To loop a study video on YouTube Live with OBS, add it to a scene as a Media Source, select the video file, and enable Loop. For several videos, add a VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. Then connect OBS to a stream in YouTube Studio using its server URL and stream key, start streaming in OBS, and click Go live once the preview appears. Before broadcasting, confirm your channel can livestream and that you have permission to use every video and audio element.
Before you set up the stream
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and have no livestreaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s current help page also says streamers must be at least 16. First-time livestream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so activate it well before your planned stream. YouTube: Get started with live streaming
- Install OBS Studio and have the study video files available on the computer that will run the stream. For a playlist, install VLC as well; OBS says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC for its VLC Video source.
- Check your computer and internet connection can sustain the stream for the intended duration. With OBS running locally, the computer and connection must remain available while the stream is live.
Loop one study video in OBS
- Open OBS Studio and choose or create the scene you want to broadcast.
- In the Sources box, select + and choose Media Source. Give the source a recognizable name.
- In the source properties, select the local video file. OBS documents common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM. If you want OBS to use the same file each time, leave Local File selected and browse to it.
- Enable Loop, then select OK. The video starts again when playback completes.
- Check the OBS preview. Resize or reposition the source on the canvas if needed, and confirm the picture and audio are as intended before connecting to YouTube.
OBS’s Media Source documentation describes the Loop property as controlling whether the file plays again after playback has completed. The documented setting names are from the OBS Project’s article dated January 11, 2022; labels or layout can vary in later OBS versions. OBS Project: Media Sources
Loop a playlist of study videos
- In Sources, select + and choose VLC Video.
- Add the video files in the order you want them to play. The VLC Video source supports a playlist rather than just one file.
- Keep Loop Playlist enabled if you want playback to return to the beginning after the final item.
- Check the OBS preview and audio. If VLC Video is unavailable, install VLC; OBS notes that the VLC and OBS installations must match in architecture, so 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
Use Media Source for one repeating file; use VLC Video when the stream should cycle through a set of files. Both approaches play local files through OBS, so keep the computer running and the files accessible for the broadcast.
Create a YouTube Live stream and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to open the Live Control Room. Create a stream or open the settings for an existing one. The labels may vary slightly with YouTube Studio updates. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder
- In the stream settings, copy the YouTube stream URL (server URL) and stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube if the service is available, or choose the option to enter a server URL. Paste the server URL and stream key into the corresponding fields, then apply the settings.
- Select Start Streaming in OBS. Return to YouTube’s Live Control Room and wait for the stream preview to appear.
- When the preview is ready, select Go live in the Live Control Room. Starting the encoder in OBS sends the feed; the YouTube control-room action makes the stream live to viewers.
Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to that stream. Do not post it publicly or include it in a screen recording. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before using that stream again.

Check rights and monetization before broadcasting
Only stream material you are allowed to rebroadcast
A video’s public availability on YouTube does not by itself give you permission to rebroadcast it on your channel. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have the necessary rights to exploit live content on Google services worldwide, including relevant music licensing rights, and to comply with laws and regulatory requirements that apply where the stream is carried. Use your own study video or obtain permission that covers livestreaming and any resulting archive. YouTube Terms of Service
This applies to the soundtrack and other embedded elements too: a licensed song, lecture clip, animation, image, or other third-party element may require separate permission. A video being useful for studying or freely viewable online is not proof that you can stream it.

Do not assume a repeated video will qualify for monetization
YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams. Its guidance says monetized content should be original and authentic; an update dated July 15, 2025 clarifies that repetitive or mass-produced content falls under the “inauthentic content” policy. YouTube gives similar or repetitive content with little educational value, commentary, narrative, or variation as examples of concern. A continuously repeated prerecorded video may therefore create monetization uncertainty, but the policy does not say every loop is automatically ineligible; review considers the channel and content as a whole. Turning on OBS Loop alone does not establish eligibility. YouTube channel monetization policies
Creators in India should follow the requirements that apply to their stream and its content. The documented OBS and YouTube setup does not identify a separate India-specific looping setting or permission.

Troubleshooting OBS study-video loops
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The video stops after one play | Loop is off, or the wrong source is being used. | Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. For multiple files, check Loop Playlist on the VLC Video source. |
| VLC Video does not appear in the source menu | VLC is missing or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC and ensure 64-bit OBS is paired with 64-bit VLC, then reopen OBS. |
| YouTube does not show a preview | The stream URL or key may be incorrect, or OBS may not be sending. | Check OBS’s stream settings against the URL and key in YouTube Studio, confirm OBS says it is streaming, and check the Live Control Room again. |
| The preview appears, but viewers cannot see the stream | The encoder feed has started, but the Live Control Room’s Go live action may not have been selected. | Wait for the preview, then select Go live in YouTube Studio. |
| The channel cannot start a livestream | Livestream access may not be enabled, the channel may not be verified, or a restriction may apply. | Check YouTube’s livestream eligibility information and allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement. |
| The stream ends when you leave | OBS is running on the local computer, which may have shut down, lost power, or lost its internet connection. | Keep the computer and network available for the broadcast, or use a cloud service that runs the loop without your home computer. |
