If you miss finding apps quickly, seeing familiar taskbar controls, or navigating files the way you used to, Windows 11 gives you a few ways to make those everyday tasks feel more familiar. Its built-in settings can reorganize Start and the taskbar, but they do not recreate the Windows 7 interface. For a more substantial change, third-party utilities advertise classic-style menus and taskbars—with compatibility that you should verify for your specific Windows 11 release.
Make Start and the taskbar more familiar with Windows settings
Try the built-in controls first if your goal is a tidier Start menu or easier access to frequently used apps. These adjustments personalize Windows 11 without replacing its shell.
Organize Start around the apps you use
Pin frequently used apps to Start and arrange the pins to suit your routine. This makes familiar programs easier to reach, though the resulting menu remains Windows 11’s Start experience.
Align taskbar icons and pin frequent apps
Open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar. Under Taskbar behaviors, change the taskbar alignment; you can also pin apps you use often so they are readily available. Microsoft documents these controls in its Windows 11 taskbar personalization guide.

Choose which tray icons appear
Use the taskbar settings to choose which available icons are visible in the notification area. This can reduce clutter and make commonly used controls easier to spot; the exact options depend on the icons and features installed on your PC.
These settings are a good stopping point if you mainly want easier access and a less cluttered layout. They do not restore the Windows 7 Start menu or taskbar: Microsoft describes Start and the taskbar as significantly changed in Windows 11, and some earlier features were deprecated. Check Microsoft’s deprecated features documentation for details, since behavior can change with Windows updates.

When to consider a third-party classic-style utility
If you want the menu or taskbar itself to look and behave substantially differently, a third-party utility may offer more options than Windows’ personalization controls. The tools below describe different scopes; their advertised features should not be read as independent compatibility guarantees.

Check Windows version support before installing
Compatibility with every current Windows 11 build is not established by the feature descriptions above. Before installing a shell customization utility, check the vendor’s or project’s current release notes for your exact Windows version and build. A feature list alone does not prove that a particular release works reliably with your installation.

Start with native settings if small layout changes solve the problem. Choose a third-party utility only if you want broader interface changes, and base that choice on current version-specific support information rather than the general promise of a classic look.
