How to Prepare Video Files for a 24/7 YouTube Stream on a Low-End PC in India

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can prepare a 24/7 YouTube stream on a low-end PC by using OBS to loop a local video, choosing output settings the computer and your sustained upload can handle, and testing the complete setup before sharing the stream. For one file, use OBS’s Media Source with Loop enabled; for a playlist, use its VLC Video source. There is no verified minimum PC specification or India-wide upload-speed figure that guarantees success, so test your own files, machine, network, and power setup.

What to prepare before you stream

A continuous stream has two separate jobs: the playback source repeatedly plays your video, while OBS encodes and sends the resulting feed to YouTube. The local video does not need to be re-encoded during playback if it already runs smoothly in OBS. Your PC still has to stay powered on, connected, and capable of encoding for as long as you want the local stream to continue.

  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-stream restriction in the past 90 days; first-time livestream activation may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
  • OBS installed on a PC that can play the chosen file and sustain the selected output settings.
  • One or more local video files, plus audio that you have the rights to use in a livestream.
  • A measured, stable upload connection with enough headroom for the stream bitrate.
  • Your YouTube stream key, handled like a password.

OBS’s documented media formats include MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, but a container extension alone does not guarantee that the codecs inside a file will play on your particular computer. Test each file in OBS before relying on it. OBS’s media-source and hardware-encoding documentation dates from 2022, so labels or details may differ in newer versions: Media Sources and Hardware Encoding.

Set up the YouTube stream and protect the key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the livestream.
  2. Copy the stream key from the stream settings into OBS’s stream configuration. YouTube’s Manage live stream settings page explains stream URL and key behavior; the exact OBS menu location can vary by version.
  3. Do not publish or share the key. Anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings and update OBS.
  4. Before the public launch, confirm the correct stream is selected in Live Control Room and that OBS is sending to it.

Loop one video or a playlist in OBS

One local video: Media Source

  1. In OBS, create or select a scene.
  2. In the Sources panel, choose + and add Media Source.
  3. Select the local video file and enable Loop.
  4. Check that the image and sound play continuously in the OBS preview. If the file stutters or fails to open, try a compatible copy prepared in advance rather than asking a weak PC to transcode it live.

Several videos: VLC Video

  1. Install VLC in the version matching your OBS architecture.
  2. In OBS, add a VLC Video source and add the files to its playlist.
  3. Enable Loop Playlist and preview the sequence, including the transition from the last item back to the first.
  4. Listen for unexpected silence, abrupt volume changes, or gaps between files.

Media Source is the simpler choice for a single file; VLC Video is useful when you need a playlist and are willing to install VLC. Neither choice removes the need to verify that the actual files decode correctly on the PC.

Choose output settings the PC can sustain

Start conservatively, then test. OBS says encoding load depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; its system requirements do not guarantee that a particular computer can stream successfully. Its system requirements page is dated 2021, so treat it as compatibility context, not a performance promise for your setup.

  1. Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point. It considers system resources and network conditions, but it cannot replace a real test with the files and connection you will use.
  2. Use a simple scene without unnecessary effects or overlays. Scene complexity is one factor OBS identifies as affecting CPU demand.
  3. Try 30 fps before 60 fps on a weak PC. This is a practical starting suggestion, not a YouTube minimum; higher frame rates can increase the work the PC must do.
  4. For RTMP/RTMPS ingest, YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, recommends CBR, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. Check the encoder options available in your installed OBS version.
  5. For H.264, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are recommendations, not mandatory minimums. If the PC or upload connection cannot sustain them, test a lower resolution or bitrate rather than assuming 1080p is necessary.
  6. If OBS offers a compatible hardware encoder, test it. OBS says hardware encoding can shift work away from the CPU, but older hardware encoders may produce lower image quality at the same bitrate. A successful test on your own PC matters more than the encoder label.

Use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance as an ingest reference; available choices and performance still depend on your equipment.

Measure upload speed and leave headroom

Choose bitrate based on sustained upload capacity, not the download speed advertised by a provider. YouTube recommends about 20% more available upload bandwidth than the total outgoing stream bitrate and warns that other users or devices sharing the connection can reduce what is available. Its streaming tips give this guidance; the page does not establish one required speed for every creator in India.

  1. Test upload performance at the location and time the PC will stream.
  2. Compare the sustained upload result with the bitrate selected in OBS, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
  3. Repeat the test while other people or devices use the connection as they normally would.
  4. If the connection fluctuates or drops packets over Wi-Fi, test Ethernet as a possible remedy. A cable is not a universal requirement and does not fix every network problem.

These are general YouTube recommendations, not India-specific ISP, tariff, or network-quality statistics. For a local-PC stream, also account for the PC’s actual power draw and possible outages; the cited guidance does not establish a UPS size or guarantee uninterrupted operation.

Test before treating it as a 24/7 stream

  1. Start a test stream and preview it in YouTube Live Control Room before broadly sharing it.
  2. Check the video and audio on OBS, in Live Control Room, and on a mobile device. Look for freezes, missing sound, clipping, silence between playlist items, and unexpected transitions.
  3. Inspect YouTube’s stream-health indicators and OBS while the stream runs. A short successful test is useful, but it does not establish that the PC, power, and internet connection will remain stable indefinitely.
  4. If you record a local archive while testing, check that the file is growing rather than assuming a recording is being saved correctly.
  5. If you have configured a backup encoder, test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection, then verify that the player switches as intended. Do not perform a disruptive test on a stream your audience is relying on.

YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health and audio/video quality. See Streaming tips.

Troubleshoot common preparation problems

The file will not open or plays incorrectly

  • Likely cause: The container is supported but a codec inside the file is not compatible with the local playback setup, or the file itself is problematic.
  • Fix: Test it locally in the chosen OBS source. If needed, prepare a compatible lower-resolution copy ahead of time and test that copy. There is no single verified conversion preset for every low-end PC.

The video plays, but OBS drops frames or the PC struggles

  • Likely cause: The selected resolution, frame rate, encoder, or scene complexity exceeds what the computer can sustain.
  • Fix: Simplify the scene and test a lower output resolution or frame rate. Try a compatible hardware encoder only if one is available, and compare the result for both smoothness and image quality.

The stream buffers or loses connection

  • Likely cause: Available upload bandwidth is too close to the outgoing bitrate, varies over time, or is shared by other network users.
  • Fix: Recheck sustained upload speed under normal household or office use, lower the stream bitrate if necessary, and investigate Wi-Fi instability. Ethernet may help if wireless instability is the cause, but it cannot guarantee uptime.

The playlist has gaps or the audio is uneven

  • Likely cause: Individual files, transitions, or audio levels have not been checked as a complete sequence.
  • Fix: Preview the full playlist in OBS, including its loop point, and adjust files or levels before the public stream.

The stream key no longer works or may be exposed

  • Likely cause: The key was copied incorrectly, the wrong stream is selected, or the key was compromised or reset.
  • Fix: Verify the stream settings in YouTube Live Control Room and update OBS with the current key. Reset an exposed key rather than continuing to use it.

Copyright and YouTube policy still apply to prerecorded video

A file looping continuously is still content streamed publicly on YouTube. Use video, music, and other material you own or are licensed to use, and check YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies before relying on a stream. Repetition alone does not establish that content is permitted or monetizable; do not assume that a playlist avoids rights or reused-content concerns. Review YouTube’s current rules directly because this setup guidance does not determine whether a particular channel or video qualifies.
