OpenAI employees reportedly challenged the company’s association with the political group Leading the Future in June 2026. Greg Brockman later said he would not make the additional $25 million contribution in his publicly announced $50 million commitment. Semafor reported that employee pushback contributed to his decision, alongside Brockman’s own concerns about the group’s targeting of New York Assemblymember Alex Bores; it was not reported as the sole cause.
What the reported Slack messages show
Semafor’s October 2, 2026 account is based on Slack messages shared with the outlet and a source familiar with Brockman’s decision. The outlet said employees’ posts were shared on the condition that they not be quoted directly. Its report offers a snapshot of internal discussion, not a complete archive or a measure of how OpenAI employees as a whole felt.
The discussion followed OpenAI’s effort to separate the company from Brockman’s personal support for Leading the Future (LTF). On June 1, chief strategy officer Jason Kwon reportedly previewed the company’s public statement in Slack, saying Brockman supported LTF in his personal capacity, not on OpenAI’s behalf.
One employee reportedly warned that aggressive political activity could damage OpenAI’s reputation and push researchers toward Anthropic, making it harder to compete for talent. Semafor said that post received 24 “agree” reactions and one eyes emoji. Those reactions indicate responses to that particular post; they do not establish broader employee sentiment.

On June 2, Kwon reportedly acknowledged that OpenAI was “taking reputational hits” and said he wished the company had drawn public lines earlier. The reported messages thus raised both reputational concerns and a workforce concern: whether political activity associated with the company could undermine its ability to retain researchers.
Why Brockman dropped the additional $25 million
On June 11, Brockman reportedly said he felt “terrible about the fact that LTF keeps reflecting on the company” and would not proceed with the second half of his publicly announced $50 million commitment. Semafor reported that his message received 40 hearts, five checkmarks and three thank-you emojis.

A source familiar with the situation told Semafor that employee pushback was part of Brockman’s decision. The same source described Brockman’s own qualms about LTF’s targeting of Bores, an AI-safety advocate. The reporting therefore supports saying that employee criticism contributed to the decision—not that it alone caused him to withhold the additional $25 million.
Semafor reported the commitment and the decision not to make its second $25 million portion. The available reporting does not independently establish the transaction details of any initial payment.

What OpenAI said about its relationship with LTF
In its June 1, 2026 public statement, OpenAI said Brockman and his wife, Anna, supported LTF personally and not on behalf of the company. OpenAI also said it had not directed LTF’s activities or had visibility into its operations. The company said it had not donated to super PACs, political candidates or campaigns, and that employees could participate in politics in their personal capacities. These are OpenAI’s stated positions, not independent findings about every relationship among OpenAI, LTF and affiliated organizations.
OpenAI’s statement also said: “Groups that are advocating on AI should be clear about their policy views, be honest about whom they represent, and not use tactics like astroturfing that obscure the real choices facing policymakers and the public.” That public position helps explain why clarity about political advocacy and organizational ties was central to the dispute.

Funding and influence claims remain disputed
A separate question is whether OpenAI or related parties funded or influenced LTF or an affiliated organization, Build American AI (BAAI). Transformer’s June 11, 2026 report described conflicting accounts:
- Transformer reported that BAAI executive Nathan Leamer texted that “OpenAI is just one” of four entities funding “this project,” and quoted him describing corporate funders as having a say.
- LTF spokesperson Jesse Hunt denied that OpenAI funded LTF or affiliated entities.
- An OpenAI spokesperson told Transformer that neither OpenAI nor Greg and Anna Brockman had donated to or been involved with BAAI.
These statements do not resolve the funding question. OpenAI’s claim that it did not direct LTF or have visibility into its operations is also distinct from the competing claims about funding or influence involving BAAI and related entities.

How to read the episode
The reporting points to a sequence: OpenAI publicly framed Brockman’s support as personal; employees reportedly raised reputational and talent-retention concerns; and Brockman later declined the additional $25 million portion of his commitment.
