To loop a podcast recording in OBS, add it to a scene as a Media Source and turn on Loop. For a playlist of recordings, use VLC Video Source and enable Loop Playlist. Then configure OBS to send the scene to YouTube and check the Live Control Room preview before you go public.
Choose the right OBS source
For one podcast file, use Media Source; its Loop setting repeats that file when playback reaches the end. For several files that should play as a playlist, use VLC Video Source. OBS documents support for common video formats such as MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI and WebM, and audio formats such as MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources guide for source details.
| What you want to play | OBS source | Repeat control | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| One audio or video recording | Media Source | Loop | Choose the local media file in the source properties. |
| A playlist of recordings | VLC Video Source | Loop Playlist | Install VLC; OBS must match its architecture. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC. |
Loop one podcast file with Media Source
- Open OBS and select the scene that should contain the podcast.
- In the Sources area, add a Media Source. Create a new source if prompted, then select the local audio or video file in its properties.
- Enable Loop. This controls whether the file starts over after reaching its end.
- Choose whether to enable Restart playback when source becomes active. This is a separate setting: it restarts the file when the source is in the current scene and becomes visible. It does not make the file repeat at the end.
- Use Show nothing when playback ends only when you want a non-looping source to disappear when it finishes. A looping source should keep playing instead of reaching its end.
- If the source is hidden or used in another scene, check its visibility and activation behavior. Switch scenes during a test to confirm when playback starts or resumes.
- For video with embedded audio, check that the source’s audio appears and is audible in the OBS mixer, and that the intended scene is the one being sent to YouTube.
Loop a playlist with VLC Video Source
- Install VLC before setting up the source. OBS’s VLC Video Source uses VLC libraries and is available only when VLC is installed.
- In the selected scene, add a VLC Video Source and build the playlist from the files you want to play.
- Enable Loop Playlist so playback returns to the beginning after the last item.
- If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. If the source is missing from OBS, first check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
- Test switching away from and back to the scene. Confirm the playlist behaves as you intend when its source is hidden or made visible.
For a single recording, Media Source is the simpler setup. VLC Video Source is the playlist branch or an option when you need VLC’s extended media support.
Connect OBS to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, create or select an encoder stream and follow YouTube’s current instructions for connecting an encoder. Configure OBS with the stream destination and stream key provided by YouTube.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not include it in a screen recording, broadcast, or message to someone who should not control the stream.
- Before scheduling a public broadcast, confirm that the channel is eligible. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance says encoder streams require a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; YouTube’s general guidance also says streamers must be at least 16. Check the current Help page and Studio screens because requirements and interface labels can change.
- Select an output resolution and frame rate that fit the recording and your connection, then use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate and resolution guidance for the corresponding settings. There is no single bitrate that fits every resolution, frame rate and network. YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported.
- Check that you have the rights or necessary permissions for the podcast recording, music, clips and other material in the stream. A file looping in OBS does not grant permission to rebroadcast it or guarantee that a channel satisfies YouTube’s policies.
Preflight the stream and monitor it live
- Test the complete scene and YouTube stream with audio and motion representative of the intended broadcast.
- Check the Live Control Room preview before starting publicly. Confirm the picture is framed correctly and the audio is present and at a suitable level.
- Make sure your upload capacity has headroom. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% beyond the total stream bitrate.
- While live, monitor audio, picture and stream-health messages. A local loop can continue normally even if the connection to YouTube has a problem.
Troubleshoot common loop and stream problems
- The recording plays once and stops: enable Loop on Media Source, or Loop Playlist on VLC Video Source.
- Playback does not restart when you switch to the scene: check Restart playback when source becomes active for Media Source, and check source visibility and activation behavior for the scene. Restart-on-activation and Loop do different jobs.
- VLC Video Source is not available: install VLC and check that its 64-bit or 32-bit architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- The picture appears but there is no sound: inspect the source’s audio in the OBS mixer, then listen to the Live Control Room preview using headphones or another appropriate monitoring setup.
- YouTube’s preview or stream health is poor: test with representative sound and movement, check the encoder settings for the selected output, verify upload headroom, and inspect YouTube’s stream-health messages.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running without leaving OBS and a computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative for uploaded videos. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; recordings stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
