1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShort answer: OBS is the more natural choice for a show that needs scenes, graphics, live inputs, or an operator at the controls. FFmpeg is often the more direct tool for sending a repeatable playlist of compatible prerecorded files, but it does not schedule a YouTube event or supervise itself. In either case, YouTube Studio (or the Live Streaming API) manages the broadcast, while OBS or FFmpeg sends the audio and video.
Scheduling and streaming are separate jobs
A scheduled YouTube broadcast and the encoder transmission that feeds it are related, but they are not the same thing. YouTube’s encoder instructions have you schedule the stream in Live Control Room when needed, then connect an encoder with the stream URL and key. A scheduled event can be promoted so viewers can set reminders. Starting an encoder sends content; stopping it ends the transmission. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.
The same distinction appears in the YouTube Live Streaming API: a liveBroadcast represents the event, while a liveStream represents the audio-video feed and its streaming settings. A channel can reuse stream settings across scheduled events or create distinct stream resources. A media command alone does not create or manage the event.
OBS vs. FFmpeg: which fits your playlist?
| Need | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Scenes, overlays, camera or desktop sources, microphone control, or operator changes | OBS | It provides a graphical production and encoding environment for assembling a show interactively. |
| Repeatable playback of a playlist of compatible prerecorded files | FFmpeg | Its concat demuxer can join compatible inputs without re-encoding; scripts can make the media sequence repeatable. |
| Automatic start at a chosen time, unattended recovery, or event creation | Neither by itself | You also need a scheduler or automation, reliable hosting, monitoring and recovery, plus the YouTube event setup. |
These are workflow recommendations based on documented capabilities, not a claim that either program automatically handles the complete unattended YouTube workflow. YouTube lists OBS among its verified encoder software; that establishes it as an encoder option, not as a complete playlist scheduler.

Use FFmpeg for a file-based playlist
FFmpeg is a good fit when the show is a sequence of recordings and the inputs are suitable for concatenation. The FFmpeg FAQ describes three approaches: the concat demuxer for compatible inputs that can be joined without re-encoding, the concat filter when re-encoding is needed, and other concat mechanisms for particular cases. Do not assume that arbitrary files will join cleanly or that stream-copy concatenation creates seamless transitions. Check codec, resolution, frame rate, audio layout, and timestamps before choosing a copy-based path. See the FFmpeg FAQ on concatenating media.
Prepare and validate the playlist
- Check every source file. Confirm that the media streams have compatible characteristics and that timestamps are usable. If the files differ in ways that prevent stream-copy concatenation, plan to normalize them with a filter and re-encode rather than expecting the concat demuxer to fix them.
- Choose the concat method. Use the concat demuxer when inputs are compatible and you want to avoid re-encoding. Use the concat filter when the inputs need transformation or more flexible handling. Consult FFmpeg’s current concat guidance for the input format and method you intend to use.
- Test the complete output before scheduling it. Check the beginning, file boundaries, audio, and the end of the sequence. A valid command does not establish that a playlist will behave as an uninterrupted live show.
FFmpeg supports real-time input processing and output formats that can feed a streaming endpoint; its formats documentation covers its muxers and related options. The exact command depends on the source files, desired output, and YouTube ingest settings, so there is no single safe copy-and-paste playlist command for every set of media.

Schedule the process and protect the stream key
To run unattended, arrange for a separate scheduler or service manager to start the tested FFmpeg process at the intended time. Keep the host available and its network stable; capture logs, monitor whether the process and transmission are still running, and define how to respond to errors or reconnects. Protect the YouTube stream key as a credential: do not publish it in a script, log, screenshot, or shared command. FFmpeg can send media, but its ability to do so does not provide process supervision or YouTube event management.
Use OBS when the playlist is part of a produced show
Choose OBS when a person needs to combine recordings with scenes, graphics, microphones, cameras, desktop sources, or live operator decisions. YouTube documents OBS as a verified encoder option, including for HLS output. However, the reviewed YouTube and OBS-related documentation does not establish a robust native unattended playlist scheduler; check the current OBS documentation for your version and test the exact arrangement rather than assuming that a scheduled YouTube event will start and stop automatically.

- Schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Set up the event in Live Control Room and use the stream URL and key associated with it, following YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Build and inspect the OBS scene collection. Add the media and any required production sources, then verify the intended order, audio, transitions, and overlays before the broadcast.
- Decide who starts and watches the encoder. For a person-operated show, start OBS when the event is ready and monitor its connection. For unattended operation, arrange and test a separate start mechanism, host availability, logging, and recovery plan.
- Test the event’s start and end behavior. The cited YouTube instructions do not guarantee that launching OBS automatically makes every scheduled event live or that disconnecting ends it in the way you expect. Verify the current event settings and rehearse the workflow.
Do not confuse HLS playlists with playlists of videos
YouTube’s HLS ingestion requirements concern the transport segments sent to YouTube, not a local playlist of source recordings. If you specifically send an HLS stream, YouTube requires MPEG-TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, does not support byte ranges, limits the playlist to no more than five outstanding segments, and requires HTTPS POST or PUT uploads. YouTube also notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. These constraints are described in its HLS setup instructions; do not apply them as rules for how to arrange your source videos.

- Are the inputs prerecorded files, live camera or desktop sources, or a mixture?
- Do you need scenes, overlays, or interactive audio control?
- Are the playlist files compatible for stream-copy concatenation, or will they need filtering and re-encoding?
- Who creates and starts each YouTube broadcast: a person, a script using the API, or another workflow?
- What starts the encoder at the scheduled time, and what detects a stalled process, lost connection, or failed output?
- Where will it run? An unattended process needs an available, reliable host and network connection.
For API-driven setups, YouTube’s broadcast and stream model is the relevant distinction: event lifecycle and media transmission require separate handling. For either encoder, confirm the current Studio settings and test the intended start, reconnect, and end behavior before relying on it unattended.

- The encoder connects, but the scheduled event does not behave as expected. Check the event and stream settings in YouTube Studio, confirm the correct stream URL and key, and test whether the event must be started or ended separately. The cited instructions do not promise universal auto-start or auto-stop behavior.
- FFmpeg fails at a file boundary or the output has missing or distorted media. Recheck codec, resolution, frame rate, audio layout, and timestamps across the inputs. If they are not compatible for stream copy, use an appropriate filter and re-encode.
- The playlist stops when nobody is watching the computer. The encoder process may have stopped, the host may have slept or lost connectivity, or no supervisor may be restarting it. Use an always-available host, retain logs, and monitor the process and stream.
- An HLS output is rejected or delayed. Verify the HLS-specific segment, playlist, upload, and latency requirements in YouTube’s HLS documentation. They apply to HLS ingestion, not to local media-list formatting.
