You can turn a spare PC into a YouTube lofi radio by running OBS as the encoder: prepare music and visuals you have permission to livestream, connect OBS to a YouTube stream key, set a stable output profile, then test and monitor the broadcast. The PC, OBS, internet connection, and playback application must stay working for a do-it-yourself stream to continue; YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop options do not by themselves recover from a computer or network failure.
Before you set up the stream
Check YouTube live-stream access
Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction during the preceding 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so complete that step before your planned launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Choose music you can broadcast
Use original music, public-domain material, or tracks whose license explicitly permits your intended livestream use. YouTube’s livestream terms make the creator responsible for having the necessary rights, including music rights. A track being labeled “free,” crediting its creator, or having a written license does not necessarily prevent a Content ID interruption.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. It may replace a stream with a placeholder and warn you; continued use can result in a temporary interruption or termination. If you have licensed third-party music, ask the rights holder to add your channel to its allowlist: YouTube says a live stream can be interrupted even when you have a license if the channel is not allowlisted. Review YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and tips for finding safe music. YouTube’s Audio Library, original music, Creator Music in certain regions, and third-party catalogs are possible starting points, not blanket clearance for every track or use.

Prepare a visual and audio source
Create an OBS scene with a static image or a looped visual and your music playback source. Use visuals you have permission to broadcast, too. Audio routing depends on your operating system and playback app; before starting, confirm that the music is reaching OBS by watching the Audio Mixer meters and listening to a recording or private test. A visible meter confirms signal, not that the audience will hear a clean, correctly balanced mix.
Create a YouTube encoder stream

Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Choose the encoder option to create or manage a stream, then enter the stream details and settings that suit your broadcast. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup steps.

Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream. Treat the key as a password: anyone with it may be able to send video to your broadcast. Do not publish it, show it on screen, or share it in screenshots. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio. YouTube explains stream-key settings in Manage live stream settings.

Choose the stream’s visibility and start time in YouTube Studio. For setup checks, use a test or private/unlisted broadcast as appropriate; verify the selected visibility before making the stream public.

Connect OBS to YouTube

Install and open OBS Studio on the spare PC. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube or YouTube RTMPS as the service when available, then enter the stream key. If using a custom service configuration, enter YouTube’s stream URL as the server and the key in the stream-key field. OBS describes the service, server, and key controls in its Studio Overview Guide.

Build a scene for the broadcast. Add the visual as an image or media source, and add the music playback through the audio-capture method appropriate for your system. Keep the stream key private, including in any screen recording or live desktop capture.

Check the Audio Mixer. Start music playback and confirm the correct source registers consistently. Prevent other system sounds, alerts, or notifications from being captured if they do not belong in the radio stream.

Click Start Streaming in OBS. Check YouTube’s Live Control Room for the incoming preview and stream-health messages before opening the broadcast to viewers. Starting the encoder and making the stream public are separate choices; use the controls in YouTube Studio to manage the broadcast.

Set resolution, bitrate, and audio
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance as the platform reference. For a basic SDR lofi radio, YouTube recommends RTMPS; its guidance supports H.264, HEVC, and AV1 video with RTMP/RTMPS, and AAC or MP3 audio. OBS and your selected configuration must support the encoder and protocol you choose.
Start with a stable video profile

Choose a resolution and frame rate your spare PC can encode reliably. A largely static radio visual generally has little motion, but the video still needs to remain stable and within YouTube’s published settings.

YouTube publishes 2 Mbps minimum, 6 Mbps recommended, and 8 Mbps maximum for 720p at 30 fps video. These are YouTube’s figures, not a guarantee that a particular connection or encoder will deliver smoothly.

Set the video rate control to CBR and the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, as YouTube recommends; do not exceed four seconds. Set the bitrate in OBS to a value your sustained upload can support, leaving headroom for normal variation. A brief speed-test peak is not the same as a stable long-duration upload.

Set audio deliberately
YouTube’s advanced guidance gives 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps for stereo audio. Select a supported audio codec such as AAC or MP3, use stereo if your source is stereo, and check the music for clipping, silence, or an unintended second audio source. Confirm the sound from the actual YouTube preview or a test recording rather than relying only on the OBS meters.
When HLS is relevant
For this standard setup, use RTMPS. YouTube also documents HLS ingestion for HDR or workflows that require HLS-compatible codecs; it uses segmented delivery and has higher latency. Unless you have one of those specific requirements, HLS adds complexity without being the normal choice for a basic lofi stream.
Test before making it a 24/7 radio

Run a test that resembles the real broadcast: use the same scene, music source, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and network connection you plan to use. OBS recommends testing before a first live stream, and YouTube advises including audio and movement in a test.

Check the YouTube preview for video, listen for clean and correctly routed audio, and watch the Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. Let the test run long enough to reveal intermittent upload or playback problems rather than checking only that it connects.

After the test, verify the stream’s visibility, title, and other broadcast details in YouTube Studio before going public.

For a continuing broadcast, check the PC’s power settings, internet connection, OBS state, and music playback. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop options control aspects of starting and ending a broadcast; they do not establish recovery from a crashed PC, power loss, dropped home internet, or an OBS failure. Treat those as separate failure modes and test any operating-system startup or recovery configuration on your own system.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
