To preserve the gameplay if the broadcast cannot recover, record locally at the same time. Reconnection protects the transmission; a local recording protects a copy of the session.
Set up OBS to reconnect and save a local copy
- Enable automatic reconnect. In OBS Studio, open Settings → Advanced and turn on Automatically Reconnect. OBS lists this as a configurable setting in its overview guide. It can attempt to restore transmission after a connection loss, but OBS does not promise that every outage will recover or specify a universal retry interval in that guide.
- Start local recording as well as streaming. Configure OBS recording, choose a destination with enough free space, and verify that a recording file is being written. OBS documents its recording controls in the overview guide. YouTube also recommends a local archive as a backup; this copy is separate from the live broadcast.
- Rehearse the full gaming setup. Before an important broadcast, test with the game, scenes, encoder, recording destination, and connection arrangement you intend to use. OBS recommends testing the setup before a first stream. Check that the broadcast reaches YouTube, the local file plays, and the reconnect setting is enabled.
- Test recovery before depending on it. In a private or unlisted rehearsal, simulate a brief connection loss if you can do so safely. Observe whether OBS reconnects and whether local recording continues or produces a usable file. A rehearsal can reveal problems in your own setup; it cannot guarantee recovery during a later outage.
What happens when the internet goes out
OBS can attempt to reconnect, but viewers may still experience an interruption, and the available guidance does not establish how long YouTube preserves a particular broadcast session after an encoder disconnects. Do not assume that any outage duration will reconnect successfully or that separate segments will always become one seamless replay.
OBS explains that dropped frames or intermittent disconnections point to a network problem between the computer and the remote ingest server. The problem can include a connection that cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Its connection troubleshooting guide, dated 2024-09-30, suggests network checks such as trying another ingest server and lowering video bitrate.
If your connection is unreliable
- Try the network checks in OBS’s troubleshooting guide, including another ingest server and a lower bitrate.
- If available, a cellular hotspot or other independent internet connection may provide a second route when the primary connection fails. This is a practical inference from the network failure mode, not a guaranteed fix or a validated recommendation for a particular device. Test the backup connection with your actual stream setup; its usefulness depends on coverage, upload capacity, and configuration.
- After a test or real outage, check both the YouTube archive and the local recording. Do not treat a successful-looking live session as proof that both copies are complete.
Know what YouTube’s archive and DVR do

Troubleshoot a failed recovery or missing replay
OBS disconnects or drops frames
Use OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guidance: investigate the network path to the ingest server, try another server, and lower the video bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it. Retest after each change so you can identify what helped.

The live broadcast returns, but the replay is incomplete or missing
Check the local recording first, then check YouTube’s archive. The platform’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams shorter than 12 hours; longer streams may not be captured. If the local file is also absent or damaged, verify the recording destination, free storage, and recording operation during a rehearsal.
DVR does not let viewers rewind as expected
DVR is a viewer playback control, not a recovery mechanism. Viewers cannot rewind to before the broadcast began, and YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours.
