AzuraCast can provide your station’s audio, but the documented workflow does not send video to YouTube by itself. Use AzuraCast as the audio source, pair its mount-point stream with a visual in a separate encoder, then send that encoded stream to YouTube Live using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio.
How the setup works
The path is AzuraCast audio → video-capable encoder → YouTube Live. AzuraCast uses Liquidsoap to assemble and transform station audio, while listener-facing mount points expose the broadcast in selected formats and bitrates. A separate encoder combines that audio with a still image, artwork, or live studio view and publishes the result to YouTube. Before you start
- An AzuraCast station with a working mount point and its listener URL.
- An encoder that can ingest that audio URL, add video or a visual scene, and stream to YouTube over RTMP or RTMPS. Confirm the chosen encoder supports your specific audio input; not every encoder’s compatibility with every radio stream is established here.
- A YouTube channel eligible to stream live and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Rights to transmit and archive the station’s audio and visual material on YouTube for the relevant territories.
Set up the AzuraCast audio source
- In AzuraCast, open the station and identify the mount point intended for this broadcast. Stations can have multiple mount points for different formats or bitrates, so select one the encoder can accept and the outgoing connection can sustain.
- Copy its listener URL and test that it is reachable from the computer or server running the encoder. The documented default pattern is
{HTTP/HTTPS}://{BASE_URL}.TLD/listen/{STATION_URL_STUB}/{MOUNT_POINT_URL}; a custom mount URL can override it. See AzuraCast’s station and mount-point documentation. - If you are adding mount points, transcodes, or other outputs, check the AzuraCast server’s capacity. Configure the encoder and YouTube Live
- Choose a video-capable encoder that accepts the tested AzuraCast audio source. Make a scene with station artwork or another visual, or use a live studio camera if that is part of your production. This is an audio-to-video relay, not an AzuraCast camera broadcast.
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a stream. Copy the displayed Stream URL and Stream key into the encoder’s server and key fields. Prefer RTMPS where available. Treat the stream key like a password; if it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder. YouTube’s encoder guidance
- Set the encoder to a video codec YouTube documents—H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1—and an audio codec of AAC or MP3. Use constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, its recommended sample rate is 44.1 kHz and bitrate is 128 kbps. Video bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult YouTube’s current encoder settings table for the exact output mode you choose rather than applying one number to every stream. - Start the encoder and wait for the incoming stream preview in Live Control Room. Check the audio, visual, and stream-health indicators using representative material before going live. For a scheduled stream, click Go live in Live Control Room after the preview appears.
- To finish, end the stream in YouTube Studio, then stop the encoder. Confirm the broadcast has ended in the Live Control Room.
If the source is an over-the-air FM signal
AzuraCast’s mount-point method applies when the station audio is already available as a digital feed. If you mean a terrestrial FM broadcast received on a tuner, that is a different source path: receive the signal, capture its audio into an input the encoder can use, pair it with a visual, and send it to YouTube. The AzuraCast mount URL is not a way to receive over-the-air FM. The specific receiver, capture hardware, and encoder configuration depend on your equipment; a purchase is not established as necessary for the digital-feed method.
Clear the rights before you go live
Do not assume that permission to receive or broadcast an FM station automatically covers retransmission to YouTube or keeping an online archive. YouTube’s Live terms place responsibility on the provider for having the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of live content, including music licensing rights. The applicable permissions depend on the station, recordings, compositions, rights holders, territories, and existing agreements. Ask the broadcaster and relevant rights holders to verify whether this specific YouTube live use and any resulting archive are covered, including India-specific requirements; this is not a legal determination. YouTube scans live streams for third-party material and may interrupt or terminate a stream when it detects a match. Even content you have licensed can be interrupted unless the rights holder has allowlisted your channel in Content ID. Resolve this with the rights holder before transmitting rather than relying on a live test to establish permission. YouTube copyright help for live streams
Troubleshoot common failures
- The encoder cannot connect to the audio source: Recheck the mount-point URL, including the station stub and mount-point path; verify it is reachable from the encoder host and that the selected encoder accepts that stream format.
- YouTube receives no video or audio: Check that the encoder is running, its scene contains a video output, and its audio input is the intended mount point. Confirm the server URL and key in the encoder match the current values in Live Control Room.
- The preview is present but the broadcast has not started: Wait for YouTube’s preview and stream-health status. For a scheduled stream, use Go live in Live Control Room once the preview appears.
- The feed drops or becomes unstable: Test the mount point and encoder using representative content, and choose a video bitrate appropriate to the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate that the uplink can sustain. Check the YouTube stream-health indicators.
- The stream is interrupted over music: YouTube may have detected third-party content. Verify that your rights cover the live YouTube use and archive, and ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting where appropriate.
- AzuraCast uses unexpectedly high CPU: Review added mount points, transcodes, and destinations; each can add ongoing Liquidsoap workload. Check server capacity before expanding outputs.
