One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf you already have a gaming PC, the simplest free way to run a 24/7 YouTube gaming stream is OBS Studio on that PC. OBS is free and open source, and YouTube describes encoder streaming as a common way to broadcast gaming. The trade-off is that your PC, power and internet connection must remain available; this is a practical low-cost setup, not a guarantee of uninterrupted uptime.
What “24/7” means on YouTube
A channel staying live around the clock and YouTube saving a complete replay are different outcomes. YouTube says a stream shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a longer broadcast may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for streams exceeding 12 hours. If you need a replay, plan shorter broadcast sessions and make a local recording as a backup. YouTube’s archive guidance states: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” See also YouTube’s DVR guidance.
Check eligibility and prepare your channel
- Verify the channel and confirm it has no live-streaming restriction from the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s current guidance says livestreamers must be at least 16 years old. Review YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- Enable live streaming on the channel if you have not used it before, and allow for any activation time YouTube requires. Check Live Control Room before planning a continuous broadcast.
- Decide what should appear on screen while you are away. Make sure the game, scene and any overlays will not expose private information or show material you do not have rights to broadcast.
Set up OBS and connect it to YouTube
- Install OBS Studio. Download it from the official OBS Project Help Portal; OBS describes the software as free and open source. Avoid third-party download mirrors.
- Create an encoder stream in YouTube. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select a stream using an encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes this workflow.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. Enter them in OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a broadcast to your channel. Do not show it on stream, share it publicly or include it in a recording. Regenerate it in YouTube if it is exposed.
- Choose RTMPS when available. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingest. In OBS, use the server and connection details supplied for the selected YouTube stream rather than guessing a server address. Refer to YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
- Set up your game scene. Add a game capture source and any overlays you actually need. Check the preview for black capture, cropped content, unreadable overlays or private desktop windows before broadcasting.
- Choose settings your PC and upload connection can sustain. Use YouTube’s encoder guidance for supported resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe settings. There is no single bitrate or resolution established as ideal for every PC, game and connection. A stable stream is more useful than settings that overload the encoder or saturate your upload.
- Start and verify the broadcast. Start streaming in OBS, inspect the preview and stream health in Live Control Room, and complete YouTube’s Go Live action if prompted. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend monitoring audio and video quality.
- Record locally if the replay matters. Enable OBS recording and confirm the file is being created. YouTube also recommends checking that the local archive file continues to grow during a stream; keep sufficient storage free for the intended recording length.
Make a local setup practical for continuous play
OBS can send gameplay while you play, but a 24/7 channel needs more than a working scene. The game, encoder, computer, power and internet connection all need to keep working. Decide who will monitor the stream, what to do if the game hangs, and how to restart after a power or network outage. The available guidance does not establish automatic recovery for a local OBS setup, so do not assume it will recover unattended.
- Test a private or unlisted broadcast first and watch it from another device.
- Check that game audio, microphone levels if used, and overlays remain correct over time.
- Keep the PC ventilated and prevent sleep or automatic shutdown from interrupting the broadcast.
- Have a plan to restart OBS and the game after a crash, and protect the stream key.
- Use shorter YouTube sessions and local recording if preserving replays is important, given the archive and DVR limits for broadcasts longer than 12 hours.
Other ways to keep a YouTube stream running
For the requested free route, OBS on an existing gaming PC is the clearest fit. Other encoder paths depend on the selected device or software and may add costs; they are not all designed for continuous gameplay. A cloud-hosted encoder or gaming setup could avoid leaving a home PC on, but a free option suitable for 24/7 gaming, its gaming capability, uptime terms and stream limits are not established here.

| Option | Software cost | What must stay running | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OBS on an existing gaming PC | Free software | Gaming PC, encoder and internet | Creators who already play on a PC | Depends on local hardware, power and connectivity |
| YouTube’s built-in or another encoder path | YouTube service is used; encoder costs vary | The selected device and connection | Simpler or alternative workflows | Not every path suits continuous gameplay; paid encoders may add cost |
| Cloud-hosted encoder or gaming setup | Free availability not established | Provider infrastructure and a way to supply game video | Creators who need the home PC off | Check current pricing, gaming capability, uptime terms and stream limits before relying on it |
Troubleshoot common 24/7 stream problems
- You cannot start streaming: Check channel verification, live-streaming eligibility and whether YouTube reports a restriction. Confirm that the encoder is using the current server URL and stream key for the selected stream.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder: Confirm the correct stream is selected in Live Control Room, the stream key was copied accurately, and the PC has internet access. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
- The stream is unstable or quality drops: Check YouTube’s stream-health feedback and reduce settings to ones the computer can encode and the connection can upload reliably. Consult YouTube’s bitrate, resolution and encoder settings guidance rather than applying a universal number.
- The game appears black or the wrong content is visible: Inspect the OBS preview and game capture source, then verify the scene before going live. Close private windows and remove overlays that should not be broadcast.
- The broadcast stops after a crash or outage: A local setup depends on the PC and connection. Restart the game and OBS, reconnect with the correct stream key, and check Live Control Room before resuming. A recovery process should be part of the operating plan; uninterrupted recovery is not guaranteed.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: YouTube may not capture streams longer than 12 hours, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable. Make a local recording and use shorter broadcast sessions when a YouTube archive is important.
Or let it run in the cloud
If keeping a gaming PC on is the obstacle, StreamNeo is a separate YouTube service for looping uploaded videos—not a way to stream live gameplay from a camera or game session. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month.
