You can turn a recorded video into a YouTube live stream using a computer you already own, free OBS Studio software, and a stable internet connection. Add the recording as a looping media source, connect OBS to a YouTube stream key, check the preview, and then start the broadcast. The main ongoing costs are your internet plan and the electricity to run the computer; test your own connection and data allowance rather than relying on a generic Indian price estimate.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel that is verified, has live streaming enabled, and has no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube requires streamers to be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
  • A computer that can play your recording and run OBS Studio. OBS is free and open source; download it from the official OBS website.
  • A local copy of the recording, plus rights to stream its video, audio, music, and other included material.
  • An internet connection with enough sustained upload capacity for the selected stream bitrate. Test the connection you will actually use, ideally at the time and location of the broadcast.

Set up a recorded-video stream with OBS

1. Confirm your channel can go live

Open YouTube Studio and check that live streaming is enabled for your channel. Verification and activation may take time, so do this before planning a broadcast. Check for restrictions as well: YouTube’s stated eligibility includes having no live-stream restriction in the prior 90 days.

2. Add and test the recording in OBS

  1. Open OBS and select the scene you want to use. In the Sources box, select +, then choose Media Source.
  2. Name the source, select the video file on your computer, and enable Loop if you want it to repeat after playback ends. OBS’s Media Source documentation lists common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM, and explains the Loop control in its Media Sources guide.
  3. Resize or position the source in the preview so it fills the canvas as intended. Play it and check both the picture and audio through OBS before going live. If there is no sound, inspect the source and OBS audio mixer, then test again.

For a stream that should play one recording only once, leave Loop off. For a repeated or continuous programme, Loop repeats the file; it does not add new material or turn the computer off between plays.

3. Create the YouTube stream and connect OBS

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using an encoder. Configure the title, visibility, and other event details there.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event into OBS’s stream settings. Use RTMPS if it is offered and supported, as YouTube recommends encrypted RTMPS delivery.
  3. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, use YouTube’s reset flow to replace it, then update OBS with the new key.

YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains connecting an encoder and using the Live Control Room. Do not click Go Live yet; first set an appropriate output and confirm that the incoming preview works.

4. Choose resolution and bitrate for your connection

Run a speed test on the computer and network you will use to stream. YouTube advises leaving about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; the speed-test result is not a guarantee of a stable stream. Its guidance is to make sure the outbound connection can sustain the stream bitrate. The H.264 recommendations below are platform reference points, not promises about what a particular connection can hold:

Output YouTube H.264 bitrate guidance
480p30 0.4 Mbps minimum; 4 Mbps recommended
720p30 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended
1080p30 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended

These figures are from YouTube’s encoder settings guidance, checked in 2026. Set OBS to H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. AAC or MP3 audio is supported by its recommendations.

Pick a bitrate your tested upload can sustain with headroom, then choose a resolution that makes sense for the recording’s detail and motion. A lower resolution that remains stable is usually a better starting point than pushing the connection to its limit. Use YouTube’s encoder settings reference for additional supported configurations.

5. Preview, go live, and monitor

  1. Start streaming from OBS. Wait for the stream to appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview.
  2. Check that the picture is framed correctly and that the audio is present, clear, and at an appropriate level. Confirm the event’s title and visibility before making it public.
  3. When the preview and stream health look right, select Go Live in the Live Control Room. Keep an eye on YouTube’s stream-health indicators and OBS while the broadcast runs.

Test beforehand with footage that has similar motion and audio to the planned programme. A static image may not reveal the same encoding or network problems as a busy scene.

6. End the broadcast cleanly

When finished, end the stream in YouTube and stop the encoder output in OBS. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a longer continuous broadcast will be archived the same way. Check the resulting video in Studio if you need to confirm it was saved.

Keep the setup low-cost without sacrificing reliability

Using an existing computer and free OBS avoids buying a dedicated streaming encoder or paying for streaming software. Before spending on accessories, test your current setup over a sustained run. If the computer and router both have Ethernet ports, a wired connection using an appropriate cable is one option to try; it is practical troubleshooting, not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee of better service.

For India, check your own internet plan’s upload performance and data allowance against the bitrate and planned runtime. The sources do not establish a national tariff or data cost, and those vary by provider, plan, and location. For example, a stream running at a higher bitrate sends more data than one at a lower bitrate, so include runtime when checking your allowance.

Copyright and monetization are separate questions

Only stream material you have the rights and permissions to use, including music, footage, images, and performances. YouTube says live streams can be terminated for copyright or Community Guidelines strikes; Content ID claims may also be applied after a livestream if it is archived. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

Permission to use a recording does not by itself guarantee monetization. YouTube’s reused-content and inauthentic-content monetization policies apply to live streams as well as other formats. Reused content can include material taken from YouTube or another online source without significant original commentary, substantive changes, or educational or entertainment value; the policy review is separate from copyright enforcement. Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies before building a channel around existing recordings.

Troubleshooting common problems

Problem Likely cause What to check or do
YouTube does not show an incoming preview OBS is not sending output, or the stream URL/key is incorrect. Confirm OBS is streaming, then compare the event’s current URL and key with OBS settings. Reset an exposed key in YouTube and replace it in OBS.
Stream health reports dropped frames or instability The upload connection may not sustain the configured bitrate consistently. Run another speed test, reduce bitrate or resolution, leave YouTube’s recommended headroom, and test again over a sustained run.
The video plays but has no audio The source may be muted, audio routing may be wrong, or the file may have no usable audio track. Check the source and OBS audio mixer, listen to a test playback, and verify the recording itself has sound.
The recording stops at the end Loop is disabled. Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop if the programme is meant to repeat.
Livestream is interrupted or terminated Possible network, channel restriction, copyright, or Community Guidelines issue. Check YouTube’s Live Control Room notices and channel status; address the indicated issue before restarting.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you need a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded recordings while your computer is off, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the stream running from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card (one free day per account). Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are supported in India; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo plans, then start your free day.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a phone instead of a computer for this OBS method?

This workflow uses OBS Studio on a computer. A phone is not a substitute for running OBS in this setup.

Will my stream automatically save as a YouTube video?

YouTube’s automatic archiving guidance covers streams shorter than 12 hours. For longer broadcasts, verify the outcome in YouTube Studio rather than relying on an archive.
