To show the current cartoon title in an OBS stream, play your files in an OBS VLC Video Source, use the Tuna plugin to write the selected item’s title to a text file, and display that file with an OBS Text Source. The key limitation is that the title depends on the media metadata Tuna can read; OBS cannot identify an episode from its picture alone.
What you need and what the setup does
You need OBS Studio, VLC, the Tuna plugin, a cartoon playlist, and a text file for Tuna’s output. VLC plays and loops the playlist. Tuna reads information from the selected VLC source and formats the title into a file. An OBS Text Source reads that file and places the title over the video.
Install a VLC build whose 32-bit or 64-bit architecture matches OBS. OBS’s VLC Video Source requires VLC; if VLC Video Source does not appear in the Sources add menu, check that VLC is installed and that the two applications’ architectures match. Consult the documentation for your installed OBS build, since the OBS source articles referenced here date from 2022.
Set up the playlist and title overlay
- Add the cartoon playlist. In OBS, use the Sources add menu to add a VLC Video Source. Load the cartoon files into its playlist. Enable Loop Playlist to restart the source when it reaches the end; enable shuffle only if you want items played in a randomized order.
- Configure Tuna for that VLC source. Install Tuna using its project’s current instructions. In Tuna’s VLC settings, select the OBS scene and the VLC source containing the cartoons. Tuna documents support for OBS VLC sources and configurable title output.
- Choose the file output and title format. Set Tuna to write its output to a text file, then select the title field or a suitable formatting string for the label you want. Available fields depend on the information supplied by the source and the media files.
- Display the output in OBS. Add an OBS Text Source and enable its option to read text from a file. Select the file Tuna writes. In the scene’s source list, place the Text Source above the VLC Video Source so it appears over the cartoon.
- Position and test the label. Use the OBS preview to place and style the text. Play several files and watch transitions between playlist items. Confirm that the displayed title changes and is readable against the video before relying on it in a live broadcast.
Make sure the title data is dependable
Tuna can only display fields that its selected source provides. A file may have no useful embedded title, or its title may not match the episode name you want viewers to see. Check the media information for several files, not just the first one, and confirm Tuna is mapped to the VLC source that actually carries the playlist.

If metadata is absent or inconsistent, the workflow needs another reliable title source or mapping; neither OBS nor Tuna can infer a meaningful episode title just by looking at the video. The reviewed setup documentation does not establish a universal way to supply missing cartoon titles, so test your chosen method with the actual library and host.
When a Browser Source is a better fit
For a simple label, a file-backed Text Source is the more direct route. An OBS Browser Source can load a local HTML file or a URL and provides a customizable viewport, making it more suitable when you need custom typography, animation, or a more elaborate layout.

A Browser Source is a canvas, not a ready-made cartoon title widget. You still need a page or integration that receives the current title, such as a metadata-to-file or metadata-to-page setup. OBS documentation describes Browser Source capabilities but does not establish a turnkey title overlay for this workflow.
What the overlay does not guarantee
A looping VLC playlist and a working title overlay do not guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast, automatic recovery after a computer or connection failure, or permission to rebroadcast the cartoons. The cited OBS and Tuna instructions cover playback and overlay behavior, not broadcast failover, YouTube’s current continuous-live requirements, or content rights.

Before streaming, confirm that you have the rights needed to broadcast each cartoon and check YouTube’s current policies for live streams and copyrighted or reused material. Test playlist playback, title changes, and the stream on the actual machine and OBS build you intend to use; compatibility and behavior are not established for every operating system or distribution.
Common problems and fixes
- VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS, then restart OBS and check the Sources add menu again.
- The text is blank or does not change: Confirm Tuna is targeting the correct scene and VLC source, that its output file path matches the file selected by the Text Source, and that the selected title field is supplied for the current item.
- The title is wrong or generic: Inspect the file’s media metadata and test another playlist item. Missing or unhelpful embedded titles must be addressed with another reliable title mapping; the overlay cannot derive an episode name from the image.
- The title is hidden behind the video: Move the Text Source above the VLC Video Source in the OBS source order, then reposition it in the preview.
- Tuna does not work with this OBS installation: Follow Tuna’s current project instructions and validate the plugin on the specific OBS package and operating system you use. The reviewed documentation does not verify compatibility with every current build or Linux distribution.
- The playlist runs but the live stream stops: Playlist looping only restarts the VLC source at the end of its playlist. It does not establish automatic broadcast recovery or host failover.
