How to Keep OBS Audio From Clipping in a Relaxation Live Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To keep OBS audio from clipping, lower the level at the first stage that overloads—usually the microphone, interface, mixer, operating-system input, or app—then set the OBS mixer level with headroom. Use a compressor only to manage uneven loudness and put a limiter last as a peak safety ceiling. Record and listen to a representative test before going live: an OBS limiter cannot repair distortion that has already happened upstream.

Why OBS audio clips—and why the order of fixes matters

Digital clipping occurs when a signal exceeds what a stage in the audio path can accurately reproduce. OBS’s audio guidance says stream and recording audio must remain below 0 dBFS to avoid clipping. If distortion starts in a microphone preamp or interface, turning down the OBS fader later only makes the distorted signal quieter; it does not restore the waveform. OBS’s practical advice is: “Always start at the device in question.” OBS Audio Mixer Guide · OBS Monitoring Guide

Trace the signal in order: source or microphone, interface or mixer, operating-system and application input levels, then the OBS mixer and filters. Listen as early in that chain as possible, then compare with OBS monitoring and a test recording. The point where the sound first becomes harsh, crackly, or flattened identifies where to lower gain.

Fix clipping from the source forward

  1. Listen before OBS. Monitor the microphone or interface directly if your equipment supports it. If the audio is already distorted there, lower the physical input gain or the relevant interface or mixer channel control. Consult the device manual if its gain controls or monitoring path are unclear.
  2. Check every intermediate level. Inspect the interface or mixer channel and master controls, the operating system’s recording level, and any application-specific input slider. An operating-system slider’s effect can vary by setup, so test rather than assuming it controls the same stage on every system.
  3. Set the OBS mixer level. Keep the OBS Audio Mixer visible while speaking and playing the loudest likely content. Lower the source fader if the signal arriving in OBS is simply too high and is not already distorted. The fader is a downstream level control, not a repair for upstream overload.
  4. Recheck after each change. Listen again at the stage you adjusted and in OBS. Changing one stage at a time makes it easier to identify where distortion begins and prevents unnecessarily quiet audio.

OBS documents the Audio Mixer, monitoring, and level-adjustment guidance in its Audio Mixer Guide and Monitoring Guide.

Read OBS’s meter during the loudest moments

The OBS mixer uses a moving peak program meter. Its peak-hold marker remembers the highest level from the preceding 20 seconds, so you can speak a loud phrase or trigger an alert, then check whether the signal briefly went higher than the moving bar suggests. OBS describes green, yellow, and red as level cues: speech may reach the lower end of red, while background music and sound effects should stay in green. Do not judge a relaxation mix from its quiet ambience alone; check speech, transitions, and alerts too. OBS Audio Mixer Guide

OBS’s technical meter guide gives -20 dBFS as an alignment level and -9 dBFS as a permitted maximum level. Treat those as references from OBS documentation, not universal loudness targets for every platform, source, or stream. The guide says OBS currently uses a sample-peak meter and notes that oversampling could measure maximum peaks more accurately. Leave headroom for unexpected peaks rather than trying to make a soft stream’s baseline loud. OBS Understanding the Mixer

Use filters for dynamics, not to hide bad input gain

Compressor: manage uneven speech

A compressor reduces the level of a source after it passes a threshold. It can help when a soft-spoken host occasionally speaks much louder, but excessive compression can make breaths, room noise, and ambience more prominent or make the sound feel unnatural. OBS places a compressor near the beginning of the filter chain. Its documented defaults—threshold -18.00 dB, ratio 10:1, attack 6 ms, and release 60 ms—are filter defaults, not a recommended relaxation-stream preset. Start with a modest amount of gain reduction and judge it by listening to a recording. OBS Compressor Filter

If music or ambience should recede when you speak, OBS supports sidechain ducking on the music source. The official guide’s example settings are a starting point, not a rule: for a calm stream, use only enough reduction to make speech clear without an obvious swell and dip in the background. Limiter: set a final peak ceiling

A limiter is a fast, high-ratio form of compression that prevents its output from exceeding the configured threshold. OBS says to place it last in the filter chain. Its documented defaults are a -6.00 dB threshold and 60 ms release; these are defaults, not universal recommendations. Set the ceiling while recording and listening, and avoid a release or threshold that makes ambience pump or sound flattened. A limiter can catch peaks created in OBS’s processing chain, but it cannot undo clipping already introduced by a microphone, preamp, interface, or other earlier stage. OBS Limiter Filter

Noise filters do not prevent clipping

Noise gate and noise suppression filters address unwanted background sound. They are not clipping fixes; solve overload by adjusting gain where it occurs. OBS lists these and other processing options in its Filters Guide.

Record a pre-stream test that represents the real mix

  1. Open the scene and audio routing you plan to use live. Include the microphone, ambience or music, and any alerts or transitions.
  2. Record a short sample while speaking at the loudest level you expect, then include the loudest likely music change, alert, or transition.
  3. Watch the mixer and peak-hold marker during those moments. If a source reaches clipping or sounds distorted, trace back to the first stage where the distortion appears and lower that stage.
  4. Listen to the recording through headphones or speakers at a sensible volume. Check for crackle, harsh peaks, abrupt ducking, audible pumping, and ambience that has been flattened.
  5. Make one adjustment at a time and record again. Do not rely on a setup you have not heard in a representative recording.

OBS recommends testing settings before relying on them in a first stream or recording. Its Audio Mixer Guide and Monitoring Guide cover mixer levels and monitoring.

Common clipping problems and fixes

What you hear or see Likely cause What to do
Crackle or harsh distortion is audible in direct microphone or interface monitoring An input stage is overloaded before the signal reaches OBS Lower the microphone or interface input gain, or the mixer channel gain, then listen at that stage again.
The direct source sounds clean, but OBS playback distorts A later stage—such as an OS or app level, OBS source level, or OBS processing—is too high or is changing the signal Check each stage from the operating-system and application levels through OBS; bypass or adjust filters one at a time while recording.
The moving meter looks safe, but an occasional spoken word or alert sounds rough A brief peak may be easy to miss on the moving bar, or distortion may already exist upstream Use peak hold during the loudest expected material and monitor the source before OBS to locate where the distortion begins.
Music ducks dramatically or the mix surges after speech Compression or sidechain ducking is too audible for the material Reduce the amount of gain reduction and listen again to a test recording; preserve a steady ambience bed.
A limiter is active but the audio still sounds clipped The signal may have clipped before reaching the limiter Lower gain at the first overloaded upstream stage. Keep the limiter last as a ceiling, not as a substitute for safe input gain.

When extra hardware may help

You do not need to buy equipment just because OBS audio clips. If your current device offers no useful hardware input adjustment, a USB audio interface with input gain control may give you a way to set the level before OBS. For a setup with several audio sources, a physical mixer with channel and master gain controls may make those stages easier to manage. Confirm that any device fits your existing microphone and operating system; the gain-staging fix itself is still to adjust the stage where overload begins.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a separate option for keeping a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos; it does not capture a live microphone or camera. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on. That solves the always-on playback part of a relaxation stream, not OBS audio clipping in a live microphone chain.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home while the uploaded video loops.
  • One flat price per slot covers any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
