24/7 streaming

How to Run a 24/7 YouTube Stream with OBS and a Local Video Folder

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can loop prerecorded videos from a folder in OBS and send them to YouTube Live, but the loop alone does not make a stream reliably 24/7. Your computer, power, network, OBS, media files and YouTube ingest must all keep working. For a playlist, use OBS’s VLC Video Source with Loop Playlist enabled; then configure YouTube encoder output, test the full playback cycle and monitor the stream.

What you need before starting

  • A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned start. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and encoder setup guidance.
  • OBS Studio and video files stored in a stable local folder.
  • For a playlist in OBS, VLC installed on the same computer. If your OBS installation is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC to match it.
  • A reliable upload connection tested under conditions similar to the intended stream.

YouTube’s stream key is a credential that allows an encoder to send video to your channel. Treat it like a password: do not share it or show it in screenshots.

Build a looping source in OBS

For one video

  1. In OBS, add a Media Source to a scene.
  2. Select Local File, browse to the video and enable Loop.
  3. Check the video framing and audio in the OBS preview.

For a folder of videos

  1. Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video Source depends on it; use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
  2. In the scene’s Sources panel, add a VLC Video Source.
  3. Populate its playlist with the local video files you want to play. OBS documents formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM; see the OBS Media Sources guide.
  4. Enable Loop Playlist. The source’s Shuffle Playlist setting is off by default, so files ordinarily play in list order.
  5. Size or crop the source in the preview, check its audio level, and play every item through to the next file. Test transitions with your actual files: playlist looping does not promise gap-free changes for every codec and file combination.

Keep the files in place and do not rename them while relying on the playlist. This is practical file-management advice, not an OBS uptime guarantee. For more on adding and arranging sources, see the OBS Sources Guide.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or manage an encoder stream. Copy the server/configuration details and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Keep the key private.
  2. Choose the YouTube encoder ingest option and use RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which secures the connection to YouTube. Its setup steps are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  3. In OBS output settings, select a supported encoder and configure bitrate, rate control and keyframe interval to match YouTube’s current guidance for your codec, resolution and frame rate.
  4. Set rate control to CBR and the keyframe interval to 2 seconds; YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. Supported RTMP/RTMPS codecs include H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, subject to encoder and system support.
  5. Set resolution and frame rate to what the source and connection can sustain. Do not choose a bitrate just because a number appears in a table: test the upload connection and stream under realistic motion and audio conditions.

YouTube’s published recommendations vary by codec, resolution and frame rate. As examples from its H.264 table, it recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. For AV1 or H.265/HEVC, the listed recommendations are 10 Mbps at 1080p30 and 12 Mbps at 1080p60. These are recommendations, not guarantees of stable delivery; consult YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for the setting that matches your stream.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Test the playlist and launch

  1. Run the playlist long enough to see it reach the end and loop back to the start. Listen for missing audio and watch for files that fail to load or change unexpectedly.
  2. Check the Live Control Room preview before relying on the stream. Open the viewer page on another device or browser and confirm that playback, picture and sound are correct.
  3. Test upload speed and stream with motion and audio similar to the intended content. Monitor OBS and YouTube’s stream health after launch rather than assuming that a successful start means it will remain stable.
  4. For a scheduled event, YouTube recommends setting up the encoder stream at least two hours before the event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes beforehand. Use these as rehearsal timings for a scheduled start, not as a special requirement for every 24/7 channel.

YouTube’s encoder tips also advise checking that a local archive is growing, confirming channel and watch-page access (including mobile), and monitoring audio and video quality. See YouTube live-streaming tips. The cited guidance does not state a guaranteed maximum continuous runtime for OBS or YouTube.

What a local playlist can—and cannot—keep running

Loop Playlist handles repeated media playback. It does not restart a crashed computer, restore a lost internet connection, repair a YouTube ingest interruption or guarantee that an archive is retained. A local setup depends on the computer, its power and network, OBS, the source files and YouTube ingest all remaining functional.

  • Keep the computer awake and prevent routine sleep or shutdown while streaming.
  • Where practical, use a stable wired connection and preserve the source files in their expected location.
  • Monitor OBS and YouTube stream health, and decide in advance who will respond if playback or ingest stops.
  • For a production that cannot tolerate interruptions, plan for failure and review YouTube’s encoder documentation for backup-ingest concepts. A playlist loop does not configure a backup encoder or automatic failover.

The available documentation does not establish a required computer specification, a specific UPS requirement or an automatic failover design for this setup. A local loop is a playback method, not a service-level uptime guarantee.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
VLC Video Source is unavailable or playlist items do not play VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. Install VLC; if OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC. Reopen OBS and test the source.
Playlist stops after the final file Loop Playlist is not enabled. Open the VLC Video Source properties and enable Loop Playlist, then test through the end of the list.
Videos play in an unexpected order Shuffle Playlist may be enabled, or the playlist order differs from what you expect. Check the playlist and leave Shuffle Playlist off for list-order playback.
YouTube does not receive the stream Live streaming may not yet be enabled, stream details may be incorrect, or the key may be wrong. Confirm channel eligibility and activation, then verify OBS’s ingest configuration and key in YouTube Studio. Keep the key private.
Stream health is unstable Upload capacity, bitrate, encoder load or the local network may not sustain the chosen settings. Test the connection, use YouTube’s settings for the selected codec and output format, and monitor the Live Control Room. A recommended bitrate alone does not ensure stability.
Picture or sound fails at a file change The files may behave differently at transitions; seamless playback is not guaranteed for every file and codec combination. Test each item and transitions in the actual playlist, inspect audio and framing, and replace or adjust files that fail in testing.
Stream stops when unattended The computer, power, network, OBS or YouTube ingest stopped functioning. Check the machine’s sleep and power behavior, connection, OBS state and YouTube stream health; establish an operator recovery plan.
