You can stream a finished podcast episode on YouTube Live without a camera or live microphone: use an encoder such as OBS to send the audio file and a still image together as a live video. Create or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio, connect the encoder with the stream URL and private stream key, check the preview, then start the broadcast.
Before you start: check eligibility and rights
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Its current Help page sets the minimum age to livestream at 16. Confirm that your channel is eligible, and follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements explain the account conditions.
Prepare the podcast audio file and a still image you are authorized to broadcast. Having made or uploaded an episode does not automatically establish that you have permission to rebroadcast every music track, guest contribution, or piece of artwork in it. Resolve the rights for both the audio and image before going live.
You do not need a live microphone, camera, mixer, capture card, or hardware encoder for this prepared-media setup. The encoder creates the video stream by pairing the image with the audio. OBS is one software option; its source documentation covers media and audio sources, though controls and playback options can vary by version. OBS Studio Knowledge Base

How to stream a podcast with a still image
-
Create or schedule the YouTube stream
In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live to open the Live Control Room. Open the Stream tab and create a stream or select one you have scheduled. Choose public, private, or unlisted visibility for your intended audience or a test. YouTube’s interface can change, so labels may differ slightly. See YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance.
-
Add the podcast audio and image in OBS
In OBS, add a media source for the podcast file and an image source for the static visual. Confirm that the audio source is not muted and that the image is visible in the preview. Check the media source’s playback and restart behavior: do not assume the audio will repeat automatically. If you want a looping broadcast, configure and verify that behavior in the encoder before the event.

Connect OBS to YouTube
If your encoder offers a YouTube account or service preset, you can select it. Otherwise, copy the stream URL and stream key from the Live Control Room into the encoder’s streaming settings. Use RTMPS where supported; YouTube recommends it to encrypt the connection. Treat the stream key like a password: never show it in a screen capture or publish it. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before using it again. YouTube explains the connection fields in its encoder setup instructions.
-
Set audio and video output
YouTube’s published recommendations for stereo audio over RTMP/RTMPS include AAC or MP3, a 44.1 kHz sample rate, and 128 kbps. For video, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Follow the encoder’s current controls for entering these values. Choose a resolution, frame rate, and video bitrate your upload connection can sustain. A still image uses little visual change, but the encoder still transmits video alongside the audio. YouTube’s guidance gives these H.264 examples:
Output example Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate 480p at 30 fps 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps 720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps These are YouTube Help recommendations, not guarantees of uninterrupted delivery. Its suggested bitrate depends on incoming codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the current settings page for other output combinations. YouTube also recommends about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Check the upload capacity at the actual connection you will use, including any simultaneous backup stream, and test at your intended settings. YouTube’s encoder settings and live-streaming tips

Preview, test, and start the live event
Start streaming from OBS and wait for the incoming preview in the Live Control Room. Confirm that the still image is visible and the podcast audio is audible, then start the YouTube event as required by the workflow shown in Studio. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with the same audio and image arrangement—and similar network conditions—as the planned broadcast, then check stream health and any messages before relying on it for an audience. YouTube encoder settings
-
Monitor the broadcast and end it cleanly
During the stream, monitor audio playback and YouTube’s stream-health indicators. When finished, stop sending content from OBS and end the event in the Live Control Room as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If a complete copy of a longer broadcast matters, arrange a separate recording or backup rather than assuming YouTube will archive the whole event. YouTube live-stream guidance

Choose software encoding or hardware
For a finished audio file and one still image, a software encoder on a computer is the straightforward fit: it can play local media and send the composed output to YouTube. YouTube also lists hardware encoders for production setups, but a dedicated hardware encoder is not required for this prepared-media workflow. Consider hardware only if your production needs—such as more involved live input switching—justify its additional setup and cost. YouTube’s streaming setup guidance
Troubleshoot common problems
- No YouTube preview: Confirm that OBS is actually sending, the encoder reports a connection, and the stream URL and key match the stream selected in the Live Control Room. Check that the protocol and encoder settings are compatible with the YouTube setup.
- The image appears but there is no sound: Check that the correct podcast file is selected, the media source is not muted, its volume is up, and the encoder’s audio meter responds. Listen to the preview before starting the event. OBS’s source documentation covers audio and media sources.
- Output stutters or drops: Reduce the video bitrate or resolution to a level your connection can sustain. Check upload capacity, leave the recommended headroom, and test the network at the location and time you plan to stream. No single bitrate guarantees continuity.
- The audio stops early or does not repeat: Check the media source’s end-of-file and restart or loop behavior in your encoder. Playback controls are software-specific, so verify the complete sequence before the live event.
- The archive is incomplete or absent: YouTube’s automatic-archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours. For longer events, keep a separate recording if you need a complete copy.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded recordings without leaving a computer on, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera, and it streams to YouTube.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs in the cloud.
- Each slot has one flat price for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encoding or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required; it is one free day per account.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, then start your free day.
