First determine what is restarting: the YouTube broadcast may be going offline and coming back, or the broadcast may stay live while the same prerecorded clip starts over. Those are different problems. A broadcast restart points you toward YouTube’s connection and event settings; a clip replay usually points to the playlist or playout system feeding the encoder.
Identify what is restarting
Watch the stream status while the problem occurs, not just the video. YouTube distinguishes the live broadcast (the event or watch page) from the incoming stream (the audio and video feed). Its Live API even describes a 24/7 live feed that can exist alongside a separate broadcast.
- The broadcast ends or the watch page goes offline, then returns: investigate the encoder connection, stream key, server URL, and YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings.
- The live indicator remains, but the same clip begins again: inspect the playlist, repeat setting, or playout behavior in the software or hosted service sending video to the encoder.
- Only a viewer’s playback position changes: check DVR behavior. YouTube says DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and continue from where they paused; that is not the same as the encoder or broadcast restarting.
There is no universal YouTube “stop looping” control documented for every third-party playout tool. If the live broadcast stays up and only the clip repeats, the relevant repeat control is likely in the player, playlist, or service that supplies the video.
If the broadcast goes offline and starts again
1. Check the incoming encoder connection
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and inspect the stream status around the time of the interruption. Confirm that your encoder is using the intended Live server URL and the current stream key. YouTube Help says, “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” Treat the key like a password: YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep it private, and update the encoder if you reset the key.

If the encoder reports that it cannot start, copy the current key from Live Control Room and replace the saved key in the encoder. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the key and updating the encoder. If your streaming software connects through account login instead of a stream key, YouTube directs you to that software’s support for further help.
2. Review auto-start and auto-stop
In the stream’s settings in Live Control Room, check whether auto-start and auto-stop are enabled. YouTube’s settings documentation says these options let creators start or stop streaming from the encoder. Its Live API lifecycle guide explains that with auto-start enabled, YouTube starts a broadcast when video begins arriving on its bound stream; with auto-stop enabled, the broadcast ends about a minute after video transmission stops.

These settings affect how YouTube responds to an encoder feed starting or stopping, but they are not proof of the cause. If the encoder feed is dropping, investigate its connection and logs as well as the YouTube settings. Reusing stream settings can carry auto-start and auto-stop selections forward, so check the active event rather than assuming it inherited the intended configuration.
3. Check your encoder’s own status and recovery behavior
YouTube supports both software apps and standalone hardware encoders. Choose based on the input you need and whether you can monitor the device or application unattended. Before relying on any encoder for a continuous stream, check whether it reports disconnects, preserves useful logs, and can resume the intended feed after an interruption. YouTube’s documentation identifies these encoder categories but does not rank them or establish that either category reconnects better.

If the broadcast stays live but the clip repeats
Open the playlist or playout settings in the system that is supplying prerecorded video. Look for repeat, loop, playlist-end behavior, or a scheduled restart rule. If you use a hosted playout service, check its own status and playback controls; YouTube’s encoder setup guidance covers receiving a feed, not the repeat behavior of every third-party player.
Make sure the playlist contains the intended items and order, and distinguish a normal transition from an unexpected reset. If the same item starts over at the end of the playlist, looping may be intentional. If it restarts mid-video, check for a scheduled restart, feed interruption, or player error in the playout system’s logs. The exact controls vary by provider, so use that provider’s documentation rather than changing YouTube’s stream key or event settings to fix a content-level loop.

Do not mistake archiving for a forced restart
YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archiving rule, not evidence that every broadcast is forced to restart when it reaches 12 hours. The documentation does not establish that crossing that duration automatically restarts all streams. Diagnose an actual interruption from the broadcast and encoder status rather than inferring its cause from the archive threshold.
Keep a continuous stream resilient
- Record the time of each interruption and whether the watch page went offline or the clip alone restarted.
- Compare that time with the encoder’s connection status and the playout system’s playback history.
- Confirm that the active event uses the intended server URL, current stream key, and auto-start/auto-stop choices.
- Test the recovery path before leaving the stream unattended, and know how to restore the intended playlist or feed after an error.
- For 24/7 linear channels, restart intervals are service-specific advice, not a general YouTube requirement. For example, Livestream’s guidance for its own enterprise customers recommends periodic restarts and its Producer setting defaults to 24 hours; its recommendation of four hours applies to that service, not to YouTube as a platform.
