capabilities. The July 2025 support answer named Wowza Streaming Engine with StreamPublisher for playlist scheduling, but does not establish current configuration steps, availability, or cost.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Costs and operational trade-offs
Wowza’s file-streaming documentation warns that looping overrides idle timeout and that the transcoder continues to accrue charges until stopped. Check your current Wowza plan and account terms for the applicable charges and limits; the documentation cited here does not establish current prices, regional availability, maximum file size, or maximum duration. A combined MP4 may simplify the source setup, but it trades a multi-file schedule for one potentially large download. A true scheduled playlist through Wowza Streaming Engine is a distinct deployment, not simply a setting in Wowza Video.
