You can use a spare PC as a nonstop sermon-stream encoder by feeding it the church camera and audio, building a scene in OBS, and sending the stream to YouTube with the channel’s stream URL and key. The difficult part is not starting the stream; it is keeping the computer, internet connection, audio and broadcast workflow dependable over time. Test the full setup before relying on it, and plan for YouTube’s archive limit: streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
Choose what the stream will show
Start by deciding whether viewers should see a live sanctuary camera, recorded sermon material, presentation slides or a combination. Then trace the signal path: video and audio sources enter the PC, OBS combines them into a scene, and OBS sends the program to YouTube Live.
- USB webcam: Connect it directly to the PC. An HDMI capture card is not needed for a USB webcam.
- HDMI camera or switcher: The PC needs a compatible capture input. If it has none, a USB HDMI capture card may be appropriate; check the camera output, operating-system and driver compatibility before buying.
- Slides with camera video: Presentation software such as Proclaim can provide a slide-and-video composition for OBS.
- Audio: Identify whether sound will come from the church soundboard, a microphone connected to the PC or another intended input. Do not assume that the camera or computer microphone is the right source.
Proclaim’s church streaming guide describes a setup using a camera or webcam, microphone, optional video switcher and OBS, and recommends at least 5 Mbps upload speed. That is the vendor’s recommendation, not a guarantee for every resolution, frame rate or shared internet connection. See Proclaim’s live-stream setup guide and Logos’ church-oriented YouTube example.
Prepare the spare PC for continuous use
Install OBS and check the machine
Download the current OBS release from the official OBS Project site. OBS publishes baseline operating-system and graphics requirements, but meeting them does not establish that a particular PC can encode a stable continuous stream. Workload depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. Review the OBS system requirements, then use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard to get a starting setup based on the available hardware and network.

Reduce avoidable interruptions
For a dedicated streaming PC, close applications the stream does not need, connect reliable power and network, prevent sleep while streaming, and keep the machine’s ventilation unobstructed. These are practical operating precautions, not a guarantee of nonstop operation. An unspecified older PC should not be trusted for 24/7 encoding until it has been tested under the intended load.
Build the OBS scene and verify sound
- Open OBS and add a scene for the sermon program.
- Add the intended video source: the webcam, capture card or slide output. Add any title, logo or static graphic the church needs.
- Select the intended microphone or soundboard input explicitly. In OBS’s audio mixer, speak or play the feed and check that the meter responds.
- Listen to a recording or private/unlisted test. Confirm speech is intelligible, levels do not clip and unwanted desktop audio or an open microphone is not being captured.
OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends checking audio meters and selecting devices manually if the defaults are wrong. For a sermon, clear, consistent speech generally matters more than a complicated scene layout. If audio is coming from a church mixer, verify the feed level at the PC rather than assuming the mixer output is suitable.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the broadcast.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose the appropriate YouTube service or server option, and enter the URL and key as required by the current interface.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone with access to it may be able to send video to the channel.
- If the encoder supports RTMPS, use the secure RTMPS ingestion URL provided in Live Control Room. YouTube describes RTMPS as encrypted RTMP; see YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
First-time live streaming may require enabling the feature on the channel, and YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours. Set resolution, frame rate and bitrate to match both what the PC can encode and what the real upload connection can sustain. Higher frame rates, particularly 60 fps, can increase encoding load. OBS explains the relevant bitrate, resolution, frame-rate and reconnect settings in its OBS Studio Overview Guide; do not treat a single upload-speed figure as proof that a particular configuration will work.
Test the complete broadcast before depending on it
Use a short test before the first public broadcast, as OBS advises. Check the image and sound from the viewer’s perspective, not just inside the preview.

- Confirm camera framing, slide readability, titles and any scene transitions.
- View the YouTube watch page on a second device and listen for echo, distortion, silence or unintended audio.
- Watch OBS for dropped frames and encoding overload.
- Test the power, sleep and network behavior for long enough to expose heat or connection problems. A brief successful test does not establish 24/7 reliability.
OBS’s quick-start instructions cover basic setup and testing, while its requirements page cautions that baseline compatibility does not guarantee encoding performance.
Plan the broadcast length and archives
YouTube Help states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not depend on a single broadcast longer than 12 hours being available as a complete replay. Decide whether the goal is a continuous viewing feed, separate replayable sermon broadcasts, or both, and choose an ending or segmentation routine accordingly.

Before launch, verify the channel’s current Live Control Room workflow and test what happens when a broadcast ends, reconnects or reaches an archive boundary. The available official guidance does not establish a complete 24/7 sermon-channel procedure, so confirm the actual behavior for the channel rather than assuming that reconnects or archives will work a particular way. - OBS has no camera picture: Check that the camera is powered and connected, then verify that OBS is using the correct webcam or capture-device source. For an HDMI camera, confirm that the PC has a compatible capture input and that the capture device is recognized.
- The stream is silent or has the wrong sound: Select the intended input in OBS, watch its mixer meter while audio is playing, and check the soundboard feed and connections. Mute sources that should not be heard.
- Video stutters or OBS reports encoding overload: Reduce scene complexity, resolution or frame rate, or use a less demanding encoder setting that the PC can sustain. Re-test; a computer’s baseline specifications alone do not settle this.
- Dropped frames or repeated disconnects: Check the actual upload connection and competing network use, and confirm that the stream URL and key belong to the intended YouTube broadcast. OBS has reconnect-related settings, but reconnect behavior should be tested rather than presumed.
- You cannot start the first live broadcast: Confirm live streaming is enabled for the channel and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- The recording is missing or incomplete: Check the broadcast duration and archive expectations. YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours, not to a longer uninterrupted broadcast.
