Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To reset a YouTube stream key, open YouTube Studio → Create → Go Live → Stream, select Reset beside the hidden key, then replace the old key in your encoder, such as OBS. You can keep your encoder profile and workflow; the key is a credential, not your scenes or other encoder settings. Rotate it before a broadcast if continuity matters: YouTube does not specify whether resetting interrupts an active stream or exactly when the old key stops working.
What resetting a stream key changes
YouTube Help describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” The encoder uses the key, along with YouTube’s server URL, to send the video feed to the right stream. Resetting generates a new key for the current stream settings; you then need to update the key stored in your encoder. YouTube’s stream setup guide does not instruct you to rebuild encoder scenes or profiles.
Keep the claim narrow: YouTube does not document whether a stream already in progress continues ingesting after a reset, whether resetting causes a temporary interruption, or how quickly the old key is revoked. If an interruption would matter, rotate the key before going live rather than relying on an active broadcast to continue.
Reset the key and update your encoder
- Sign in with the right channel permissions. The channel owner or a manager must reset the key. Editors and viewers do not have permission.
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- Open the stream settings. Select Stream on the left and find Stream key.
- Reset the key. Select Reset beside the hidden key. YouTube generates a new key for the current stream settings.
- Replace the saved key in your encoder. Copy the new value and update the stream key in the encoder’s YouTube connection settings. Keep the YouTube Live server URL set as required by your encoder.
- Check the selected stream before sending video. Confirm that the encoder is using the intended stream and the newly generated key, then start the feed when you are ready.
Do not share the new key publicly or include it in a screenshot. Anyone with access to a stream key may be able to send a feed to the associated stream; treat it as a credential.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Will you lose OBS scenes or other encoder settings?
A key reset is a credential change, not an instruction to rebuild your production setup. Update the stored key in your encoder and leave your scenes, sources, and other profile settings in place. YouTube’s reset instructions say to update the encoder with the new key; they do not describe deleting encoder-side configuration or guarantee every setting in every third-party encoder.
If your encoder uses a saved profile or service connection, edit the stream key in the connection you actually use. Avoid creating a fresh profile unless you need one for another workflow: that can make it harder to tell which key and settings are active.

Reset the current key or reuse a stream setup?
| Your goal | What to do | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Replace a key that may be exposed or compromised | Reset the current key in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the new value. | Confirm the encoder is using the new key for the intended stream. Creating a reusable key does not make a compromised existing key safe. |
| Keep a repeatable workflow for future broadcasts | Use YouTube’s Reuse settings when creating a stream, or use a custom reusable stream key where appropriate. | Check which stream and key are selected before starting. Reusing settings can carry forward prior metadata, settings, and key; review and edit the new stream details as needed. |
YouTube documents both custom keys and reuse of previous stream settings. These help preserve a routine connection, but they serve a different purpose from rotating a credential that should no longer be trusted.
If Reset is missing or the encoder will not connect
- You cannot see or use Reset: Check that you are signed into the correct channel as its owner or manager. Editors and viewers cannot reset the key.
- The encoder still fails to connect after the reset: Confirm that you replaced the old key in the active encoder profile, selected the intended stream, and retained the correct YouTube Live server URL. Check for leading or trailing spaces if you pasted the key.
- You are using a webcam stream: YouTube’s key-reset instructions apply to encoder or mobile streams, not webcam streams. A webcam workflow does not use the encoder key described here.
- You cannot start any live stream: YouTube says channels must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions within the previous 90 days. See its live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- You need uninterrupted coverage: Because YouTube does not state the effect of resetting during an active broadcast, schedule the rotation before going live and test the replacement connection before an important stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video without a computer, OBS, or home internet connection staying on. The stream is YouTube-only and does not go live from a camera.
