To connect an internet radio server to YouTube Live, route the station’s program audio into an encoder, add a video signal (a static visual can work), then send the encoder’s combined audio and video to YouTube with the live stream’s ingestion URL and stream key. YouTube documents the encoder-to-YouTube connection; the audio-capture step depends on how your particular radio server or playback system exposes its output.
What you need before you start
- An internet radio server or playback chain with an audio output the encoder can receive. The exact connection depends on the radio software, operating system and audio-routing method.
- An encoder that accepts that audio and also sends video. YouTube’s LiveStreams API identifies an incoming feed without video as a
noVideoStreamissue; a camera is not required, but the encoder must send a video component. YouTube LiveStreams API documentation. - A YouTube channel able to go live, plus a live stream’s ingestion URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
- A stable upload connection with enough capacity for the selected video bitrate and some overhead.
There is no universal command for capturing radio-server audio: first establish how your specific system makes its program feed available, then select an encoder that can accept that output.
Connect the radio audio and prepare the video
1. Identify the program audio output
Find the audio signal that represents what listeners hear from the station. Depending on the setup, it may be exposed directly by the radio software or come from a separate playback or audio-routing chain. Verify that this is the finished program mix, not a microphone input or an unrelated monitor feed. The connection method is specific to your server and operating system; YouTube’s ingestion documentation does not prescribe it.
2. Route that signal into an encoder
Choose an encoder that can receive the identified audio output and produce an audio-video stream. Confirm that its input meter responds when the radio program is playing. If it does not, troubleshoot the audio route before configuring YouTube; YouTube cannot receive audio the encoder never captures.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Add a video source
Add a suitable video source to the encoder. For a radio simulcast, that could be a static station image or other appropriate visual; it need not be a camera feed. Ensure the encoder actually sends video rather than only attaching an image in its local preview. YouTube’s stream health can flag a missing video stream.
Create or select a YouTube live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room.
- Create a live stream or select the stream configuration you intend to use. Retrieve its stream URL (ingestion address) and stream key/name from the stream settings.
- In the encoder, enter the URL and key in their respective fields. If the encoder has a single server/URL field, it may expect them combined as
STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME; follow that encoder’s field guidance. - Keep the key private. Use the key associated with the selected stream, and verify the URL and key together if YouTube reports no incoming data.
For API-managed systems, the primary ingestion address and stream name are available through cdn.ingestionInfo. A backup ingestion address is available when configured. YouTube’s API documentation distinguishes the stream carrying the feed from the broadcast representing the viewer-facing event: LiveStreams and LiveBroadcasts.

Set the encoder for YouTube
Choose an ingestion protocol
For an ordinary live encoder workflow, use RTMPS if the encoder supports it. RTMPS carries RTMP through TLS; YouTube’s documented connection uses port 443, the correct endpoint and URL path, and SNI with the server hostname. Use the exact address YouTube supplies rather than constructing an endpoint from memory. See YouTube encoder settings and Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
| Protocol | When it fits | Documented trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| RTMPS | General-purpose encoder ingestion, including workflows where low latency matters | Encrypted RTMP; correct endpoint, path, TLS on port 443 and SNI hostname are required. |
| HLS | Encoder workflows that specifically need HLS ingestion or its supported codec options | Encrypted and supports H.264 and HEVC; segment-based, so it is not suited to ultra-low latency. |
| DASH | Specialized encoder workflows needing its supported codec features | Encrypted; supports H.264 and VP9 and is generally higher-latency than RTMP because it is segment-based. |
For a basic radio simulcast, HLS or DASH usually adds complexity without a need established by the audio source itself. Use them only when your encoder or production requirements call for them. Protocol details: YouTube ingestion protocols.

Set video and audio parameters
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. Its recommendation is a two-second keyframe interval, and it says not to exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, its advanced settings recommend 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. These are YouTube recommendations, not measurements for your station or a promise that every encoder exposes identical controls. Check the current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance.
Select a resolution, frame rate and video bitrate supported by both the encoder and your upload connection. YouTube provides bitrate recommendations by resolution, frame rate and codec; use the matching row in its settings rather than applying a single bitrate to every configuration. YouTube recommends running an upload-speed test. It transcodes the ingested stream into multiple output formats for viewers, but that does not remove the need to send a stable, correctly configured feed.

Test the feed, then start the broadcast
- Start the encoder and play representative radio audio while the selected video is running.
- Check that the encoder meters show audio and that its status indicates an active connection.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming feed and review stream health and any configuration messages. Resolve warnings before starting the public broadcast.
- Test the same kind of audio and video movement expected during the actual program. YouTube Help specifically advises testing with audio and video similar to the real stream.
- When the feed is healthy, start the broadcast in Live Control Room if the workflow requires a separate start there. Monitor stream health and messages during transmission.
Run recurring programs or multiple channels
YouTube models the incoming feed as a stream and the viewer-facing event as a broadcast. A stream can be reused for recurring broadcasts, and the API guide describes using a 24/7 feed alongside a separate broadcast. In the documented single-encoder pattern, each YouTube channel needs its own stream. Plan the broadcast and stream objects separately if you automate recurring shows; an active encoder feed alone is not necessarily the same thing as a published viewer-facing event. See YouTube LiveBroadcasts API documentation.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | What to check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No data or inactive stream | The encoder may be pointed at a different stream’s ingestion URL, or the stream key/name may be missing or incorrect. | Re-select the intended stream in Live Control Room and copy its current URL and key into the encoder. Check that the encoder is actually running. |
| Connection or TLS error | RTMPS address or path, port, or SNI hostname does not match the required endpoint. | Use YouTube’s supplied RTMPS address; verify the URL path, TLS connection on port 443 and SNI server hostname. |
| No audio | The radio output may not reach the encoder, or the selected audio codec may be unsupported. | Confirm the program signal reaches the encoder’s input meter; for RTMP/RTMPS choose AAC or MP3. |
| No video | The encoder may be sending audio only, despite showing a local visual or preview. | Configure an actual video source and verify that video is included in the outgoing stream. |
| Buffering or poor stream health | Upload capacity, selected bitrate, sample rate or keyframe interval may be unsuitable. | Compare bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the chosen codec, resolution and frame rate; confirm the audio settings and two-second recommended keyframe interval (no more than four seconds); monitor YouTube’s health messages. |
For API-driven setups, YouTube reports stream status and health separately from the broadcast lifecycle. Use the status and health details to distinguish a feed that is not reaching YouTube from a broadcast that has not been started or configured as intended.
