Divide a live stream’s estimated ad revenue by its views, then multiply by 1,000. For example, $240 in estimated ad revenue across 30,000 views works out to $8 per 1,000 views. That is a calculation from those inputs—not a standard YouTube payout rate or a promise of what another stream will earn.
Use this formula for an ad-only rate
Estimated ad revenue per 1,000 live-stream views = (estimated ad revenue ÷ live-stream views) × 1,000
For example, if a stream reports $240 in estimated ad revenue and 30,000 views for the same period and content scope: ($240 ÷ 30,000) × 1,000 = $8 per 1,000 views. The numbers are an illustrative arithmetic example, not a typical YouTube rate.
This is a custom rate you calculate from your own reporting; YouTube does not define a separate metric called “live stream ad revenue per 1,000 views.”

Get matching figures in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Analytics, then open the revenue reporting view.
- Use estimated ad revenue for the numerator. Do not substitute total estimated revenue if you want to measure ads alone.
- Where the Revenue report offers a Live content filter or breakdown, use it to isolate live streams and live replays. YouTube’s separate live metrics guidance notes that interaction and revenue reports are unavailable when filtering strictly for Live, so report availability depends on the view and filter.
- Use the view count for the same stream or content scope and date range as the revenue figure. If the live-specific revenue breakdown is unavailable in the view you need, avoid combining mismatched totals; use the closest matching reporting scope and label the result accordingly.
- Apply the formula above. If comparing streams or periods, align date ranges and content scope before comparing the results.
Do not confuse ad revenue, RPM, and CPM
These metrics answer different questions:
- Your calculated ad revenue per 1,000 views: your estimated ad revenue divided by total views, multiplied by 1,000.
- RPM: creator revenue per 1,000 views after YouTube’s revenue share. It can include ads, YouTube Premium, memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers, so it is broader than ad revenue alone.
- CPM: advertiser cost per 1,000 ad impressions before YouTube’s revenue share.
- Playback-based CPM: advertiser cost per 1,000 video playbacks that included an ad.
CPM and playback-based CPM are advertiser-side measures, not what you earn per 1,000 total views. RPM is a creator metric, but it includes more than ads. For a specifically ad-only rate, calculate from estimated ad revenue and total views.
Why views do not equal ad opportunities
A view is not necessarily a monetized playback or an ad impression. YouTube defines an estimated monetized playback as a playback with at least one ad; one playback can include more than one ad impression. Some views have no ad because ads are off, the content is not advertiser-friendly, suitable inventory is unavailable, or delivery is affected by targeting, geography, recent ad exposure, or a viewer’s Premium subscription.

On live streams, an ad slot is an opportunity, not a guarantee: YouTube Help says, “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” As a result, adding views without a corresponding rise in ad-served playbacks can reduce your calculated ad revenue per total view.
What can change the result
- Ad delivery and mid-roll settings: Live streams can use automatic or manually managed mid-rolls. YouTube offers low, medium, or high automatic mid-roll frequency, and documents intervals for scheduled breaks. These settings create opportunities; they do not guarantee that ads will run.
- Audience and inventory: Viewer geography, ad targeting, available inventory, and ad formats affect ad delivery and CPM.
- Eligibility and viewing context: Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium earnings on live videos require acceptance of the Watch Page Monetization Module. YouTube also says ads are turned off for a live stream in an embedded player with autoplay.
- Estimate adjustments: Estimated monthly revenue can change because of invalid traffic, Content ID claims or disputes, and some campaign types. YouTube says adjustments happen after one week and again in the middle of the following month.
How to compare two streams fairly
Before drawing conclusions about a change in performance, match the date range and content scope. Then compare the ad-only rate alongside these factors, where available:

What YouTube’s mid-roll figure does—and does not—show
YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour for channels that turned on automatic live mid-roll ads, compared with channels that did not. The platform’s comparison measured January 2024 results across 207 countries. It is a historical average for revenue per hour—not a per-1,000-view benchmark, and not a promised increase for an individual channel.

Keep a YouTube stream running while you measure it
If your measurement relies on a continuous prerecorded YouTube stream, StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos looping from the cloud, so a computer at home does not have to stay on. You upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. That can simplify keeping a stream available, but it does not guarantee views, ad delivery, or earnings.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo runs the stream without a home computer staying on, plays uploads at their original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
