If 10 Mbps is your stable upload speed, 720p is the safer default for a YouTube livestream. YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrate for 1080p exceeds that connection’s practical stream budget. H.264 1080p30 at the listed minimum bitrate may work, but it is a compromise to test—not YouTube’s recommended setting. If 10 Mbps is your download speed, test your upload speed before choosing.
First, check what “10 Mbps” means
A 10 Mbps download result does not tell you how much bandwidth your stream can send. Upload speed is the relevant measurement, and it can be lower than download speed. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and leaving 20% of available upload bandwidth unused for headroom. Its guidance says, “The total bitrate that you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available,” and, “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).”
If repeated tests show a steady 10 Mbps upload, applying that 20% guidance gives an approximate total stream budget of 8 Mbps. That is a planning calculation, not a separate YouTube guarantee. The budget needs to cover the stream’s total bitrate, including audio, and leave room for fluctuations or other network use.
YouTube also notes that shared networks can limit the bandwidth available to an individual device. A speed test taken while the connection is otherwise idle may not reflect conditions during a stream.

720p vs. 1080p: YouTube’s live bitrate guidance
The table below reproduces YouTube Help’s current live encoder recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026. These are live-ingestion settings, not a guarantee of how every viewer’s playback will look. Minimum and recommended rates are distinct: a listed minimum is not the recommended target.
| Resolution and frame rate | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
Use the row for your actual codec and frame rate. Do not apply these live-stream figures to an uploaded video file: YouTube publishes separate guidance for video uploads.

Which resolution should you choose?
Choose 720p when continuity matters most
For H.264, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps of video bitrate at both 720p30 and 720p60. That recommendation sits close to the approximate 8 Mbps total stream budget from a stable 10 Mbps upload, before accounting for audio or network variation. In practice, choose a bitrate your connection can sustain, and judge it by testing and stream health rather than assuming the nominal speed is constant. 720p gives you more room to manage the trade-off than recommended H.264 1080p.
Consider 1080p30 only as a tested compromise
YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the H.264 minimum for 1080p30, but recommends 14 Mbps. The minimum may fit within the approximate budget on paper, but it is below the recommended target and leaves less margin for audio and upload fluctuations. If you need 1080p, test 1080p30 at the intended bitrate with your actual audio and content before relying on it live. Move down to 720p if stream health becomes unstable.

Avoid assuming 1080p60 will fit comfortably
H.264 1080p60 has a listed minimum of 6 Mbps and a recommended bitrate of 17 Mbps. On a 10 Mbps upload, even the minimum consumes much of the approximate total budget, while the recommended rate is well beyond it. If smoother motion is more important than pixel detail, 720p60 is the more practical option to test; use 1080p30 only if a real test is stable.
Use AV1 or H.265 figures only if that is your encoder codec
The recommended AV1/H.265 rates are lower than the H.264 recommendations, but 1080p still does not fit the suggested headroom on a 10 Mbps upload: the recommendations are 10 Mbps at 30 fps and 12 Mbps at 60 fps, before audio. Use the matching codec row rather than choosing a bitrate from another codec’s figures.

How to test before going live
- Measure upload capacity. Run a speed test, preferably more than once and under conditions similar to the planned stream. YouTube Help says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.”
- Choose the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate. Look up the matching row in YouTube’s live encoder guidance and distinguish the minimum from the recommended bitrate.
- Test with representative content. YouTube advises, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Include audio and movement comparable to the event; a static test image may not represent a high-motion stream.
- Check stream health while live. Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages. If the connection is unstable, reduce bitrate or step down from 1080p to 720p, then reassess rather than treating one good speed test as proof of sustained capacity.
Resolution is separate from latency. YouTube defines stream latency as the delay between capture by the encoder or camera and display on the stream; lower latency can mean more playback buffering. Choose latency for the interaction you need, not as a fix for insufficient upload bandwidth.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running 24/7, StreamNeo is a different workflow from a live camera encoder: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. For a live event from a camera, use an encoder and a connection that can sustain its bitrate instead.
