To stream a church service continuously with OBS, create or schedule a YouTube stream, connect OBS with its private stream key, set a tested video and audio profile, and rehearse the full signal path before worship begins. “Continuous” can mean a recurring Sunday service or one uninterrupted broadcast; for a stream longer than 12 hours, YouTube warns that it may not capture the archive at all, so make a local recording.

First decide what “continuous” means

A recurring Sunday broadcast and a single uninterrupted stream have different operational needs. For a scheduled service, prepare the OBS scene and YouTube event in advance, then start and end the broadcast around the service. For a long-running feed, plan for continuous power, network access, monitoring, recovery, and a local recording.

YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Treat the YouTube archive as uncertain beyond that duration and record locally. YouTube Help: Archive live streams

Create the YouTube stream and protect its key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream for the service. Set its privacy and event details as appropriate for your congregation.
  2. Open the stream settings and copy the stream URL and stream key. The URL identifies where the feed goes; the key identifies your stream. YouTube describes the key as functioning like a password, so do not publish it or send it in a public chat.
  3. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and connect the account or enter the stream key, depending on the connection option shown in your OBS version.
  4. If a key is exposed, have a channel owner or manager reset it in YouTube Studio and replace the saved key in OBS. YouTube allows custom stream keys to be reused; keep the replacement private.

See YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming for YouTube’s current stream settings guidance.

Choose an OBS picture and encoding profile

Match the canvas and output to the church sources

For a conventional landscape sanctuary shot, 16:9 is a sensible starting point. In OBS, set Settings → Video so the base canvas matches the production sources and the output resolution matches what you intend to send to YouTube. Use 30 fps for a typical fixed-camera service unless the source motion or production needs justify a higher frame rate. These are practical defaults, not YouTube requirements; YouTube supports up to 60 fps.

Use YouTube’s bitrate guidance for the exact H.264 mode

For a straightforward H.264 setup, select CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval in Settings → Output. YouTube recommends a 2-second interval and says it should not exceed 4 seconds. Its current guidance also recommends RTMPS. The values below are YouTube’s H.264 ingest guidance, accessed October 3, 2026—not a guarantee that a connection can sustain the stream.

Output H.264 bitrate minimum H.264 bitrate recommended
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These figures apply to the listed resolution and frame rate. Pick a mode only after measuring sustained upload at the church’s streaming location. If the connection varies or is shared, prefer a lower resolution or frame rate over an unstable high-bitrate feed, then inspect the picture on a test stream. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS; H.264 is a practical common starting point when configuring a basic OBS workflow. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

Set worship audio deliberately

For stereo audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS, recommends 128 Kbps stereo, and specifies a 44.1 kHz stereo sample rate. Use an audio feed from the church sound system when available, and listen to the actual OBS mix: a camera microphone may not capture the congregation, speech, or music clearly. Confirm that OBS meters move and that the preview sounds balanced before going live.

Choose software or hardware encoding based on the computer

OBS can encode on the CPU with x264 or use a supported hardware encoder. Hardware encoding shifts work to specialized GPU hardware and may reduce CPU load; older hardware encoders can produce lower quality than x264 at the same bitrate. Test the exact computer, preset, and output before service rather than assuming one encoder is always better. If the service needs a separate local-recording encoder, use OBS’s Advanced output mode to configure stream and recording settings independently. OBS Project: Hardware Encoding

Plan the church’s network and signal path

Measure upload bandwidth and leave headroom

Run an upload speed test at the streaming location, ideally during a period resembling service-time network use. YouTube advises leaving 20% bandwidth headroom; OBS’s general troubleshooting guidance suggests using about 75% of total upload as a starting point for bitrate. If the connection is variable or shared, use the more conservative result. For YouTube’s primary-plus-backup streaming setup, its guidance calls for primary bitrate plus backup bitrate plus 20% headroom.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

A wired Ethernet connection is preferable when Wi-Fi is unstable. A cable can reduce wireless instability, but it will not fix an overloaded shared network, weak ISP service, or an OBS bitrate that exceeds what the connection can reliably carry. YouTube Help: Streaming tips and OBS Project: Dropped Frames and General Connection Issues explain the network considerations.

Trace the program from source to OBS

Write down the actual signal path: camera or cameras, any switcher or capture device, the sound-console output, OBS sources, and the final program scene. Then check each source in OBS. The right equipment depends on the church’s existing setup; not every church needs a separate capture card, mixer, or encoder.

Rehearse the whole stream before service

  1. Set up the encoder well ahead of time. YouTube recommends configuring it at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start.
  2. Start OBS streaming and wait for the preview in YouTube Live Control Room. Do not announce the stream publicly until the preview is working and the event settings are correct.
  3. Test representative content: speech, music, quiet moments, movement, and any transitions or lower thirds used in the service. Check both the Live Control Room preview and the actual watch page, including on a phone.
  4. Watch the stream-health status and OBS statistics for dropped frames or encoding overload. Confirm the audio is intelligible and synchronized with the picture.
  5. Start local recording and confirm the file is being created and growing. Know where it is saved and who will verify it after the service.
  6. Agree on a recovery plan: who can restart OBS or network equipment, who can access the YouTube stream key, and how the service will continue if the broadcast fails. YouTube’s checklist also describes testing backup-encoder failover where a backup is available.

OBS Project’s overview guide says, “It’s strongly recommended that you test everything as best as you can before starting your first live stream.” YouTube Help also cautions, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” OBS Studio Overview Guide · YouTube Help: Streaming tips

Save a known-good OBS setup

Create an OBS Profile for the stream and output settings, and save or export the Scene Collection separately. A Profile stores output and stream settings; a Scene Collection stores scenes and sources, so saving one does not back up the other. Keep a known-good copy where the team can recover it if the streaming computer or OBS installation changes. OBS Project: Profiles

Troubleshoot common failures

  • YouTube does not show an incoming stream: Check that the correct scheduled event is open, the OBS service and key match that event, and OBS is actively streaming. If the key may have been exposed or reset, update OBS with the current key.
  • Dropped frames or an unstable stream: Lower the video bitrate to a level the measured connection can sustain. Prefer wired networking if Wi-Fi is unstable; check whether other devices are using the connection, and review VPN, firewall/security software, network drivers, and alternate server options.
  • OBS reports encoding lag or the computer struggles: Reduce output resolution or frame rate, test a different encoder, and close unnecessary workloads. A hardware encoder can move work off the CPU, but compare the result on the actual system.
  • Picture looks soft or motion is choppy: Check that the OBS canvas and output match the source, then confirm the chosen resolution and frame rate have an adequate bitrate. Test a higher mode only if the connection and computer can sustain it.
  • Audio is missing, too quiet, or out of sync: Check the selected OBS audio source and meters, verify the sound-console feed, and listen to the stream preview. Test the actual service mix before the event rather than relying on the camera microphone.
  • The YouTube archive is incomplete or absent: For a broadcast longer than 12 hours, YouTube says capture may not occur at all. Use the local recording as the preservation copy.

OBS’s connection guide notes that dropped frames usually indicate unstable connectivity or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Its overview also documents automatic reconnect under Advanced settings; treat reconnect as a recovery aid, not a substitute for a stable connection and an assigned operator.
